type in which the articles to be wrapped are' advanced one at a time (by a continuouslymoving conveyor) past folding devices which operate to fold a wrapper about each article insuch manner as to form an openended pouch which encloses the forward end, the top and bottom, and the sides of the article, and which projects at its open end beyond the adjacent rear end of the article by an amount sufficient to allow of the pro jecting portion being folded down to complete the wrapping.
In a typical machine of the above class the articles are advanced along a horizontal support by an endless conveyor provided with upstanding ele-ments (hereinafter referred to as pushers') spaced apart and each adapted to engage the rear end of the article and to push the latter along the'support and between stationary guides which operate to fold a wrapper about the article in the manner described above. The wrapper, which is fed across the, path of the conveyor in a plane at right-angles thereto,` isengaged by the front end of the article and carried forward thereby past the guides aforesaid which perform the folding operations. The partially wrapped article is then removed from the conveyor and the operations involved in folding down the open end of the wrapper then performed.
W'hen the conveyor is of the type provided with pushers adapted to make end-on engagement with the rear faces of the articles, it is essential that the partially wrapped articles be moved ahead of the conveyor at a speed greater than thel linear speed at which the conveyor is driven; otherwise the pushers as they reach the end of trie conveyor path would be liable to foul the projecting portion of the wrapper at the rear end of each article.
The present invention is concerned with means for removing the partially wrapped articles from the conveyor and with means for tucking in the sides ofthe projecting portion of the wrapper.
According to the invention a kwrapping machine of the type hereinbefore described and having transfer members operable to engage in turn each partially wrapped article as it approaches the end of the conveyor and to move said article forward in advance of the conveyor, iscliaracterized in that the transfer members aforesaid are' arranged to vengage the rear end face of the partially wrapped article and to push the latter forward clear of the conveyor.
In wrapping apparatus of the type with which this invention is 'concerned it has hitherto been proposed, for the'purpose of advancing the kpartially wrapped articles clear of the conveyor, to employ as transfer members a pair of rollers (havingy tucking elements-carried thereby) driven at a peripheral speed greater than the linear speed of the conveyor and arranged to engage the .sides of the partially wrapped article and by frictional engagement therewith to drag the latter forward clear of theccnveyor.
YAn advantage of the arrangement en bodying this invention is that the action of the transfer members (which malte a positive end-on engagement 'with each article) is independent of small variations in the width of the articles on which the zwrapping operations are performed. I
In the preferred form of the present invention the movement of the transfer members to engage the aforesaid end face of the partially wrapped article is effected in a direction (e. aslant the path of the cow veyor) such that the transfer nieinbers first engage. the sides of the projecting portion of the wrapper and close said sidesagainst the end face of the article, the transfer members thereby yconstituting tucking elements as well as means to' advance the article aheadL of the conveyor. Conveniently the transfer members are located .on opposite. sides respectively of the conveyor and are mounted for reeiprocatory'movement in a horizontal plane, the travel of each member beingsueh 'that it first enters the path of the conveyor (preferably in a slanting direction) then moves said path (during which time while the article is advanced clear of the conveyor.
An example of an apparatus embodying the foregoingand other features of the invention will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawings in which F igure1 is a sideelevation showing cer'- tain parts of the said apparatus, Figure 2 is a plan of Figure 1, and Figure 3 is an endelevat-ion (looking toward the -left in Figure 2) of the said apparatus, Figure d is a perspective view of the completely wrapped package, Figures 5 and 6 lare perspective views of anlarticle with its wrapper, as they appearV at different stages oit the wrapping of the said article, Figure 7 is a sectional view, in perspective of the hereiiibefore mentioned'folding-blades, Figures 8 and 9, respectively, are a plan and end view (partly in section) of the said folder-blades, Figures 10 and 11 are detail sectional views showing' a modified arrangement of folding-blades, and Figures 12 and 13 are sectional views of the aforementioned chute,` and adjacently disposed members. Figures 4l to 13 inclusive are drawn to a. larger scale than are Figures 1, 2, and 3.
A pair of side- frames 1 and 2 are provided with bosses in which certain spindles and shafts, which will be referred to later, are
supported; on the upper portions of the said side-frames land 2, various other constituent elements of the apparatus are supported.
A magazine is supported in a vertical position, and a number of the articles to be wrapped are .deposited therein by an attendant.

and actuate the said article to travel alongv a rectilinear path, and thereby to come into engagement with a wrapper 6, (which is fed by hand or by any suitable actuating means between the elements 7 and 8 of a guiding device, to a receiving element 9, in such manner that the said wrapper 6 will be supported temporarily in a plane intersecting the path along which the said articles are actu-` ated to travel).
Folding means are provided which co-operate with the forward travelling movement of the said article to fold thewi'apper 6 into the forni of an open-ended pouch or poclref like covering on to the said article, and operable means are provided whereby portions of the wrapper' 6, which project lbeyond the article, at the open end'of the pouch or pocketlill-:e covering, can be folded downen to the adjacently disposed end of the article.
According to my invent-ion, the said pushing means comprisea pair of endless chains 1() and 10a which are supportedonsproclret wheels 11, 11a, 12'and 12, arranged on'conveniently arranged shafts. One of the said shafts, on which thesprocletfwheels 12 and 12L are secured, is sliewn at 13, and issupported in bosses 14na and 141 provided respectively on the side frames 1 and 2. Continuously rotative movement is imparted, by means of an electric-motor, or other source of power, to the shaft 13 and then to the sprocket-wlieels 12 and 12L in such manner that the upper runs of the chains 10 and 10A will be actuated thereby to travel in a direction from left to rightl of Figures 1 and 2.
A number of transversely arranged cross bars 14 are supported at equally spaced distances from each other along, and are actuable by means of, tle pair of chains 10 and 10a. On each side oi said cross-bars 14 a slot is provided, and a pusher 16 is adjustably secured, (by meansof a screw, not shewn, in-V sortedl from the underside of the cross-bar 14 into the base-portion Vof the pusher 16) in any desired position between the respective ends of its corresponding cross-'bai' 1e.

One of the said folding-blades is carried on a bar which is jointably connected by a pin 44 to a lever 45 which is oscillatably supported, by means of a pin 46 on a roller arm 47.
A spindle 48 is supported on the bracket 37, and the roller arm 47 is oscillatably carried thereon. A roller 49 is arranged on the roller arm 47, and the camBO imparts suitably timed movements to the roller 4 and thereby tothe roller-arm 47.
The lever is operably connected, by means of a link 50 and pin 51, to the crankpin 32.
The bar 52, on which the said foldingblade is carried, is provided with a pin 53. Y A system of linkwork is provided in connection with the said folding-blade operating means and is adapted to coact with the said operating-means and thereby canse the said folding-blade to move in a certain predetermined path relatively to the particulararticle 17 and wrapper 6 on which the said blade is, at the time being, actuated to Voperate. i i
The said system of link-work includes a bell-crank 54 plvotally supported on the pin 46. The end of one arm of the bell-crank 54 is jointably connected by a link anc. pin 56Ytoa pin 57 arranged on the aforesaid bracket 37. The end of the other arm of the bell-crank 54 is provided with an eyebolt 58, in which the screw-threaded end of a rod 59 is slidably supported. The other endl 60 of the rod 59 is jointably vattached by means of the pin 53, to the bar 52. A coil-spring 61 is arranged on the rod 59 between the end 60 and the eye-bolt 58. A nut 62 is screwed on to the threaded end of the rod 59. Y
I have described an arrangement of motion-tinnsmitting members and vlink-work operable. in connection with the folder-blade which is provided on the bar 52 shewn on the lowerportion of Figure 2.
A similar arraiigement of motion-transmitting members and link-work is provided in connection with the folder-blade which is provided on a bar 52L shewn on the upper portion of Figure 2; the said similar arrangement of members and link-work is shewn on the accompanying drawings, but

The folding-blades 64 and 64L retain the Y said article 17 with its wrapper 6 for a Vconsurface of the partially wrapped article 17, up'and on to the end of the article 17, (see Figure 12).

The said upward movement of the said partially wrapped articley 17 and wrapper 6, causes the lower edges 94 and 94a of the respective channel-shaped members 67v and 67a v(see Figures 12 and 13) rtocoact with the wrapper y6 to yfoldaportion of the wrapper 6 which is adjacent to the upperk surface of kthe partially wrapped `article17 in the vertical chute, lon, to these portions of the' wrapper v6 which have been folded already (by the vmeans and in they manner herein set forth) on tothe end of the article 17 so that the said article 17 with its wrapper 6 will be caused thereby to appear as shewn in Figure 4. e A modified construction of the said folding-blades and adjacently disposed members, also in accordance with my invention, is shewn in Figures 10 and 11. These folding blades and associated parts are adapted to replace the blades 64 and 64a.

'One pair of the said retaining elements and a corresponding folding-blade are operably provided in proximity to the channel-shaped member 67 of the. vertical chute and are shewn in the said Figures 10 and 1-1; a similar pair of retaining elements and a corresponding and similar foldingblade are operably provided in proximity to the channel-shaped member 67, but are not shewn on the accompanying drawings.
Extension arms 95 and 96 are provided on the channel-shaped member 67.
Retaining elements 97 and98 are respectively support-ed, iny pivotal mann-er by pins 99 and 100 on the fextension arms 95 and 96 and are parallel to the path of movement of the article to be wrapped. A spring 1011s arranged on ythe pin 99, and yieldably actuates the retaining element 97 to move ing element 98 in a similar manner.

Having now particularly described and 'ascertained the nature .of my said invention and in what manner the saine is to be per-y folding devices operable during the advanceV of each article to fold a wrapper about it to the form of an open-ended pouch whereof the open end is adjacent to and projects beyond the rear end-face of the article, and i meansoperable near the end of th-e conveyor path to engage the aforesaid rear end-face of each pouch-enclosed article and to move said article ahead of the conveyor at a speed greater than that of the conveyor and to a position clear of the latter.

In a wrapping machine of the class specified for wrapping articles in paper or like material, the combination of a continuously moving conveyor for advancing the articles in succession along a fixed path, folding devices operablek during the advance of each article to fold a wrapper about it to the form of an openended pouchV whereof the open end isl adjacent to and projects beyond the rear end-face of the article, and means located near the end of the conveyor path and operable on each pouch-enclosed Y article first to engage and tuck in the sides of the aforesaid projecting portion of the pouch and thereafter by end-on engagement with the article to advance the latter to a position clear of thev end of the conveyor and ata speed greater than that of said conveyor. 3. ln a Wrapping machine ofthe class specified for Wrapping articlesin paper or like material, the combinationof a'continuously moving conveyor for advancing the articles in succession along a fixed path, folding devices operable during the advance of each article to fold a Wrapper about it to the form of an open-ended pouch Whereof the open end'is adjacent to and projects beyond the rear end-face of the article, trans fer members mounted near the end of the conveyor path for movement in a plane containing said path and on opposite sides thereof respectively, and means operable on the approach of each pouch-enclosed article to bring the transfer members aforesaid into engagement With the rear end-face of the article, then to move said members ahead of the conveyor toy a position beyond the end thereof and at a speed greater than kthat of the conveyor, and thereafter to Withdraw the transferl members from engagement With the article and to return them to their initial positions.
4. ln a Wrapping machine 'of the class specified for Wrapping articles infpaper or like material, the combination of a continuously moving conveyork for advancing the articles in succession along a fixed path, folding devices operable during the advance of each article to fold a Wrapper about it to the form of an open-ended pouch whereof the open end is adjacent to and projects beyond Ythe rear end-face of the article, transfer members mounted near the end of the conveyor for movement in the plane of the advancing articles and on opposite sides thereof respectively and'means operable on the approach of each pouch-enclosed article first tomove the transfer members against the sides of the projecting end-por ion of the pouch and into the path of the conveyor, then to move the transfer members along said path at a speed greater than that of the conveyor and to a position be yond vthe end of the latter, and thereafter to Withdraw the transfer members from kthe path of the article and to return them to their initial positions.
5; In a Wrapping machine of the class specified for Wrapping articles inl paper or like material, the combination of a continuously moving conveyor for advancingr the articles in succession along a fixed path, folding devices operable during the advance of each article to fold a Wrapper about it to the form of an open-end pouch whereof the open end is adjacent to and projects beyond the rear end-face of the article, transfer members mounted near the end of the conveyor for movement in the plane of the advancing articles yand on opposite sides thereof respectively, means operable on the approach of each pouch-enclosed article first to move the transfer members against the sides of the projecting,` end-portion of the pouchV and into the path of the conveyor, then to move the transfer members along said path at a speed kgreater than thatk of the conveyor and to a position beyond the end of the latter', and thereafter to Withdraw the transfer members from the path of the article and to return them to their initial position, the aforesaid means for movingthe transfer members being constituted by a separate mechanism allocated to eachy member and comprising a linkmounted at one end on a floating pivot and at the other' end operatively connected to the transfer member, means for oscillating the link about its pivot in a directionV to move the transfer' member substantially parallel `Withk the conveyor path, and means to reciprocate the floating pivot aforesaid in a direction rtransverse to the conveyor path. f
G. ln a Wrapping machine of the class specih d for Wrapping articles in paper or lilre material, the combination of a continuously movingl conveyor yfor advancing the articles in succession along va'fixed path, folding devices operable during the advance of ach article to folda Wrapper about it to the form of an open-ended pouch whereof the open end is adjacent to and projects beyond the rear end-face of the article, transfer members mounted near the end of the conveyor for movement in the plane of the advancl g articles and on opposite sides thereof respectively, means operable on the approach of each pouch-enclosed article first to move the tran'sfermembers againstithe sides of the projecting` end-portion of the pouch and into the path of the conveyor, then to move the transfer members along said path at a speed `greater than that of the kconveyor andito aposition beyond the end'of the latter, and thereafter to Withdraiv the transfer members from the path of the article and to return them to their initial positions, and means to constrain each transfer member to move parallel to itself throughout its Whole travel.
7. ln a Wrapping machineL of the class specified for Wrapping` articles in paper or like material, the combination of a continu ously moving conveyor for advancing the articles in succession along a xed path, folding devices operable during the advance of each article to fold a wrappery about it to the form of an open-ended pouch whereof K the open end is adjacent to and projects beyond the rear kend-face ofthe article, transfer members mounted near the end of the conveyor for movement in the plane of the advancing articles and on opposite sides thereof respectively, means operableV on the approach of each pouch-enclosed article .first Cil CII
to move the transfer members against the sides of the projecting end-portion of the pouchr and into the path of the conveyor, then to move the transfer members along said path at a speed greater than that ofber, meansfor oscillating the link about its pivot in a direction to move the transfer member substantially"parallel with the conveyor path, means to reciprocate the floating pivot aforesaid in a direction transverse to the conveyor path, and means to constrain each transfer member to move parallel to itself throughout its Whole travel.

In a Wrapping machine of the class specified for Wrapping articlesin paper or like material, the combination of a continuously moving conveyor for advancing the articles in succession along a fixed path, folding devices operable during the advance of each article to fold` a wrapper about it to the form of an open-ended pouch whereof the open end is adjacent to and projects beyond the rear end-face of the article, two transfer members mounted near the end of the conveyor for movement in the` plane of the advancing articles and on opposite sides thereof respectively, a reciprocating mechanism for each transfer member comprising means operable on the approach of eachV ypoiiclrenclosed article first to close-the transfer member against the side of the projecting portion of the pouch and into engagement with the rear end-face of the ar-V ticle, then to move the transfer member forward at a speed greater than that of the conveyor andl to a position beyond the end of the latter and thereafter to withdraw the member from engagement and to return it to its initial position, and a lost-motion connection and a spring between each transfer member and its reciprocating mechanism,- normally operative to talre up the lost nio-- tion in said connection.

12. In a wrapping machine of the class specified for wrapping articles in paper or like material, the combination of an endless chain conveyor whereof the upper" lap is movable continuously in the same direction along a horizontal path, upstanding pusher pieces spaced apart on the conveyor and adapted to engage the rear ends of the arti-u cles and to push the latter at spaced inter-` vals along the aforesaid path, stationary folding devices located above and below and at the sides of the aforementioned path and operable during the advance of each article to fold a wrapper about it to the form of an open-ended pouch whereof the open end is adjacent to and projects beyond the rear end-face of the article, two transfer members mounted near the forward end of the conveyor for reciprocation in the plane of the advancinr articles and on o osite sides thereof respectively, and associated with each transfer member a reciprocating mechanism operable on the approach of each pouch-enclosed article to move the transfer member in a direction aslant the conve-yor path against the side of the projecting endportion of the pouch and thence into engagement with the rear end of the article, then to move the transfer member forward to a position clear of the end of the conveyor and at a speed greater than that of said conveyor', and thereafter to withdraw the transfer member' from engagement with the article and to return said member to its initial position.
18. In a wrapping machine of the class specified for wrapping articles in paper or like sheet material the combination of conveyor means for advancing the articles in succession along a fixed path, folding devices operable during the advance of each article to fold a wrapper about it to the form of Van open-ended pouch whereof the open end is adjacent to and projects beyond the rear end-face of the article, tucking elements mounted on opposite sides respectively of the aforesaid fixed path for reciprocatory movement into said path, and means operable when a pouch-enclosed article is adjacent to the tucking elements first to close said elements against the sides of the aforesaid projecting portion of the pouch and into engagement with the rear end-face of the article, then to move the tucking ele ments forward along the pathaforesaid and thereafter to withdraw said elements from engagement with the article and to return them to their initial positions by a bac-le ward movement parallel with the path aforesaid.

In a wrapping machine of the class specified for wrapping articles in paper or like sheet material the combination of conveyor means to advance the articles in succession along a fixed path, folding devices operable during the travel of each article along the path aforesaid to fold a wrapper about it in the form of an open-ended pouch whereof the open end is adjacent to and projects beyond the rear end-face of the article, stationary guides located on opposite sides of the path aforesaid and arranged to engage the sides of the pouch-enclosed articles, tucking elements located side by side with the guides aforesaid and movable into and out of the space enclosed between them` means operable when a pouch-enclosed article is located between the guides aforesaid yto close the tucking elements against the `sides of the projecting end portion of the pouch and into engagement withk the rear end-face of the article, then to ymove the tucking elements forward along a continuation of the aforesaid Xed path and thereafter to withdraw said elements from engagement with the article and to return them to their initial positions, and means to constrain each tucking element to move parallel to itself throughout its whole travel.
