The principal objects of my invention are to provide an improved pressing machine;

From the foregoing it will be observed that the shaft 5 which carries the presser head, i hung from the frameof the machine by the links 11 and 19 and the T-end of the lever 16 in substantially the same manner as shown in the structure of the patent to Schrom No. 1,004,697. In the structure of said patent, however, the lower end of the upright shaft which carries the presser head is stayed by a pair of links which are ivoted to the frame of the machine and to the socket at the lower end of said shaft, and the latter has practically only an up and down movement.
In my construction, however, the socket 21 at the lower end of the shaft 5-, is connected to the lower part of the side frames 2 by toggle links 33 and 34, which are pivoted together at their inner ends on the pivot 35, and the outer ends of the links 33 are pivoted on the shaft 24 of the socket 21, while the outer end of the toggle link 34 is pivoted on the shaft 36, which has the opposite ends engaged in corresponding bearings 37 of the two side frames 2 as indicated particularly in Fig. 3.
A pair of links respectively at opposite sides of the lever 16 and toggle link 34, are pivoted at their up er ends tothe lever 16 by the pin 39 and have their lower ends pivotally engaged on the shaft 35 so that when the lever 16 is in the elevated position shown in Fig. 4,

Thus the distance between the stationary shaft 36 and the shaft 24 is shortened when the lever 16 is elevated, andthe lower end of-the upright shaft 5 is accordingly moved forwardly to tilt and raises the shaft 5 rearwardly at a slight angle to the vertical as shown in Fig. 4, with the result that the carriage for the presser head is tilted slightly. The shafts 24 and 36 are preferably extended sufficiently to accommodate a pair of springs 59 which connect the corresponding ends of these shafts and serve to facilitate the elevation and rearward movement of the pressing mechanism and breaking of the toggle joint connection of the links 33 and 34 and bend this articulated joint upwardlyas seen in 4 by drawing 24 toward 36, and thus 21 and -5 forwardly. The opposite action takes place when the tread'le 17 is depressed.
The carriage which has been hereinbefore referred to, is indicated at 40 and consists of an elongated head with an opening extending therethrough from end to end to loosely receive the bar 41 which is engaged between the upper and lower'anti-friction rollers 42, which are journaled in the head and permit easy sliding movement of the bar 41 through the head. This head is formed with a pair of vertically spaced collar portions 43 and 44 which embrace the upper end of the shaft 5 and have a collar or sleeve 45 interposed therebetwcen and secured on the shaft 1" by the pin 46 or in any other convenient manner.
In cases where this machine is provided with an ordinary iron which it is desired to move along the upper surface of the pressing buck, the collars 43 and 44 are free to turn on the shaft 5. In the present structure, however,-a pressing element 47 is employed, which merely clamps down against the top of the buck 48 and as sidewise lateral movement or oscillation is not desired, the

Extending lengthwise within the heating element 4.7 is a gas burner 53, which has an inlet pipe 54 connected thereto at the center, and this inlet pipe is connected through the manually operable valve 55 by the hose 56 to a gas supply pipe 57, the hose belng sufliciently loose and suitably caught up as indicated at 58 so that the pressing element may be readily raised and lowered and moved backwardly and forwardly on the pressing machine.
A similar gas burner 62 is mounted under the top plate of the pressing table 48 and has the inlet pipe 63 at the center connected through the manually operable valve 64 and tubing 65 to the main supply pipe 57. A valve 66 which is automatically operable by a thermostat, is connected to the supply pipe 57 so as to simultaneously control the admission of gas to both of the heating elements 53 and 62, the device of this auto matic valve not being shown, as such valves are already on the market, and any suitable thermostatically operated valve may be employed. A thermostatic element (37 is mounted by means of brackets 68 under the top plate of the pressing table 48 and connected by means of the tubing 69 with the automatic valve 66 in the usual manner for controlling the operation thereof. .A. handle 70 on this valve serves to set the latter at any desired temperature which is automatically maintained by the valve through the medium of the thermostatic element 67.
With this construction, when the handle 70 is set at the temperature desired for pressing, the flow of gas through the tubes 56 and 65 to the burners 53 and 62 is automatically regulated so as to maintain the required temperature. A manually operable valve 71 is provided in the supply pipe 57 for entirely shutting off the supply of gas.
For limiting the movement of the lever 16, the cross brace 4 of the main frame is provided with a suitable inset bumper 72, and the base of the machine with a similar inset bumper 73, which project sufficiently and are composed of suitable material to cushion the impact of the lever at the extremities of its movement. The cross brace 4 is also formed with a transverse rib 75 with which a latch 76 on the treadle cooperates for holding the treadle in the dc pressed position. This latch76 is pivoted at 77 and has a laterally offset extension 87 which projects below the treadle and is connected to a spring 78 which serves to throw the latch 76 into engagement with the rib 75. An operating lever 79 is pivoted at 80 near the lower extremity of the extension 87 and has an upwardly extending arm 81 connected by the spring 82 with the upper end of the extension 87, and this operating member 79 extends forwardly and has a stem 83 projecting up through the treadle 17 and provided with a button or small plate 84 at the upper end, which may be depressed to release the latch 76 from the rib 75.
, An extension 85 is hinged at each side of the top of the pressing machine and held in the elevated position by a brace 86 extend ing down to the base of the machine.
While-I have shownand described my invention in a preferred form, I am aware that various changes and modifications may be made without departing from the principles of my invention, the scope of which is to be determined by the appended claims.
I claim as my invention:
1. In a pressing machine, the combination of a main frame having a pressing tablr thereon, an upright shaft mounted to swing on the frame and having a pressing element thereon to one side of the shaft for pressing articles on the pressing table. a treadle and mechanism operated thereby for raising and lowering the shaft, and means operated by the treadle to swing the shaft and thereby increase the extent of the raising and lowering movement of the presser element which is eflected by theraising and lowering of the shaft.
2. In a pressing machine, the combination of a frame having a pressing table, an upright shaft having a pressing element thereon supported in a forwardly extending position, and means for raising and lowering the shaft and simultaneously oscillating the shaft about a horizontal axis.
3. In a pressing machine. the combination of a frame having a pressing table. an upright shaft horizontally pivoted on the frame at a distance above the lower end and carrying a pressing element to one side at the upper end, a treadle and mechanism operated thereby for raising and lowering the shaft, and means operated by the treadle to swing the lower end of the shaft laterally and thereby rock the shaft on its horizontal pivot.
4. In a pressing machine, the combination of a frame having a pressing table, a pressing element pivotally mounted on the frame, means for supporting said pressing element, a toggle link means for raising the pressing element, a toggle link side shifter for the supporting means, and means for simulta neously operating both toggles.
5. In a pressing machine, the combination of a frame having a pressing table, a pressing element, an upright shaft for supporting the pressing element. said shaft being pivotally supported on the frame, a toggle support for the shaft and a toggle brace for shifting the shaft laterally, and means for simultaneously straightening out both toggles to elevate the shaft and shift the same laterally.

In a pressing machine, the combination of a main frame having a pressing table thereon, an upright shaft having a laterally shifting support at the upper end, a pressing element carried by the laterally shiftable support, atoggle connection between the lower end of the shaft and frame, a lifting spring operable to elevate the shaft, and another spring exerting a side tension on the shaft and associated with the toggle connection to return the same to its normal position and shift the shaft laterally.
7. In a pressing machine, the combination of a frame havin a stationary pressing table thereon, a, sliaft movable vertically, and also laterally at its upper end, a pressing element supported by said shaft at one side of its upper end and means for simultaneously raising or lowering and laterally shifting said shaft in opposite. directions from a definite fixed position at one time to another definite fixed position and vice versa.
8. In a pressing machine, the combination of a frame having a stationary pressing table thereon. av shaft movable vertically and also laterally forwardly and backwardly at its upper end, a pressing element slid-ably mounted on said shaft at its upper end and means for simultaneously lowering and laterally shifting said shaft forwardly to one position or raising and laterally shifting said shaft backwardly to another position.

In apressing machine, the combination of a main frame having a pressing table thereon, an upright shaft pivoted near its lower end and having a pressing element slidably mounted thereon. means for raising and lowering the shaft and means simultaneously operated thereby to cause the pressing element on the shaft to swing in an are as it is raised and lowered.

treadlc. having operative connection with the standard for raising and lowering the same, and means operatively connected to the treadle, frame. and standard, to swing the shaft forwardly and baclnvardly as it is lowered and raised, as and for the pur poses set forth.
11, In a pressing machine the combination of a frame having a pressing table, an upright shaft mounted to be raised and lowered and fulerumed on a horizontal axis near its lower end and having a pressing element at. one side to co-opcrate with the pressing table, and means for raising the shaft and Swinging t rearwardly upon its axis or for lowering and swinging the shaft forwardly on its axis.
12. In a pressing machine the combine tion of a frame having a pressing table, an
upright shaft mounted to be raised and lowered and fulcrumed on a horizontal axis near its lower end and having a pressing element at one side to co-operate with the pressing table, and means for lowering the shaft and simultaneously swinging it forwardly, said means when released permitting said shaft to be raised and swung rearwardly.
13. In a pressing machine, the combination of a frame having a pressing table. a pressing element, an upright standard for supporting the pressing element, said standard being fulcrumed at its lower end and adapted for limitedforward and rearward movement at said end, and means for oscillating the standard and pressing element carried thereby forwardly and rearwardly.

In a pressing machine, the combination of a frame having a pressing table, a pressing element, means for supporting the pressing element, means for raising and lowering the supporting means and pressing element carried thereby, and means associated with the last-named means forescillating the supporting means and pressing element forwardly and rearwardly during the raising and lowering action to move the upper portion of the supporting means toward and away from the frame and to raise or lower and move the pressing ele ment toward and away from the pressing table.

In a pressing machine, the combination of a main frame having a pressing table thereon, an upright shaft pivotally mounted on said frame and having a slidably shifting support at its upper end, a pressing element carried by the support, said shaft being adapted to more forwardly and backwardly on an axis near its lower end and toward and away from the frame at its upper end to correspondingly shift the pressing element. carried thereby, a treadle. means between the treadle and frame and operatively connected with said treadle to actuate the shaft, and means exerting a forward tension on the lower end of the shaft to move it rearwardly at its up er end and to normally hold the lower end orwardly when the treadle is released.
