DOOR LATCH.
Application filed May 21, 1926. SerialNo. 110,792.
This invention relates to a door latch of to bke-secured as hereinafter described more the type having a spring projectedV bolt conin detail. trolled by an operating member, such as a. Referring to the drawings in detail, a thumb piece, acting through a lever condenotes, generally, the casing having afront nected to the bolt. or face plate I). c is the bolt, the inner end 60 The aim of the invention is to provide a of which is guided by a member d. e is the latch of this sort having various features spring normally urging the bolt into adof novelty and advantage and whichis parfanced position, and f is a lever operatively ticularly characterized by its simplicity and connected to the bolt and pivoted on a stud g.
economy in construction, its durability and The operating member, in the present illus- 65 its effectiveness in operation. Y trative disclosure, is shown as being in the Morel particularly, the aim of the inven-y form of a thumb piece h of the usual type,
- tion is to provide a door latch wherein each and 1l is a handle connected to the door k.
of the parts may be cheaply made; wherein The casing includes two parts, each of the parts may be readily assembled; wherewhich is preferably formed from sheet metal 70 in the bolt has an easy, smooth movement, so as to eiiect economy in manufacture. all danger of the bolt sticking beingelimi.- Gne of these parts hasa side 10, the edges nated; .wherein the part-s are Veffectively of which are bent over so as to form a top maintained in their proper relation, so that wall 11, a bottom wall 12 and a rear wall 13.

The other art of inpart pointed out more in detail hereinthe casing comprises a removable si e plate after. 16 having, in its rear edge, a notch or re SQ rIhe invention accordingly consists in the cess 17 adapted to closely receive an extenfeatures of construction, combination of elesion 18 on the rear wall 13. The forward' ments vandarrangement of parts which will end of the side wall 10 has a projection 19. be exemplified in the construction herein- On the forward edge of the removable side after set forth and the scope of the applica plate 16 is a similar projection 20, and these 85 tion of which will beindicated in the approjections, when the parts are assembled, pended claims. extend into, and engage the respective side In the vaccompanying drawings, wherein edges of, the opening 21 in the face plate I have Shown, for illustrative purposes, one and within which o ening the head 22 of of the many lembodiments which the present the bolt 0 is mounte By constructing the 90 invention may take: casing in the manner described, a very eco Figure 1 is a side view of my improved nomical arrangement is obtained, and the latch with the side plate of the casing reparts may be quickly assembled and are very moved and parts shown in section; securely held together. Furthermore, a

,sideplate 1G when this of the spring and the member d *is a washer 27.
The member d is preferably formedof sheet metal and has a pair of lugs 28 between which fthe shank of the bolt is slidably mounted. The member Z is secured to the wall l() of the casing by peened over lu-gs 30. Carried by one of the lugs 28 is a bent over ear 3l having a. screw threaded aperture 32 adapted to receive a screw 33 by meansof which the removable side plate le is secured in place. It will be noted that this member CZ, which is very simple in construction and which may be economically formed, in addition to acting as a guide forthe bolt, constitutes an .anchor to which the removable side plate 16 is secured.
The lever f has a generally U-shaped body with 'side'portionsBS and 39 and a transrI'he body is of a width substantially co-extensive with the distance betweenfthe sides of the casing so that the'l'ev'er is Imaintained against lateral canting or tilting. Extending upwardly from one side portion .of the U-shaped body is an arm 4l which engages between the member Z anidthebutton 26 of thebolt. Extending rearwardly from one side of the U-shaped body is an apertured ear 42 through which extends the :pivot or stud g. One endf of this pivot `extends through'an aperture in the ywall 10'V and is peened over so as tosecure the. pivot in place. The other end ofthe stud is of reduced diameter and is adapted to engage in a similarly sized aperture 48 inthe plate is in position. It'will be noted that the'lever lf is formed 0f sheet metal so that it may be veconomically manufactured and, when the vparts 'are in place, the l`lever is properly guided in vits movements.
vAdjacent the U-shape'd portion of the lever fthe casing is recessed, as illustrated, so asto accommodatethe operating member whichiis'here shown as being-inthe form of thethumb piece/z of the usual construction. If" desired, 'a secondfthumb piece extending to the opposite side of the door, so that the latch may -be operated from either' side, may be provided, such au arrangement being an-l old and well known one.
'As many changes could-belmade in the above construction and many apparently widely different embodiments of this invention could be made without departingfrom the scope thereof, it is intendedl that all matter contained in the above description or shown in the accompanying drawing shall be interpreted as-illustrative and not in a` limit-in(T sense.
