REEL SEAT FOB FISHING RODS.
application mea ny 1s, 192s. serial no. 30,902. v
In the construction of fish rods it is customary to provide a reel seat on the barrel of the rod near the handle, which seat customarily comprises a fixed socket adapted to receive one end of the reel base plate, and amovable ring socket adapted to engage the other end of the reel base plate; and various means have been devised for imparting 'longitudinal movement to the movable ring socket in. order to tightly and firmly engage the reel base. ln most of these prior constructions, however, no satisfactory means have been provided for smoothly and evenly imparting the necessary longitudinal movement referred to,
especially where provision is made for seating and clamping reel base plates of varying thickness. ln most cases 1t has beencustomary to afford a relatively loose sliding fit to the clamping ring to accommodate such'variations, but this 1s objectionable in that the ring when moved to clamping position has usually been morel or less tilted or canted, so that a lirm, even contact is not provided. Such clamping rings, moreover, have usually relied solely on friction to pie.- vent longitudinal movement of thebase plate without affording positive abutments against the positive ends of the base plate.
, with reference to the accompanying drawings wherein:
Ftigure 1 shows a side elevation of the han e portion of a rod with a reel clamped in lace; and Y l! ig. 2 is an enlarged view of the movable socket ring andadjustable follower ring in section, the rod barrel being shown in elevation.
The invention is shown applied to a rod having a smooth cylindrical barrel A provided with aiforward handle grip B and a rear handle grip C of the usual variety. The barrel is provided at its rear end with a fixed hooded socket D adapted to receive the rear end of a reel base plate E connected with a reel F of the usual character.-
The ixed socket D co-operates with a clamping ring G provided with a hooded socket portion H adapted to engage with the forward end of the reel base plate ll. Eachof the hooded sockets is configured to afford a square oli'set at its inner end so that when the reel .base plate is seated, and the clamping ring moved to its final posl-` tion, the ends of the base plate will rest in butt contact with the inner ends of the respective sockets, so that no fore and aft play of the reel will be permitted.
'l'he slidable clamping ring is adapted to be moved into clamping relation with the reel base plate by means of an adjustable follower ring l which consists of an outwardly enlarged knurled portion J and a reduced portion K, which latter abuts squarely against the forward edge of the clamping ring Ur and 1s adapted to impart aneven and uniform fore and aft motion to the latter. he follower ring is provided on its inner surface with threads la, which terminate at a point inside of the rear edge of 'the follower ring to aiford a smooth orv unbroken riding surface M which closely encircles the barrel of the rod and rides smoothly thereon.
The threaded portion of the adjusting ring engages with outstanding threads N on the barrel near the forward end thereof, the follower ring being of suliicient length to afford suflicient retraction to permit the base plate of the reel Lto be seated free of the movable socket H, after which a turning of the adjustable follower ring will cause the same to move rearwardly carrying with it the clamping ring which will slide smoothly and closely upon the barrel until moved to a position to tightly engage and hold the reel 1n place.
The arrangement is one which permits of the use of a movable clamping ring of a size to closely embrace the barrel Without the possibility of play or tilting movement thereon, and the arrangement of the Iollower ring isv such as to afford a smooth sliding movement upon the barrel. The arrangement is .distinctly superior to one in which the threads are interrupted to afford a socket for the reel base plate, or to any construction in which an effort is made t0 combine the functions of a clamping ring with those of the rotatable follower ring. By providing a slidable unthreaded clam ing ring which need not be rotated, t e
l the reel base plate.
The arrangement is one which positively insures against any displacement of the reel when in use,and at the same time, by moving the clamping ring to a greater or less degree, the device will adapt itself to reel base plates of varying length, since in every f-asethe reel will be firmly engaged when the clamping ring has been moved sulficiently to force both ends of the base plate into -butt contact with the extreme inner walls of the respective sockets, this adjustment being facilitated by the slightly tapered formation at each end of the reel base plate. This positive butt contact against both ends of the reel base plate affords an unyielding engagement with the reel, which is much superior to that afforded by clamping rings or the like which engage the reel base plate by frict1on only without positively restraining the reel.
against longitudinal movement.
We claim:
1. In a reel seat, in combination with a barrel, a socket ixedly mounted on the barrel, a clamping ring, closely fitting the barrel and slidably mounted thereongand provided with an outwardly protruded portion furnishing a movable socket, a set of threads on the barrel, and a follower ring adapted to abut against the clamping ring and provided with an inner bore adapted in part to engage with the threads on the barrel, and in part to ridefreely upon the unthreaded portion .of the barrel, substantially as described.
