Application filed September so, 1926, Serial No. 138,588, and in 'G ermany December 1c, 1925. i i
The present invention relates to a type of tobacco cutting machines in which the tobacco is fed into the path of a reciprocat- The knife is of flat-blade construct-ion and is held in a carrier, the latter being reciprocated 1n suchmanner that the knife is given an end-wise movement trans-v versely of'thepath in which the tobacco is fed. The knife is normally adjusted in such manner as to bear against faces disposed at opposite sides of the opening in the device through which the tobacco is fed.
1 The present invention has for its object means for, adjusting the knife, by movement toward said'faces, during the operation of the machine and from a point at the side of the tobacco opening, and to provide such a construction as to enable the use of relatively light compact adjusting means which shall not be subjected to such major stresses as to limit their life and throw undue strain Figure 2 isa front elevation of the same;
FigureS is an enlarged detail view of certain primary members of the adjusting mechanism in the same position as shown in Figure 2, and
Figure 4 is a sectional enlargement of the adjusting screw and helical gears in side elevation.
In machines of the present type the knife is engaged and directly adjusted by movements of pressure levers, and the sand levers are connected with means for moving them a on their fulcrums to impart more or less pressure to the knife blade at the lower portion thereof. In the art are disclosed.
tobacco cutting machines in which the adjustment of the knife may be effected during the operation of the machine, this being accomplished through pressure levers operated by an adjustable spindle carried in a stationary bearing and connected to the screw or screws of the pressure levers by means of universal joints. In such devices the universal joints must be of very substantial construction, and the knife holder has been unnecessarily heavily loaded, further swam KOERNER; or nnnsnnn, GER ANY, assrenon To rinrrnn orennnr rn m;
objections being. that the adjustment means I as a whole were in front of the knife and thus obscuring the cutting action and obstructing access tothe cuttobacco.
In the present invention the machine coin prises a framel of anysuitable construction, to which a pair of spaced swingingles vers 2 are pivoted. The levers at their.
front ends are bent upwardly at substan tlally right angles Tandv support between them the knife carrier 3. 1 In the knife car-I rier the knife 4; is held in the usual manner.
The knife carrieris reciprocated by means of a crank rod 5' operatively connected to a crank shaft 5 which is rotated in the usual manner. In view of'thefact that the knife carrieris connected to the ends' of the swing; ing levers 2, the carrier follows the arcuate path described by the levers. 3
()n the knife carrier 3' are pivoted'on 'a shaft 7 two double arm pressure levers 6. The lower end of each lever presses the knife against the fa'ces18 of the, tobacco opening or channel 18, and the upper end of each lever is provided with a threaded aperture to receive the threaded stem of an ad justing screw 8. Each screw passes through a yoke member l forming a part of the upper end of the appropriate swinging lever 2 and is held against e-ndwise movement in said yoke through the fact that it is keyed to a helical gear 10, theside faces of which abut the arms of the yoke. Each adjusting screw I is provided; with a hand wheel 9, so that the screws may be rotated by'the hand wheels" while the machine is at rest. 7
Helical gear 1O is in mesh with-a similar gear-'11, the latter being carried by shaft 12 mounted in the bearing extensions 13 of yoke 1 Shaft 12 is connected'to a second shaft 15 by a universal joint 14:. Shaft 15 extends to the right hand frame member'l and passes, through a bearing 16 which is free to rotate. In other words, the bearing 16, has a ball andsocketconnection with the said frame member 1. .At the right hand priate pressure lever in such direction as to clamp or release the knife blade.
As the knife carrier is reciprocated by the action of crankrod 5 and controlling swinging levers 2, shaft 12 Will be bodily swung and shaft 15 will have a slight endwise movement in rotary bearing 16, as indicated by the dotted lines, Figure 3. It Will be noted that the movement of-the hand Wheel is very slight. Such movement will not be Sut'licient to prevent the ready rotation of. the hand Wheel and adjustment of the knife while the latter is in action. It is possible "to adjust either one of. the pressure levers, or both together, in either direction, While the machine is operating at a high rate of speed.
By neans-pf the present invention it is possible to employ. light universal-jointed shaftsto transmit therequired pressure on theknife, andatogreatly reduce the inertia of} the parts, which inertia was present owing, to the constructions otttliezprior art devices.
Having described my invention, What I claimand desire to secure by Letters Patentis as .follows 1. In a device of the character described,
2. In a device of the character described, a blade, a blade carrier, means for reciprocating the carrier, a pressure lever bearing on the blade, and means for adjusting said pressure lever comprising a member; carried by the lever and so mounted "as Wheirrotated to rock the lever, a spindle extending substantially at right angles to said adjusting member, gear connectionsintermediate said adjusting member and the spindle, a hand wheel carried by the spindle, and supporting means for the spindle permitting both ateral and endwise movement thereof.
3. In a device a blade, at bladecarrier, andmeans for re ciprocating the carrier, spaced pressure levers pivotally n onnted'on the carrier, a yol-ce member supported by the carrier, foreach pressure lever, a gear mounted interniediatet'he arms ofthe yoke, an ad usting shaft passing through the yoke and keyed to the ear, the shaft being threaded in an apei lire, formed in the appropriate pressure lever, a second gear supported by the yoke, and spindle anduniversal jointconnections intermediate said second gear and a hand wheel, said connections being disposed substantially at right anglesto the ad usting screw, and the hand Wheel being disposed at one side of the knife.
Intestimony whereof, I have signed my.
name to this. specification. I
EWALD KOERNER.
