A. N. PASMAN WASTE PIPE FITTING Filed Jan. 24, 1925' Patented Feb. 22, 1927.
UNITE-D Ares manna; N. rAsMAN, or WATERIBURY, CONNECTICUT, ssIe'NoR' T scovILr. -MANU- YFACTURI'NG COMPANY, or WATERBURY, ooNNEo'rIcur, A CORPORATION or con NECTICUT.
WAs'rE-PIPE FITTING.
This invention relates to an improvement in waste pipe fittings, and more particularly to the overflow connection leading from a bath tuber other fixture to the waste pipe. Heretofore, it has been common practice to provide the upper end of the overflow to the waste" pipe with a flanged elbow adapted to bear againstthe outer face of a bath tub -or other-fixture, and no difficulty of a serious nature was experienced in making the necessary connection between this elbow and the tub where the walls of the tub were vertical or upright or substantially so because in such instances the "overflow pipe being vertical was practically parallel to the adjacent wall of the tub and the flange on the elbow was easily placed to contact uniformly with the outer face ofthe tab. In instances, however, where, as is now the case with niany bath tubs and similar fixtures, the walls, and particularly the wall at the end of the tubv is flaring or made at an inclination, considerable diflic'ulty has 7 been experienced in making this joint, and the object of my present invention is to provide a fitting for a waste pipe overflow to overcome these difficulties In carrying out the invention the waste pipe overflow at the upper end thereof is preferably provided with an elbow having a ball or spherical face, which, however, may be provided with a 'curvedsurface of any nature and fitted with a gasket adapted to assume an offset position thereon so as to bear evenly both against the curved surface of the elbow and also against the outer inclined surface of the tub. I also prefer to employ a gasket retainer or a device for preventing the radial spread of the gasket beyond a predetermined extent, and of course the fitting includes means for maintaining the elbow in position with the gasket in place and intervening between the same and. the outer wall of the tub, as will be hereinafter more particularly described.
In the drawing:
Fig. 1 is a sectional elevation of that portion of the waste pipe fitting involving my invention showing the parts separated and in their respective positions as ready to be assembled.
the parts in place.
Fig. 2 is a similar view showingthe parts assembled.
Fig. 3 1s. an elevation and partial section of the elbow-comprising a part of the fitting, f x
substantially spherical although as will be understood the curvature of the face may be varied depending upon conditions in use without departing from the nature of the invention, In the curved faced end of the elbow there is an inlet opening 13.
The fitting also includes a flanged retainer ring 14 and a gasket 15,. The gasket 15 is preferably triangular in cross section as illustrated in the drawing and is adapted to fit within the flanged ring retainer 14 to prevent the gasket from spreading radially more than a predetermined extent which of course is defined by the peripheral flange of the ring. a
. In the drawing the wall of a bath tubror otherfixture is designated by: 16 andis provided with the usual'overflow opening. -My improved fitting also includes a plate 17 adapted to extend over the overflow opening in the wall of the tub and provided with suitably spaced apertures 18 for the passage of water or other liquid, together with a centrally disposed opening 19 through which a post 20 passes to engage a bar to secure As is customary, the inner end of the post 20 is screw threaded as shown in the drawing and the outer end thereof provided with an eye 21 in which there is a ring 22 for connection with the customary stopper chain 28.
As indicated in Figs. 1 and 2, the elbow 11 interiorly is provided with a bar 24 fixed centrally with a tapped opening 25 for the reception of the screw threaded end of the post 20 so that when the parts are assembled and the post turned to position with the shoulder 26 on the post bearing against the outer surface of the plate 17 the gasket will be compressed between the curved surface of the flange, the edge of the wall defining the opening in the tub, and also preferably against the inner surface of the plate 17, the spread of the gasket being limited radially as hereinbefore stated by the flange on the ring 14. The parts being thus assembled a sufficiently tight joint is made for the overflow connection from the tub or otherfixture to the Waste pipe.
As shown in Fig.4, in some instances, particularly where the angle of inclination of the wall of the tub is relatively great it may be necessar or advisable to so construct the elbow and t 1e cross bar thereof that the cross bar will turn to accommodate itself to a position in which the post may be readily engaged in the tapped opening in the cross bar. As illustrated in this figure, the crossbar isdesignated at 27 and at the ends thereof, one end only being shown, there are trunnions 28 adapted to engage in sockets 29 providedfor this purpose in bosses 30 on the inner surface of the elbow. In this structure, as will be readily under stood, irrespective of the inclination of the wall of the tube the parts of the fitting may be assembled and connected and in so doing the cross bar will automatically adjust itself to that position in which the post 20 may be readily turned down in the tapped opening in the cross bar to connect and secure the parts in their assembled relationship.
I claim as my invention: a l
1. In a waste pipe fitting, an elbow having an outer spherically rounded surface at one end thereof, a gasket adapted to seat in any one of various positions against the spherically rounded surface of the elbow toaccomlTIOdHtGllZ-Sblf thereto and also to bear against the edge defining an opening in an inclined wall, and devices for securing the gasket in place and preventing the same from spreading radially more than a predetermined extent.
2. In a. waste pipe fitting, an elbow havin an outer rounded surface at one end thereo a gasket adapted to seat in] any one of various positions against the rounded surface of the elbow to accommodate itself thereto and also to bear against the edge defining an opening in an inclined wall, means for securing the gasket in place between the said wall and the said rounded surface of the elbow, and means for preventing the gasket from spreading radially more than a predetermined extent.
3. In a waste pipe, fitting, an overflow pipe, an elbow having a substantially spherical outer surface at one end thereof, a gasket adapted to assumeany one of various positions against the said spherical outer surface of the elbow to accommodate itself thereto and also to bear against the edge defining an opening in an inclined wall, a plate adapted to bear against the outer surface of the said wall and to cover the said opening therein, and meansfor simultaneously maintaining the said plate in posit-ion and securing the gasket in place between the said wall andthe spherical surface ofthe elbow. 4:. In a waste pipe fitting, an overflow pipe, an elbow having a substantially spherical outer surface at one end thereof, a gasket adapted to assume any one of various positions against the said spherical outer sur face of the elbow to accommodate itself thereto andalso to bear againstthe edge defining an opening in an inclined wall, a bar extending transversely across the elbow and mounted to turn therein, a plate fitting ovcrthe opening inthe said wall, and a pin passing through thesaidiplate and engaging the said transverse bar for simultaneously maintaining the plate in position; and securing the gasket in place between the wall and the spherical surface of the elbow.
igned by me this 29th dayof Dec. 1924.
