"AUTOMOBILE HEADLIGHT.
Application filed May 18,1926. Serial No. 109,918.
My present invention pertains to automobile headlights, and contemplates the provision of a headlight which while simple and 'inexpensive in construction and capable of" adequately lighting the road in front of an automobile, is so characterized as to avert glare in front of and at the Side of the line of the vertical center of. the headlight.-
7 To the attainment of the foregoing, the 10 invent on consists 1nthe improvementas hereinafter described and definitely claimed. In the accompanying drawings, forming, part of this specification Figure 1 is a longitudlnal' vertical central section ofthe headlight constituting the preferred embodiment of my invention. Figure 2 is afront end elevation of the headlight.
As illustrated in Figure 1, my novel head- 20, light is madeup of a casing 1, closed at its back and open atits front, an incandescent electric lamp 2 arranged in the upper rear portion of the casing and carried by a socket '3 attached to the back. wall of the casing, a
' reflector 4 disposed in the casing 1 and about the socket 3 and open at its forward end, alens 5, and a lens holder 6, the said holder 6 being joined preferably in detachable man- .ner to the ,casingl and being adaptedto normally hold the lens 5 in the relative position illustrated, that is to say with therear side of the lens 5 abutting against the forward end of the reflector 4 and the forward end of the casing and closing the open end ofthe reflector.
While I show the reflector 4 as formed in one piece, I would have it understood that it is within the purview of my invention to form the reflector 4 in-longitudinal sections, the longitudinal edges ofthe said sections being abutted and appropriately joined.
The reflector 4 is of the general eonfiguration illustrated, and is tapered toward its rear end and is arranged in the' casing 1 in a generally inclined position. The entire innor surface of the element 4 isreflective in character so as tocontribute to the illuminating quality of the headlight.
' As will be appreciated from Figure 1, the major fportion of theforward open end of there ector 4 is disposed in a horizontal plane below that in which the lamp 2 is 10- cated, and from'this it follows that the for wardupper portion of the reflector 4 will tend to cast the light raysfor-wardly and downwardly, and will prevent the projeclucent as desi will be noted t at the said frosted or colored 'ture from my invention.
tion of a large portionof the light rays directly forward in a horizontalplane from thelamp2.
As will be understood by comparison of to Figures 1 and. 2, the forward flange 7 of the lens holder 6 is' diminished in width from the upper vertical median portion of the flange to the loweriverticalmedian portion thereof. In other words, the upper portion 68 of the said flange 7'reaches downwardly to .a point in about the same horizontal plane as the upper portion of the forward end of the reflector 4. I'nthe horizontal plane of the'lamp 2 and 70 extending slightly below said plane is the 4 fully transparent portion 8 of the lens 5, the remainder of the said lens 5 being frosted or being colored and thereby rendered transated by .9 in Fi -are 2. It
and translucent portion 9 of the lens 5 is disposed below thefully transparent portion 8 and also atopposite sides of said portion 8, the shape of the portion '9 being preferably that of a crescent as illustrated in Figure2, and consequently the portion 9 being of a character to retard the passage of light rays will effectively prevent glare in the line of. the vertical center of the headlight and also 8 at opposite sides of said line, and this'notwithstanding the roadway in front of the headlights will be ade uately illuminated. It will be apparent rom the foregoing that my novel headlight while practically advantageous as stated, is simple and inexpensive in. construction and 1n general. is
well adapted towiths'tand the usage to which headlights are ordinarily subjected.
I have exfilicitly described the present and preferre ;embodiment of my invention, in order to im art a full, clear and exact understanding o the said embodiment. I do not'desire, however, to be understood as limitin myself to the structure shown ,and-descri ed, my invention being defined by my appended claim within the scope of which modifications may be made without depar- Having described my invention, .what 1 5 claim and desire to secure by Letters-Patent, is:-
In a headlight and in combination, a reflector closed at its'rear end and open at itsforward end and tapered toward said rear end and generally inclined downwardly and forwardly, a lamp the rear end portion of the reflector, and a lens opposed to and arranged about the forward open end of the reflector and having an upper fully transparent vertical central portion, the upper part of which is in the same horizontal plane area of the fully transparent portion and the said major portion of the lens corresponding to the area of the forward end of the reflector, with a lens holder mounted on the 15 forward portion of the casing and having a front flange, said flange tapered in width from the upper portion of its vertical median line to the lower portion of said vertical median line and having the lower edge 20 of its upper portion flush with the forward end of the upper portion of the reflector.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature.
