IMPROVEMENT IN PRINTERS TYPE-CASES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 162,084, dated April 13, 1875; application filed December 26, 1874.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, LUOIEN A. MARTIN, of San Francisco, in the cpunty of San Francisco and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Printers Type-Cases; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification, in which Figure l is a perspective view of a section of a printer's case embodying my improtement; and Fig. 2 is a vertical transverse section thereof, exhibiting a side elevation and a sectional view of my improvement.
Corresponding parts in the two figures are designated by like letters.
This invention relates to a certain improvement in printers cases; and it consists in providing the false bottoms of their boxes with mandrels traversed by a spiral thread or groove, by which their encircling springs may be vertically adjusted thereon, substantially as hereinafter more fully set forth.
To enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will proceed to describe it.
In the annexed drawing, A refers to the upper left-hand section of a printers case, with its boxes provided with false bottoms B B, secured upon mandrels C C, passing down through and guided in holes in the bottom D of the case. These mandrels are traversed by a spiral thread or groove, c c, or provided with other suitable means by which their encircling springs may be vertically adjusted thereon to permit of the said springs being moved away from the false bottoms, in order to take up the slack or sag of the springs to restore their original tension, by which the type in the boxes may be kept flush with their upper edges. As some printers have a strong, heavy motion, and to prevent their knocking the type from their respective boxes in removing the same therefrom, the size of the springs may be varied, so as to sink the bottoms of said' boxes, and the type below the upper surfaces of the latter, to obviate this disadvam tage. E E are the springs encircling the mandrels C C, whose upper ends are compactly coiled into short tubes 0 e, to fit and receive the said mandrels, to enable them to engage with the spiral threads or screws of the lat ter. The lower ends of the said springs rest on the bottom D of the case.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The mandrel C, with the spiral thread or groove 0 c and spring E e, in combination with the movable or false bottom B of the typebox of a printers case, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
, In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I hereunto affix my signature in pres-' ence of two witnesses.
LUOIEN A. MARTIN.
