CHARLES T. RASCHIGK, OF ST. PAUL, MINNESOTA.
INDEX.
Application filed April 13, 1921. Serial No. 461,014.
My invention relates to indexes for books and the like and particularly ,for coupon books and has for its object .to provide a construction whereby a number of diiierent leaves within the book may' be independently exposed for accessibility in opening the book to the desired pages, said construction being formed by a single simplev operation upon the edges ofthe leaves, which same .operation is performed upon all of the leavesthereby greatly reducing the cost of constructing the same.
In carrying out my objects I provide a single die for cutting away. a portion of the edge of each leaf of the book, said diebeing of a width sufficient to expose a number ofV the index portion of the various leaves .at one time. In utilizing this system the cuts are shifted along thevario-us leaves in amounts suiiicient to expose certain portions thereoil on which are marked the indicia required.
The full objects and advantages ot' my invention will appear in connection with the detailed description thereof and are particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings, illustrating the application of my invention in one form p Fig. v1 is a plan view of a coupon book showing my invention applied thereto.
Fig. 2 is an enlarged end view or" the book shown. in Fig. 1.
Figs. 3 to 9 inclusive, are plan views of end portions of various leaves in the book shown in Figure 1.
10 is a view similar to Fig. 2 showing a slight variation in the form of application of my invention.
In the drawings I have shown an ordinary type of coupon book having a cover 10 and a number of leaves 11 all 4bound together at one end by wire stitches 12 which, it' desired, may be covered by an edging strip 13 oi cloth or some other suitable material. The leaves 11 comprise sets of coupons of various denominations which are indicated in the various Figures 3 to 9 inclusive, at 14:, 15, 1G, 17, 18, 19 and 20. These leaves may be divided into detachable coupons, portions ot which are shown in the above figures, which maybe provided with numerals designating their values which I have shown ranging from one cent to` one dollar. Ii' desired each set ot coupons of each denomination may be made of dierent colored material and if desired other printed matter may be inserted upon the coupon as becomes necessary to the proper uses of the same.
As clearly shown in Figures 3 to 9y inclusive, the'lower edge 21 of each of the coupons is cut to provide an elongated notch 22 which has an edge 23 running parallel to the lower edge 24 of the leaves 11 and which has two side edges 25' and 26 issuing from the edge 21 and meeting the edge 23 of said notch in a rounded corner. `From an inspection of the various iigures it will be noted that a similar notch 22 is formed on cach Aof the leaves 14 to 19 inclusive, said notchesbeing of the same shape and dimensions but being positioned on the edge of the coupon so that portions of succeeding coupons are exposed to view' as indicated at 25, 26, 27, 28, 29 and 30 in Figure 1. In constructing the coupons a single die is employed which cuts the same out as indicated at 22 in all of the leaves. By positioning the die relative to the edge o the coupons which it is to out or vice versa, the various notches are shifted along the edge of the coupon so as to expose the edges 25, 26, 27, 28, 29 and 30 thereby presenting a portion of each succeeding coupon whereby the same may be engaged by the finger to cause the book to be opened at any required page.
It can be readily understood that lby punchinga number of coupons with a notch 22 located in the same position and by assembling similarly cut coupons as indicated in Figure 2, that the various types or classes ot' coupons which may be indicated by their respective denominations may be instantly referred to without turning all of the individual leaves comprising the entire book. It can further be comprehended that any number of coupons or leaves may be inserted'having the notches positioned in the same location so that the number of pages comprising each section may be varied at will. From an inspection of Figure 2 it will be seen that the various portions 25 to 30 of the respective leaves 11 gradually step downwardly while at the same time corresponding portions 31 are formed which exist on the underside ofthe leaves in exactly the same stepped relation to one another as the aforementioned portions. In the drawings, I have shown the last exposed portion 30 occurring in advance of the iirst under portion 31 so that all of these exposed portions are clearly presented to view by looking downward upon the coupon book. It will, however, be readily comprehended that where the book is thick enough so that the distance from the point 32 to the poin 33 oif these exposed edges is sufficient, that the lowermost edge ot' the coupon may be read from beneath the edge 32 by looking obliquely at the end of the book. It desired the stepping' may continue so that additional exposed portions similar to 30 may be provided extending parallel to and below the respective portions 3l thereby increasino' the number of indexes to the system. This l have shown in Figure in which a number ot upper exposed portions 36 are provided which extend below the portions 37 similar to the portions 3l shown in Figure 2. lt will here be noted that an irregular substantially parallel space 38 is provided which extends diagonally downwardly along the edge ot the book exposing consecutively7 portions -ot different leaves of the book. By running the thumb within the space 38 the same can be stopped upon any oi the exposed index portions 29 which occur below the portions 3T so that the index may be made as extensive as desired and still be rendered perfectly serviceable and effective.
In the drawings have shown portions to provided with indicia indicating the denominations oi5 the coupons represented by the same. rihese indicia run from one cent to one dollar as specilied. The top cover l0 is preferably formed with a slot therein extending up to the estreme edge 34 of the upper coupon 20 at one end and extending clear across said cover at its other end thus leaving all oit the portions 25, Q6, 2?, 28, 29 and 30 and portion 35 or" the upper coupon exposedV on which may be placed the respective index mark. Although l have particularly described my invention as applicable to coupon books it can be readily understood that the same may be used for any sort ot indexes in conjunction with any form oipr book or filing system.
The advantages of my invention are manifest. The entire index system can be constructed for a very trivial cost with a single i,cie, ose
tus which l now consider to represent theA best embodiment thereof, but l desire to have it understood that the construction shown 1s only illustrative and thatpthe invention can be carried out by other means andV applied to uses other than those above set forth within the scope of the following claims.
l claim:
l. In combination with a plurality of sets of consecutively arranged members having different indicia thereon, a marginal slot formed along the edges of each of said sets of members, said slots being of the same width and length and being arranged to successively expose portions of the margins of said members1 the length of said slots being equal to the length of several of the exposed marginal portions of said members whereby a continuous groove extends diagonally through said members. Y
2. in combination with a plurality ot sets of consecutively arranged members having dierent indicia thereon, a marginal slot formed along the lirst set of said members, positioned near one end thereof, similar slots of the saine length and depth formed on each of the others of said sets of members, said slots being positioned to successively expose portions of the margins of said sets ot members and of a length equal to the combined length oit all of the exposed marginal portions whereby a continuous groove eX- tends diagonally through said members.
ln testimony whereof I all'ix my signature.
CHARLES T. RASCHICK.
