This invention consists in improvements in or relating to smokers" companions, ashtrays, match-and-cigarette-containers and like smokers requisites. Hereinafter, and in 'the appended claims, all these articles will be referred to, for the sake. of, brevity, by the term smokers companion and it is to be .understood wherever thisterm appears that it'is intended to refer to any of the ar-' IO ticleS enumerated,- or like articles.
The present invention Comprises, in one form, the combination of a hollow ornamental figure, a portion of whichiis trans;
lucent, an electric lamp serving to illuminate the interior of the hollow figure, an energizin circuit for the lamps and a witch-device or said energiz ngfl'clrcuit,'sa1dsW1tch device comprising a movable match-strikingv surface so that when a match istruck on, it the circuitof the lam will be closed and the lamp will be illuminated.
In order that the invention maybe more .1 I v lures 2 and 3 from which it w ll be seen that 'clearly understood, one preferred construction embodying the features of the invention, will now be described witho-the aid oft-he accompanying. drawings, in which Fi re 1 "is a. perspective view of a smoi drs companion); v Figure 2 is a plan of'the underside of the hollow base of the companion withthe cover removed, and a Figure 3 is a section on the line 3-3 of Figure 2.
ike reference numerals indicate like parts in all the figures of-the drawings.
10 serves to contain withinit a battery 11 (Figures -2and 3) of the dry cell type,
which is held in position by means of clips 12 constituting terminaLconnectors throu h which the battery is connected in electric circuit to be detailed hereinafter. The basemember 10 sup art! on its uppersur face an ash-tray 13 and a receptacle 14 for containing loose matches; In addition to these .a'r--; 'ticles, and normally flush with the upper sur-:
face of the base-member 10, there is a springpressed switch-button 15, the outer surface] of which is provided with a match-striking composition preferably of a character suitable to the so-called safety matches as well as to those of the'non-safety type.
.Supported alsoon the base-member 10 an ornamental Figure 16 which, in the illustrated example, is shaped to represent an'owl.
'ina socket in the top wall of the base andan incandescentelectriclamp 18 is 'supported in my preferredmanner within the. body of the owl, preferably at the level 0t the eyes .17. x In the particular example shown, the 68. current-carrying conductors 19,'whic h pass throu h the hol ow interiorof-the Figure 16 and t rou h the socket in which-theowl isseated in t e base 10, serve not only to convey the energizing current to the lamp 18 also to pp rt the latter at th quired height. v
- In the interior of the baselO fis disposed.
the wiring which connects the switch-contacts (operated 'bythe'button and the 715' battery with the conductors 19. The. ,eir-
' cuit for the wiring is clearly shown in Fig.-
nected to one of the conductors 19 and ,nor- .mally tending to retain the switch in its 0 n 84;v position. The other conductor 19 is e ectrically connected with the other pole of the battery. The connections of the poles of the batter respectively with the contact stud I '20 an .one of the conductors 19 is efiected by It will be seen that a.,,hollow base member,
I though the owls eyes have blinked.
The parts contained within-the'base 10 can be enclosed by means of a cover-plate 22 whch I screws as shown orby any other preferred form of fastening, A i l It is obvious that details of-the invention may be "modified while still retaining the objects and benefits of the invention, r 106 It is further obvious that the invention" may be a plied in many other ways. "For example, t e figure may be in the form of a cat or other animal and the switch-device"=.'-;-.. may comprise a. part of the" body of the) may be secured, for example; by I animal which, when stroked by a match held in the hand, will cause the energizing circuit to be closed and the lamp to be illuminatedi I claim 2-- 1. In a smokers companion, the combination of a hollow ornamental figure, a portion of which is translucent, an electric lamp servin to illuminate the interior of the hollow figure, an energizing circuit for the lamp, and a switch device for said ener gizing circuit, said switch device comprising a movable match striking surface.
2. In a smokers companion the combination of a hollow ornamental figure, a portion of which is translucent, an electric lamp serving to illuminate the interior of the hollow figure, an energizing circuit for the lamp, and a resiliently controlled button switch for said energizlng circuit, one surface of said buttoncomprising a match striking surface.
3.'A smokers companion comprising in combination, a hollow ornamental figure, a portion of which is translucent, an electric lamp situated within the interior of the hollow figure, an energizing circuit for the lamp, and a switch device for the energizing circuit, said switch comprising a match striking surface which is movable to close the switch when a match is struck thereon.
fir. In a:smokers companion the combination of a hollow base member, a hollow ornamental figure mounted on said base member and having a translucent portion, an electric lamp situated within the hollow figure, an energizing circuit for the lamp, a switch-device having a surface available from the outside of said base member and comprising a match-striking surface, and an electric battery which is retained within the base member and constitutes the energizing means for the circuit.
5. In a smokers companion, the combination of a hollow ornamental figure having translucent eyes, an electric lamp situated within said hollow figure, an energizing cir-' cuit for the lamp, and-a switch-device com prising a movable striking surface.
6. In a smokers companion, the combination of a hollow base member, a hollow figure mounted on the base member which hollow figure is shaped to represent an owl having translucent eyes, an electric lamp situatedwithin the body of' said owl, an energizing circuit for the lamp, a resiliently controlled button switch for the energizing circuit, said switch having a surface available for use from the outside of the base member and comprising a match-striking surface, and an electric battery retained within said base member and constituting the energizing means for the said circuit.
In testimony whereof I aflix my si nature. BERNARD CHARLES HO ELL.
