CORD PROTECTING AND SUPPORTING DEVICE.
Application filed January 4, 1924. Serial No. 684,458.
This invention relates to electric wiring devices and in particular to means'for supporting and protecting electric 'wires or cords used in connection with sockets, connectors, etc., from the strain on the same that occurs in the ordinary use thereof.
The primary object of the invention is to take the stress or strain or the binding posts of devices of the character named and to prevent short circuits occurring, from the chafing and frequent bending of the cords, causing frayed cords or wires in cases Where attachment plugs and the like are hastily pulled from sockets or similar receptacles by the said cords or wires, especially where heavy fixtures are swung by cords from the ceiling.
Another object of the invention is to provide a device of the class described which shall be simple in construction, inexpensive to manufacture, and which will be efiicient and durable in practical use.
With the above named objects of the invention, and other objects and purposes which will be described below, in view, the
invention consists in the construction, ar-
rangement, combination, and operation of parts hereinbelow set forth.
In the drawings, illustrative of one em bodiment of the invention, which accompany and form a part of this specification- Figure. 1 represents an elevation of a device constructed according to my invention as shown in use applied to a socket, my supplemental chain being omitted for clearness of illustration;
Figure 2 is a perspective viewof'the same; Figure 3 is a side elevation thereof; Figure 4 is a plan view of my gripping device;
Figure 5 is a view similar to Figure 1 with the supplemental chain shown; and
Figures 6, 7 and 8 are views in detail of the parts of my supporting device employed in cases where the support does not consist of a unitary or integral cast structure.
Referring more in detail to the drawings, the numeral 1 denotes one form of my electric cord protecting and supporting device as a whole or unit used in the present instance in connection with a socket 2, the said device being illustrated as of unitary or integral cast construction. My device preferably comprises three members, one, as 3, being adapted to beattached to and to encircle the socket; another member. 4 to encircle the cord 6 being constructed and arranged to have means to hold in proper position, and if desired to grip, the cord; and an intermediate member 5 to connect the said two other members and to extend over the socket. My supporting device may also be equipped with a lug 11 having an orifice- 12 for suspension.
Adjusting screws 7 may be employed to regulate the size or diameter of and to vary the tension of the member 3 and consequently the holding or gripping properties of the latter. I sometimes construct my electric cord. protecting and supporting device of separate parts suitably attached together as illustrated in Figures 5, 6, 7 and 8, the members 3' and 5' being fastened together as by rivets 10 and the members 4' and 5' being held in fixed position by suitable meansas by a grommet 11. r
In this instance the several members are first blanked out so as to lie in one plane and are afterward formed up in proper position and held together by the said rivets 10 and grommet 11 and screws 7 and 8.
The chain 9 which may depend from the ceiling or from other suitable supporting means is preferably clamped to my device and holds or sustains my electric cord protecting and supporting device in such a manner as to permit the cord 6 to have a certain slacknessor to hang in a slack condition thereby relieving the same and the binding posts of the socket, etc., from all strain, in which case the adjusting screws 8 may not necessarily holdthe gripping device 4 tightly clamped to the said chain and cord.
If desired the socket may be sustained by the chain in a fixed relation independent of any cord, or be positively supported'by'the cordralone, or by both with the same tension, at will.

1. In a device of the class described, an electric socket, flexible electric cords attached to binding posts within said socket and extending therefrom, a clamp encircling said socket, a unitary -supporting bracket attached to said clamp having a central orifice through which said cords are adapted to pass, a second clamp encircling said cords and attached to said bracket whereby strain upon said binding posts may be removed.
2. In a device of the class described, an electric socket, a chain 'for supporting the same, flexible electric cords attached to binding posts within said socket and extending therefrom, a clamp encircling said socket, a unitary U-shaped supporting bracket attached to said clamp having an orifice through which said cords are adapted to pass, a second clamp encircling said cords and attached to said bracket and means for connecting said'chain to said second bracket.
