More par-ticularly, 1ny' invention contemplates certain improvements in the type 0I" bale tie buckle for1ning the subject matter 0f Letters Patent N0. 1,192817 issued t0 R. L. Horsley 0n Jan. 25th. 1916, in whicl1 i.s shown a buckle formed 0 9 bent wire having tl1e ende forming the entering; 01 open end of the buckle bent t0 diverge oppositely from tl1e plane of the buckle and inclined towarcls the closed end oft the buckle. In tl1e praetical utilization 0f this buckle i.t haS been found that when tl1e ende 0f the buckle are drawn int0 aligznnnent under full tension 0f the band tl1e frictional engagement 01 the free ende of the buckle on the band practically disappears.
I have conceived that the holding capacity 0f tlae buckle can be materially increased i.f its free ende are made slightly longer so that in closed 0r operating position with tl1e buckle sides parallel they cannot be drawn into alignment or into the plane of the buckle bat Will overlap and thus provide divergent points er edges opposite the ce'nter 0f the band Which under tenslon Wlll become deforrned and tln1s 1 very greatly increase the binding action of. tl1e buckle on the band and its l1olding capacity.
My invention will be more clearl understood by reference to the accompanying speeification and clai1ns and t0 tl1e drawings forming part 0f this specification and in wl1ich only the preferred embodiment of 1ny invention is shown.

Inthe embodiment of 1ny invention illustrated I Sll0W a buckle for1ned 0f a single p1ece of' 1netal Wire Which is bentt0 form t-l1e closed end 1 0f the buckle, the slightly COD- vergent sides 2 and 3 ol the buekle. and the inturned ende 4 and 5, which together form what is termed tl1e open end 0f the buekle. Preferably, the ende 4 and as originally for1ned, are bent slightly towards the closed end 1 and tl1ey are also bellt to diverge oppositely fro1n the plane of tl1e buckle, as Wlll be seen 1n0-re clearly in Fig. 2. Tl1e ends 4 and 5 are 1nade Sufllcient-ly long so that, as viewed in plan (see Fig. l), they will overlap, alle overlap being greater in extent tl1an extent 0f convergence of the side Walls from parallel po-sition. Tl1is structural feature is important, because lt per1nits the buckle wl1en in service, as sl1own in Fig. 3, to have its ends 5 and 4 bent into a plane at right angles to its side Walls 3 and 2 when spread apart into parallelism, and t0 l1ave the free ende 4 and 5 drawn into position by tl1e loop of the bale band 6 until tl1ey overlap just sulficiently to prevent the1n coming into alignment. The maintaining of this overlapping of the ende, as Will be better understood by reference to Fig. 4, is important in that it defor1ns the bite of the band, causing its center to bulge 0ut and forcing the lappecl ende ol tl1e buckle to indent themselves into ehe band and tl1us to very greatly increase the buekles grip 011 tl1e bend and tl1e holding capacity of the buckle. Moreover, this deformation of the band 1nakes possible tl1e use 01: tl1e metal in tl1e band to prevent the tendency of lapped ende to pull apart and tl1e side Walls 130 spread apart. which if permitted Will destroy the buckle. The couverging side edges of the band in tl1e bite, as Will be seen very clearly in Fig. 4, Wlll actively resist any tendency 0'f the overlap ping ends 4 and 5 to pull apart and permit the Walls 2 and 3 to spread beyond parallel- Though I have clescribecl with great particularity the detail's 0f tl1e emloocliment of ehe invention herein shown, it is not to be construed that I am limitecl tl1ereto, as changes in arrangement und substitution 0f equivalents may loe macle by those skillecl in tl1e art Wihout cleparting fro1n the inventi0n as defined in alle appenclecl claims.
Having thus clescribecl 1ny invention, wl1at I claim as new ancl clesire to sacure by Letters Patent, is
