Description

v 1,621,778 March 22 1927- A. HAGLUND CALIPER 1 Filed out. 27. 1924 INVEN TOR. flxa l/mww.
Patented Mar. 22, 1927.,
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
AXEL HAGLUND, OF OAKLAND, CALIFGRNIA, ASSIGNOE O1? ONE-HALF TO OSCAR B. LINDER, OF OAKLAND, CALIFORNIA.
GALIPER.
Application filed October 27, 1924:.
My invention is an improved caliper or divider.
The object of my invention is to provide a calibrated dial operated by the arms of the calipers, the rotation of said dial being increased through suitable gearing so that the angular displacement thereof is sufiiciently great to permit the calibrations thereon to be easily read. For example, a
movement of a quarter of an inch at the tips shown on the dial.
In the annexed drawing in which my invention is illustrated,
Figure 1 is a front elevation of my caliper.
Figure 2 is a side elevation of the same.
Figure 3 is a fragmentary front elevation of the calipers with the cover plate removed.
Figure 4- is a fragmentary front elevation of my caliper with the front plate and dial removed.
Referring more particularly to the drawing, my calipers include an arm 1 and an arm 2 pivoted thereto as shown at 3.
A circular head 4 is formed on the arm 1 and a pin 5 is secured therein and extends therefrom. A dial 6 is journaled on the pin 5 and has a gear 7 secured to the rear thereof. A gear segment 8 is formed on the upper Serial No. 745,109.
edge of the arm 2 and meshes with the gear V I. the arm 2 will cause a rotation of the gear 7 and dial 6.
The gear ratio between 7 and segment 8 can be as large or as small as desired within the limits of the space between the pivot 40 3 and pin 5.
A cover plate 9 is secured to the outer end of the pin 5 and has a slot 10 formed therein through which the dial 6 is visible. This dial is suitably calibrated to suit the conditions of the work;
Having described my invention, I claim: A caliper comprising an arm having a circular head, a pin concentrically disposed with respect to and rigidly mounted in said head, a gear rotatively mounted on said pin, a second arm pivotally secured to said head, and having a segmental gear adapted to mesh with said first named gear, a dial secured to said first named gear and adapted to rotate therewith, said dial having a diameter equal to the diameter of said head, and a circular cover plate of the same diam eter as said dial and head, and being disposed over said dial, and rigidly mounted on said pin, said plate being provided with an aperture through whloh said dial is visible.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature.
AXEL HAGLUND.
