GAME BOARD.
Original application filed January 24,
January 24, 1924, by Martin A. Kuehn and Benjamin F. Bai'n, and patented February 17, 1925, No. 1,526,602. In that application there was generally described a board constructed of sheet metal with the marginal edges rolled to produce a reinforcingan'd retaining margin on opposite sides thereof. In the present application I propose to fully describe the complete construction of the board and the method of making the same.
One of the objects of the invention is to provide a game board having opposite playing' surfaces and broadly to provide reinforcing and retaining margins on'opposite sides of the board or in'other words projecting laterally from each playing surface which serve to stiflen the construction and also to provide retaining flanges which prevent the checkers or playing men from accidentally slipping off the board. 7
Specifically stated the invention consists in providing a playing board of sheet metal having its marginal edges rolled in such manner that retaining flanges are produced which project laterally from each playing surface on opposite sides of the board.
Further objects of the invention will appear as the following specific description is read in connection with the accompanying drawing, which forms a part of this application, and in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the board with one marginal edge broken away to show the board in section.
Figure 2, 3 and 4 are sectional views showing the various steps in the formation of the board. b
Fig. 5 is a sectional view showing a type of board in which the flange extends to one side only.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, 1 indicates the board which is constructed of sheet metal ofsuitable gage, and 2 and 3 represent the opposite playing surfaces of the board.
In the present embodiment which is only for purpose of illustration the board is substantially rectangular in outline with rounded corners 4, but I wish it understood that the area of the board may be of any suitable shape Without in any way departing from the spirit or scope of this invention.
1924, Serial No. 688,252. Divided and this applicationfiled- December Serial No 756,020.
As shown in Fig. 4 theboard is formedat- 1ts per phery with what shall be hereinafter termed retaining flanges 5 and (ithe former pro ecting laterally from the playing surface 2 and the latter projecting laterally from the playing surface 3. In other words, i
no matter Wl'llCh'SlClQ of the board is being used in playing a particular game, there is always presented a retaining flange which prevents accidental slip-ping of the playing men ofl of. the board.
In constructing the board with its retaining flanges 5 and 6, which also act in the capacity of a reinforcing member, generally stiflening the entire construction I first bend the marginal edges of the board in any suitable form of press into the position shown in Fig. 2 wherein there is an upstanding margin strip 7 perpendicular to the board, the upper edge .of this strip is then turned inwardly as shown in Fig. 3 at 8. This latter operation may be produced by die stamping or in any other well known manner after which the entire strip 7 is curled over into mar inal rib is disposed solely beyond one surfzce of the board.
In constructing a board in either manner I not only stiffen the board and provide the retaining flanges before described, but also nicely round the edges of the board so that it readily slides over tables and other support- 7 ing surfaces without scratching. The board. may be used with either surface uppermost for playing different games, for instance, one surface may have indicia thereon which will permit playing of checkers, chess and like games, while the other surface may be supplied with indicia for playing other games such as the game described and claimed in the application Serial No. 688,252, filed January 24, 1924 of which this case is a division;
' i What I claim is:
game board constructed of a single sheet of material having playing surfaces on opposite sides and having its marginal edges formed to produce opposite laterally 'eX- tending retaining flanges raised abovefthe playing surfaces of the board.
2). As a new article of manufacture, a game board constructed of a single sheet of material having integrally formed at its marinal edges oppositely disposed retaining flanges projecting substantially perpendicular from opposite surfaces of the board.
As anew article of manufacture, a
game board constructed of a sheet of material having a marginal rib substantially circular in cross section which is medially divided by the plane of the board.
5. As a new article of manufacture, a
game board constructed of a single flat sheetof metal having at its marginal edges a continuous integral rib raised above the plane of the board on bothsides thereof, and having a smooth outer surface permitting the board to be slid over a table or other support without scratching.
6. As a new article of manufacture, a game board constructed of a single sheet of metal having an integral portion adjacent the periphery rolled to produce a marginal rib which is substantially circular in cross section and is divided medially by the plane t of the" board.
In testimony whereof I afliX my signature.
