In addition to the general objects recited above, the invention includes among its objects such other improvements and advantages' in construction and operatlon as are found to obtain in the structures and devices hereinafter described or claimed.
In the accompan ing drawings, formin a part of this speci cation, and showing for purposes of exemplification, a preferred form and manner in which the invention may be embodied and produced, but without limiting the claimed invention specifically to such illustrative instance or instancesz", Figure 1 is a vertical longitudinal sec- 5 tional view throughthe impression roller of a check endorsing machine and illustrating the preferred embodiment of the present invention attached to said impression roller.
Fig.2 is a transverse section on line 2-2 of Fig. 1;
' Fig. 3 is a similar view showing the 1 method of adjusting the type bars or slugs on the type frame.
Fig. 4 is a plan view on a smaller scale 85 of the structure illustrated in Fig. 1.
Fig. 5 is an enlarged perspective view of one of the removable type bars or slugs.
In the embodiment illustrated in the drawings, the invention is incorporated in a machine that is especially designed for endorsing bank checks. For convenience, the present description will be confined to the illustrated embodiment of the invention as applied to such a check endorsing machine. The various features of the invention are, however, susceptible of use with other machines, and of other valuable applications; hence, the invention is not confined in scope to the specific use and embodiment herein described as an illustrative example.
Referring to the drawings, 1 'n-dicates the impression roller of a check endorsing ma.- chine removably journaled on trunnions or stub shafts 2 which in turn are suitably supported in uprights or standards 3 of a check endorsing or marking machine. The stub shafts or trunnions 2 may be adjusted longitudinally of the supports with respect tothe impression roller 1 by means of suitable set screws 4 carried by the supports 3. The trunnions 2, through the intermediary of the ball bearings 5 of which their ends are fashioned to constitute the cones, support the opposite ends of the printing or type impression roller 1 and provide a substantially frictionless bearing construction for the said type roller. A cam-shaped plate 6 is secured to one end of the impression type roller 1, the purpose of which is to cooperatewith other mechanisms in the check endorsing machine to impart the desired intermittent or continuous rotation of the impression roller. This cam plate 6 and the various elements with which it cooper.- ates to produce the desired rotation of the impression roller has been made the subject matter of a separate application Serial No. 596,728, and, forming no part of the present invention, will not be further described.
The cylindrical body portion 7 of the impression roller is suitably secured as by screws 7 to the opposite end plates 8 and this body portion is further provided with a type plate 9 one portion of 1ts outer surface and which carries the fixed type. The type plate 9 is further provided with a central substantially rectangular aperture 10 disposed in alignment with a corresponding aperture 11 on the cover pelts-12 of the impression or type roller. The changeable data to be printed on the check or other matter desired to be marked thereon is carried by the adjustable type frame within the impression cylinder and is designed to pro ect through the aligned apertures 10 and 11 when the machine is in operation.
The cover 12 is provided with a p1n 13 adapted to be engaged by a hook 14 wh ch is pivoted at 15 to the body of the cylinder, and the cover plate is further provided with a curved spring engaging pin or element 16 which is fastened to the cover at a point substantially, oppositethe pin 13, the end of the pin or hook 16 being adapted to have a resilient engagement with an aperture 17 in the body of the cylinder. Therefore. it will be apparent that when it is desired to remove the cover plate 12 from the body of the impression roller 1, it is only necessary to swing the hook 14 from engagement with the pin 13 and press the locking pin 16 from its engagement with the aperture 17, and the cover plate carrying the type plate 9 may be bodily removed from the impression cylinder in order to obtain access to the interior thereof.
- Formed centrally of the opposing end plates 8 of the impression or type cylinder are a pair of opposed bossed portions 18 carrying a pair of trunnions 19. The trunnions 19 constitute a support for the adjustable type frame adapted to becarried within the impression roller and which type frame is designated as an entirety by 20.
In its preferred embodiment; thetype frame comprises end members 21 secured to a pair of block members 22, and side plate 21. Between the blocks 22 are adapted to project the type and resilient carrying frame to be described. The end members 21 are rovided with notches or recesses 23 at their ower ends and which are adapted to be engaged and supported by the reduced end portions of the trunnions 19. Looking springs 24 are provided and are secured to the inner faces of the members 21, said springs having apertures 25 adapted to register with-the recesses or slots 23 in the side members 21. The locking springs 24 are'further provided with depending handle portions 26 by means ofwhich the locking springs and type frame secured thereto may be removably secured upon the opposing ends of the trunnions 19. Access to the handle portions 26 of the locking springs is provided in the nature of suitable holes or apertures 27 formed in the lower part of the cylindrical body of the impression roller. A type frame supporting spindle or shaft 28 is secured to the horizontal portion 22 of the type frame by means of screws or bolts 29 having a screw threaded engagement with the member 22 and which screws at their lower ends pass through apertures in reduced or flattened portions 30 at each end of the supporting shaft 28. Coil springs 31 are interposed on the screws 29 and bear against the spindle and horizontal member 22 to insure a resilient and yieldable tions 33 provided with apertures for en gagement with the shaft 28; The channel bar member further comprises a horizontal channel portion 34 formed by a pair of upstanding channel walls or flanges 35. The several parts described of the channel member 32, including the depending apert'ured leg members and channel portion, are preferably integrally formed of metal and provide a unitary structure which is mounted upon the supporting shaft 28.
A plurality of tubular separators 36 of any desired number are provided and are rotatably mounted on the stationary shaft 28, the size and number of these rotatable separating elements being governed by the size and number of the type slugs which are intended to be used for a particular operation of the device. A plurality of sheet metal separators or spacing guide plates 37 are provided and loosely mounted upon the shaft 28 between the spacing members 36. The separating plates 37 are cut away at their upper. portlons to provide recesses 39 adapted to engage and'be supported by.the
' upstanding walls of the horizontal channel portion of the channel bar 32.
The desired number and series of type bars or slugs 40 are adjustably carried between the separator plates 37, and each series of slugs is rotatably mounted with respect to the spindle 28 and channel bar 32 by means of endless resilient coil springs 41 passing at their lower portions around the tubular separators'or bearing members 36 and, passing at their upper ends over the channel member 32 (Fig. 2). The type slugs 40 are adjustably carried on the springs 41 by means of apertures 42 in the type bars through which the springs are passed. 'Each ty e bar is further provided with a second aperture 43 adapted for the reception of an adjusting handle (Fig. 3). The desired indicia to be impressed or stamped upon the check is shown at 44 and, as illustrated in Fig. 5, is
43 of the type slugs. The resiliency of thesorted in the horizontal channelportion 32 of the type frame (Figs. 3 and 2), at which time when the tool 45 isremoved from engagement with the type slng,the spring 41 resumes its normal position and cooperates with the channel member 32 to retain the desired type slug in position to be applied-to the check or other paper to be marked when the impression roller is rotated. Each series of type slugs and retaining springs 41 are rotatable on the spindle 28 when the type are being adjustedby the adjusting tool 45, such rotation being permitted by the loose engagement of the tubular separators 3G with the said spindle. y
\Vhen it is desired to remove the type frame from the impression cylinder it is only necessary to reach the handle portions 24 of the opposed'locking springs 23 through the apertures 27 in the impression cylinder and by compressing the handle portions toward one another the apertures 25 are released from engagement with the trunnions 19, thus permitting the type frame to be lifted as an entirety from its-normal portion in engagement with the trunnions 19. The type frame and type carried thereby may be removed from the impression cylinder after the cover plate 12 has been removed from the cylinder as heretofore described. It will further be apparent that by the provision of the springs 31 a resilient mounting of the channel 32 and type carried thereby is effected with respect to the stationary portion of the type frame and a certain amount of resilience is imparted to the type which projects through the aperture in the impression cylinder, such resilience being desirable when impressing dates or indicia upon the checks.
