Athe parts are automatically locked fte prevent closing Vof the `ports "I7 leihen-the b21-iler is As :an instanceof this arrangement a latch "18 projects from rod 8 and is adapted for retraction as it passes the flanged collar 6; and When the rod 8 is fully telescoped so as to open ports 17, the latch is above the flanged collar and is again projected so as to seat on the flange ol the collar for preventing relative movement between the impact rod and the bailcr pipe.
The latch 18 is preferably yieldably pro` jected by a spring 21 mounted in the transverse bore 19 in which the latch slides, the spring being held in place by a screw plug 22 and engaging a guide head 20 at the inner end of the latch.
Projection ot the latch is preferably limited-by abutment ot itshead Q0 against a shoulder formed by the bore 19, in order to prevent displacement oi the latch `from the rod 8.
After the bailer has been withdrawn trom the well with the ports 1'4" maintained in open position by the locking engagement ot latch 18, the latch may be retracted to permit return of the parts to normal position with ports 17 closed, by inserting a suitable tool in an aperture 23 which extends through collar 6 in alinement with latch 18.
The improved construction thus provides a normally closed bailer which will not open for discharge of cement until the impact member' is telescoped to its limit ot movement; and as a consequent there is no possibility of accidental discharge of cement through slight telescoping of .the impact member as a result of striking an obstruction in the well.
The invention also provides for positively locking the bailer in its open position to insure discharge of all of the cement as the bailer is subsequently withdrawn from a well.
We claim:
l. A dump bailer comprising a pipe having a transverse partition and a discharge port in the pipe above the partition, an exterior and an interior abutment surface at the lower end of the pipe, a Vsleeve slidable on the pipe and normally resting on the exterior abutment surface, said sleeve having a port in non-alinement with the discharge port and below the partition for closing the discharge port when the sleeve is in normal position, an impact member slidable in and projecting beyond the lower end ot the pipe below the partition and normally extended relative to the pipe, a shoulder on said member engaging the interiorV abutment surface for limiting normal projection oi the impact member, the lower` end ot the pipe being slotted, and pins slidable in'said slots connecting the impact member and the sleeve tor raising the sleeve on the pipe by telescoping of the impact member in the lower end of the pipe to aline the sleeve port with the discharge port so as to open the discharge port.
2. A dump bailer comprising a pipe having a transverse partition and a discharge port in the pipe above the partition, a sleeve slidable on the pipe and having a port in non-alinement with the discharge portv and below the partition for closing the discharge port when the sleeve is in normal position, an impact member slidable in and normally extended beyond the lower end of the pipe below the partition, the lower end of the pipe being slotted, and a connection between the impact member and the sleeve slidable in the slot for raising the sleeve on the pipe by telescoping of the impact member in the lower end of the pipe to aline the sleeve port with the discharge port so as to open the discharge port.
3. A dump bailer comprising a pipe having a transverse partition and a discharge port in the pipe above the partition, a sleeve slidable on the pipe and having a port in non-alinement with the discharge port when 'he sleeve is in normal posit-ion, an impact member slidable in and normally extended beyond the lower end of the pipe below the partition, the lower end of the pipe being slotted, a connection between the impact member and the sleeve slidable in the slot lor raising the sleeve onthe pipe by telescoping of the impact member in the lower end ot the pipe to aline the sleeve port with the discharge port, and cooperating means on the impact member and the lower end of the pipe below the partition for automatically locking the impact member in telescoped position.

A dump bailer comprising a pipe having a transverse partition' and a discharge port in the pipe above the partition, a sleeve slidable on the pipe and having a port in non-alinement with the discharge portwhen the sleeve is in normal position, an impact member slidable in and normally extended beyond the lower end of the pipe below the partit-ion, the lower end of the pipe being slotted, a connection between the impact member and the sleeve slidable in the slot for raising the sleeve on the pipe by telescoping the impact member in the lower end ot the pipe to aline the sleeve port with the discharge port, an interior flange on the lower` end of the pipe, and a yieldable projccting latch on the impact member adapted to automatically engage the flange lor locking the impact member in telescoping position.
