Description
PAENT OFFICEa SAMUEL D. BURBANK, OF SPRINGFIELD, MASSACHUSETTS.
IMPROVEMENT IN EYEGLASSES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 162,025, dated April 13, 1875; application filed September 8,1874.
To all whom it may conce/rn Be it known that I, SAMUEL D. BURBANK, of Springfield, in the county of Hampden and State ot Massachusetts, haveinvented an Improvement in Eyeglasses, ot which the fol lowing is a speciiieation:
In the accompanying drawings, Fig. l is a front View of an eyeglass with my improved nose-piece attached. Fig. 2 is a side View ot the nose-piece detached. Fig. Sis a face View ot" the same.
My invention consists of a tilting nose-piece, upon the face of which is a general protuberance or bearing toward each end, and a general depression between such protuberant bear14 ings, as will be more fully explained hereafter.
ln the manufacture of my improved eyeglasses,'the frame A and spring B may be of the usual construction, as seen in Fig. l. The nose-piece C may be pivoted so as to have a vibrating motion, as shown in dotted lilies. The general form of this nose-piece C is like an oX-yoke. It has two protuberant bearings, a and a', on opposite sides of the pivot D, and in putting the eyeglass upon the nose the piece C will tilt, so that boththese bearings will touch the nose, and thus always give a broad bearing-surface, which holds the eyeglass in place,.whatever may be the form of the nose. This yoke-shaped nose-piece may be riveted or otherwise fastened upon the frame, or the spring, or secured in place by any suitable means; but I prefer to use a pivot, which affords easy Vibration ot' the nose piece.
I regard the above-described nose-piece as very pleasing in form yet l do not confine my invention to the preoise form described, so long as the two opposing bearings a and a are used with the coneavity between them, in order to secure a broad bearing, or two somewhat separate and distant bearings, as above mentioned.
Having described my invention, I claim- 1. The above-described separate bearings a and a', with the depression between them, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
2. The above-described yoke-formed nose piece G, substantially asset forth.
SAMUEL D. BURBANK.
