My invention relates to stop motion mechanisms for machines, especially machines having a member thereof in roller contact with the material acted upon, to automatically stop said machine after predetermined lengths of material have been run through. My invention is especially applicable to braiding machines and so far as I am aware I am the first to provide a mechanical stop motion mechanism in one for this purpose.
Most braiding machines are provided with a take up drum revolved at a reduced speed in roller contact with the braid. I provide a revolvable member revolvably actuated by the take up drum, preferably so as to have a point on its periphery moved at a much slower speed than a point on the periphery of the take up drum. I also provide a movable member movable in proximity to an actual;- ing portion of a stop motion mechanism for the machine and I provide thereon either an adjustable stop or a plurality of them. I also provide flexible means to interconnect said revolvable and movable members whereby the revolution of the revolvable member will cause a movement of the movable member until the stop thereon abuts an actuating portion of the stop motion mechanism to cause it to function. So far as I am aware a tie vice of this description is new on all kinds of machines having a member thereof in roller contact with the material acted upon. A stop motion mechanism of any suitable type may be provided for the adjustable stop to con tact to actuate.
The standard type of braiding machines now on the market are normally provided with an already existing stop motion mechanism preferably including a pivoted lever mo uible on the breaking of a thread in any one of the carriers to actuate the mechanism to stop the machine. Thus most braiding machines are already provided with the essential features of a stop motion mechanism and it is only essential for the adjustable stop on the movable member of my invention to actuate a member to move the pivoted lever to actuate the already existing stop motion mechanisi'n on predetermined ma terial length settings. It is thus obvious that I have provided a very simple device for the above purpose which can be readily attached to alreud existing types of braiding BRAIDING AND LIKE MACHINES.

Hitherto in braid shops in braiding this type of material the operative has had to watch the braid and manually stop the machine when he guessed the right amount of braided covering had been put on. This resulted in very uneven work, many seconds, much turmoil in the braid shop and greatly limited the number of machines one operative could successfully attend to. In braid shops where my invention has been installed the turmoil has largely ceased, tremendous results in increased efliciency and better and more even quality of work have been achieved and one operative is now able to manage ten machines where hitherto the most one operative could run has been about four. It is obvious that my invention may be employed to braid a great number of short lengths without resetting the mechanism but by merely increasing the number of adjustable stops on the movable member. It is obvious that the movable member can be graduated for braiding various types of fancy lengths.
These and such objects of my invention as may hereinafter appear will be best understood by a description of one embodiment thereof as is shown in the accompanying drawings applied to a standard New England Butt Co. single decker braiding machine.

In the drawings, wherein like characters of reference indicate like parts throughout, 10 generally indicates the frame of a single decker braiding machine, suitably supported by the legs 12. The braider carriers 1a revolve as usual in the sinuous crosstraeks 16 in the top plate 18 being revolved as usual by horn gears, (not shown). The braider threads 20 converge to the former where they are braided as usual, then passed around the take up drum 2%- and into the usual storage reel, (not shown). Whereas as explained, a special stop motion mechanism may be provided for my invention, I have so designed my invention that it may be readily attached to act upon the already existing type of stop motion mechanism already built on most types of braiders to stop the machine when a thread in one of the braider carriers breaks for any reason. Each braider carriers is provided with a weight 26 slidably mounted on the post 28 thereof normally held up by the thread 20 during the braiding operation and adapted to slide down the post 28 to move over the pivoted lever 30 to actuate the stop motion mechanism as the lowered weight comes adjacent to the lever 30 as the carrier winds around the sinuous crossing tracks 16 after breaking of a thread.
32 represents the main drive shaft of the braider which has mounted thereon the dr1v ing pulley 34: having on its inner face a bevel gear (not shown). Said bevel gear is adapted to mesh as usual with the bevel gear loosely mounted on the revolvable upright shaft 38. Said upright shaft 38 has keyed thereto the driving gear 40. The braiding machine is provided with the usual clutch preferably comprising a clutch fork adapted on the upward movement of the shipper handle 42 to cause the driving gear 40 to re volve with the continuously revolving bevel gear 86. The driving gear all also revolves through means not shown, the horn gears to suitably revolve the carriers l t in their sinuous tracks 16. When the shipper handle 4-2 is down, it is obvious that the braider will not run and when it is raised up it is obvious that it will run. The braiding machine is normally provided with the latch st l-having the prong 46 thereon adapted to overlap the upper edge of the pivoted lever b0. IVhen the shipper handle L2 is raised up, the prong at; normally overlaps the adjacent edge of the pivoted lever 30 to keep the clutch in engagement to drive the machine. It is obvious however, that when a fallen weight 26 on a carrier having a broken thread contacts the arm of the pivoted lever 30 that the pivoted lever will move to release the prong 4:6 to permit the latch li-it to drop and thus lower the shipper rod to release the clutch to shut off the machine.
The revolvable upright shaft 38 has the worm 50 on the upper end thereof which drives the worm gear 52 on the cross shaft 3 which has the gear 56 thereon adapted to drive the gear 58 on the cross shaft (30. The cross shaft 60 has mounted on the opposite ends thereof the gear (52 adopted through the medium of the idler 6a to drive a large gear (-36 on the take up drum 24-. lt is obvious that through the gearing just described a point on the periphery of the take up drum 24. will revolve at a slow speed corresponding to the speed at which the bra d is made. The gear 58 is normally known as the change gear and by varying the size of this gear either tight or loose braid may be braided. The change gear 58 and the gears on the revolvable upright shaft 38 and I'QVOlVtIl'JlQ cross shaft 60 are normally supported by the upright 68 which supports one end of the cross bar 70. The take up drum 24: and take up drum shaft 72 revolve in bearings T-l mounted in the ends of the forked supporting bracket. 76 suitably mounted on the cross bar 70. So much of my device is admittedly old in braiding machines and is normally provided as a part of standard equipment on a machine of single decker type.
To provide a stop motion mechanism to stop the machine after predetermined lengths of braid have been braided it is only necessary to provide the following simple parts. I preferably extend the take up drum shaft 72 as at 78 and I loosely mount thereon near the extended end 78 thereof the revolvable member 80 which in my preferred embodiment comprises a revolvable spool. I pivot on one side of said spool 80 the pawl 82 and I key to the extension 78 of said take up drum shaft 72 preferably in'nncdiately underneath said pawl 82 the ratchet 84:. To insure that the pawl 82 will normally stay in contact with said ratchet I provide the spring 86. I also preferaljily provide the pawl 82 with the projecting arm 88 and I pivotally secure to the side of said spool 80 above said projecting arm 88 the screw 90 having the cam 92 on the inner end contact with the ratchet 84 as desired to permit free movement of the spool 011 the shaft 7 2. Though I preferably provide the spool 80 mounted on the take up drum shaft it is obvious that any suitable revolvable member actuated by the takeup drum shaft or any other member in roller contact with the material acted upon may be provided. As will be apparent, to reduce the speed of the revolvable member I normally construct the spool 80 of a much less diame ter than that of the take up drum.
As stated I provide a movable member 100 having either one stop 102 or a plurality of stops 102 adjustable thereon. In the embodiment shown I have made the stops 102 adjustable by providing the adjustable set screws 103 adapted to register in threaded holes in the adjustable stops 102 to have the ends thereof contact the movable member 100. It is obvious that by unscrewing the set screws and moving the stops 102 up and down on the movable member 100 they may be set in any desired position thereon. As also stated said member 100may be graduated if desired. The adjustable stops on said movable member are adapted to contact the actuating portion of any suitable stop motion mechanism to stop the machin at predetermined settings.
To convert the revolvable motion of the revolvable spool 80 to cause the movable member 100 to move in one plane I preferably provide flexible means to interconnect said members. In my preferred embodiment said flexible interconnecting means preferably comprises a non-stretchable cord 106 having one end thereof firmly secured to a point on the periphery of the spool 80 and in my preferred embodiment to change the direct-ion of motion passing over the pulley 108 and havu'ig its opposite end attached to the movable member in my preferred embodiment preferably to the upperend of the vertically movable rod 100. It is obvious that this cord if desired may consistof a liner portion for winding on the spool and a heavier portion for actuating the movable rod 100.
I also provide means actuated by the stop or stops 102 on the movable member 100 to actuate the stop motion mechanism, thus in my preferred eu'ibodiment to move the pivoted lever 30 of the already existing stop motion mechanism to release the prong 46 of the latch 44 to cause the clutch to be dis engaged. In my preferred embodiment as shown in Figs. 2 and 3 I mount the supporting bracket arm 110 on the cross bar 70. Sold bracket arm is provided with the upstanding end 112 having the bolt holes 114 therein. I mount on said bracket the vertically movable yoke 116. Said yoke 116 has a portion 118 adapted to contact the outer face of the arm 112 of the bracket 110 and is provided with the vertical slots 120 therein. The bolts 122 project through the said vertical slots 120 in the depending arm 1180f the yoke 116 and through the bolt holes 114 of the upstanding arm 112 of the bracket 110 and slidably secure said portions together, the heads 124 of said bolts straddling the slots 120 and being secured to the arm 112 by the nuts 126. The upper portion of the yoke 116 preferably comprises the horizontally disposed arm 128 terminating in the forkedyoke ends 130 adapted to straddle the vertically movable rod 100 and to contact the adjustable stops thereon. It is thus obvious that the yoke 116 is slidably mounted on the bracket 110 to permit up and down movement thereon. The lever 134 is suitably pivoted on the bracket 136 at tached to the bottom plate of the braider.
A flexible cord 138 connects the lower end 140 of the yoke 116 with the power arm 142 of the lever 134. The work arm 144 of the lever 134 terminates in a point adapted to register in a slot 146 in the bent power arm 148 of the bent lever 150 suitably pivoted by the pin 152 to the bracket 154 suitably mounted on the latch guide bolt 156. The work arm 158 of the bent lever 150, which thus pivots in a substantially vertical plane is adapted to contact the pivoted lever 30 on upward movement of the yoke 116, thereby releasing the latch 44 to cause the stop motion mechanism to shut off the machine.-
The operation of my invention is obvious from the above description. In the usual operation of the machine the take up drum shaft 7 2 will be revolved, and as the pawl 82 is in mesh with the ratchet 84 on said shaft 72 the spool 80 will be revolved. This will cause the flexible cord 106 to be wound up on the spool 80 thus raising'the movable member 100 until the stop 102 set at a predetermined point thereon contacts the arms 130 of the yoke 116 to raise up the yoke 130 and through the medium of the flexible cord 138 the power arm 142 of the lever 134 thus lowering the work arm 144 thereof thus lowering the power arm 148 of the bent lever 150 and causing the work arm 158 thereof to push the pivoted lever 30 inwards to release the latch 44 to cause the already existing stop motion mechanism to operate to stop the machine. The movable member 100 may only be provided with one stop. It may however be provided with a plurality of stops set at predetermined points thereon. As the diameter of the wound cord 106 on the spool varies it is essential to set these stops for predetermined lengths on one sample run of the machine.
As explained, my invention is peculiarly adapted for braiding fancy cords especially oi the type where it is desired to stop the machine quite often to perform some manual operation on tlv'e braid. A plurality of stops 10:2 may be thus set on the movable member 100 to cause the machine to stop to braid continuously a nmnber of connected small lengths of braid, the number of separate lengths corresponding to the number of stops on the movable member. Thus after one short length has been braided and the desired manual operation performed it is merely necessary to start the machine again to braid a correspondingly short length bciore performing another manual operation on the braid and after a number of the lengths corresponding to the number of stops 102 on the movable member have been b'aided,' the movable member 100 may be lowered to begin again by turning the thumb screw 90 to raise up the pawl 80 out of contact with the ratchet 81 C to permit the rod 100 by gravity to unwind the cord 106 wound on the spool 80.
In Fig. 5 I have shown a radio or telephone head set which may be convci'iiently braided on my machine. Said head set normally has two braided terminals at each end, one for each car. A braided cord 160 is inserted in the machine and the machine is started at the point A to braid an extra covering 162 on this. A stop 102 on the movable member is set to stop the machine at the point B. After the machine is automatically stopped at the point B the operative takes another braided cord 164; of a desired length and inserts it adjacent to the braided cord 160 below the covered portion 162 and from then on downwards covers both cords 160 and 16 1 with the single covering 166. A second adjustable stop 102 may then be set to stop the braiding machine at the point C at which point the downwardly projecting end 168 of the second cord 164 is bent upwards and the braiding continued to the point D, the distance between the points C and D being double the desired length ot the lower terminal 169 of the first cord 160, the cord 160 alone being covered from the points C and D with the extra covering 162. At the point D a second cord 16 1- may be again inserted by the operative, the machine run to the point E the end 168 being again bent up and the cord 160 being again covered down to the stopping point F. Thus in one complete movement of the movable rod 100 two telephone head sets may be braided. The cord 160 may be cut midway between the points C and D to separate the sets. It is thus obvious that having provided the movable member 100 with five stops the stopping points may be adjustably set so that it may braid two complete head sets, the machine automatically stopping at the exact desired points without the necessity of the operative continuously watching it and manually stop-- ping it.
In Fig. 6 I have shown a fancy braid which is especially adapted for use as a Wire for small electric lights for Christmas trees. The wire 170 suitably covered with one layer of braid is put in the machine and the extra covering 172 put on. An adjustable stop 102 is set to stop the machine at the point A. At the point Athe operative takes the braided cord 170 forms it into a loop 17 t and bends it up so as not to interfere with the braiding operation and again starts the machine. Further adjustable stops 102 are insorted on the movable member 100 to stop the machine at the points 13, C, D, E and F respectively where this set of operations is repeated. The finished cord thus comprises a wire having the braided covering 170 thereon, a series of loops 17% ot the wire and a continuous extra braided covering 172 all the way down the wire. lVhen the braid is removed from the machine the loops 17% may be cut as shown at 17 6 to provide the two terminals for each electric candle. In similar fashion many other types of braided wire or braided cords for any kind or anylength of radio telephone or other braided wire cords or any kind of a fancy braid be fabricated.
It is understood that my invention is not limited to the specific embodin'ient shown and that various deviations may be made therefrom without departing from the spirit and scope of the appended claims.
What I claim as new and desire to secure as Letters Patent is:
1. In a machine having a member thereof in roller contact with the material acted upon and a stop motion mechanism, the combination of a revolvable member actuated by said roller cont-act member, a member having a plurality of adjustable stops thereon vertically movable in proximity to the actuating portion of said stop motion mechanism and a flexible cord interconnecting said revolvable and movable members whereby on setting oi the adjustable stops at predetermined points on said movable member they may contact the actuating portion of the stop motion mechanism to successively stop the machine at desired predetermined material length settings.
2. In a machine having a member thereof in roller contact with the material acted upon and a stop motion mechanism, the combination of a revolvable member actuated by said roller contact member, a member having an adjustable stop thereon movable in proximity to the actuating portion of said stop motion mechanisn'i, and flexible means interconnecting said revolvable and movable members whereby on setting of the adjustable stop at predetermined points on said movable member it may contact the actuating portion of the stop motion mechanism to stop the machine at predetermined material length settings and means to reset the revolvable and movable members for a further run of a predetermined length without revolution of the roller contact member.
3. In a machine having a member thereof in roller contact with the material acted upon and a stop motion mechanism, the combination of a revolvable member actuated by said roller contact member, a member having a plurality of adjustable stops thereon vertically movable in proximity to the actuating portion of said stop motion mechanism and a flexible cord interconnecting said revolvable and movable members whereby on setting of the adjustable stops at predetermined points on said movable member they. may contact the actuating portion of the stop motion mechanism to successively stop the machine at desired predetermined material length settings and means to reset the revolvable and movable members for a further run of predetermined lengths without revolution of the roller contact member.
4. In a braiding machine, the combination of a revolvable member actuated by the a take up drum shaft, a stop motion mechanism, a member having a plurality of adjustable stops thereon vertically movable in proximity to the actuating portion of said stop motion mechanism and a flexible cord interconnecting said revolvable and movable members whereby on setting of the adjustable stops at predetermined points on said movable member they may contact the actuating portion of said stop motion mecha- 1 nism to successively stop the braiding ma chine at desired predetermined braid length settings.
5. In a braiding machine the combination of a revolvable member actuated by the take up drum shaft, a stop motion mechanism, a member having an adjustable stop thereon movable in proximity to the actuating portion of said stop motion mechanism and flexiblemeans interconnecting said revolvable and movable members whereby on setting of the adjustable stop at predetermined points on said movable member it may contact the actuating portion of said stop motion mechanism to stop the braiding machine at predetermined braid length settings, and means to reset the revolvable and movable members for another run of predetermined length without revolution of the take up drum.
6. In a braiding machine, the combina tion of a revolvable member actuated by the. take up drum shaft, a stop motion mechanism, a member having aplurality of adjustable stops thereon vertically movable n proximity to the actuating portion of said stop motion mechanism and a flexible cord interconnecting said revolvable and movable members whereby on setting of the adjustable stops at predetermined points'on said movable member they may contact the actuating portion of said stop motion mechanism to successively stop the braiding machine at desired predetermined braid length settings, and means to reset the revolvable and movable members for another run of predetermined lengths without revolution of the take up drum.
7. In a braiding machine,the combination of a revolvable spool loosely mounted on an extension of the take up drum shaft of much less diameter than the diameter of said take up drum having a pawl pivoted on a side thereof, a ratchet keyed to said shaft underneath said pawl, a stop motion mechanism, a' member having an adjustable stop thereon movable in proximity to the actuating portion of said stop motion mechanism and a' flexible cord interconnecting said spool and movable member whereby on setting of the adjustable stop at predetermined points on said movable member it may contact the actuating portion of said stop motion mechanism to stop the braiding machine at predetermined braid length settings and whereby the spool and movable member may be reset without revolution of the take up drum shaft.
8. In a braiding machine, the combination of a revolvable member actuated by the take up drum shaft, a stop motion mecha nism including a pivoted lever movable on the breaking of a thread to actuate the mechanism to stop the machine, a movable member having an adjustable stop thereon, flexible means interconnecting said movable and revolvable members and means contacted by the stop on the movable member to move the pivoted lever to actuate the stop motion mechanism on predetermined braid length settings.
9. In a braiding machine, the combination of a revolvable member actuated by the take up drum shaft, a stop motion mechanism including a pivoted lever movable on the breaking of a thread to actuate the mechanism to stop the machine, a vertically movable member having a plurality of adjustable stops thereon, aflexible cord interconnecting said movable and revolvable members and means contacted by the stops on the movable member to move the pivoted lever to successively actuate the stop motion mechanism on desired predetermined braid length settings.
10. In a braiding machine, the combination of a revolvable member actuated by the take up drum shaft, a stop motion mechanism including a pivoted lever movable on the breaking of a thread to actuate the mechanism to stop the machine, a vertically movable member having an adjustable stop thereon, a flexible cord interconnecting said movable and revolvable members and means contacted by the stop on the movable mem her to move the pivoted lever to actuate the stop motion mechanism on desired predetermined braid length settings and means to reset the revolvable and movable members for a further run of a predetermined length Without revolution of the take up drum.
11. In a braiding machine, the combination of a revolvable member actuated by the take up drum shaft, a stop motion mechanism including a pivoted lever movable on the breaking of a thread to actuate the mechanism to stop the machine, a vertically movable member having a plurality of adjustable stops thereon, a flexible cord interconnecting said movable and revolvable members and means contacted by the stops revolution of the take up drum.
12. In a braiding machine, the combination of a revolvable member loosely mounted on the extension of the take up drum shaft of much less diameter of said take up drum having a pawl pivoted on a side thereof, a ratchet keyed to said shaft underneath said pawl, a stop motion mechanism including a pivoted lever movable on the breaking of a thread to actuate the mechanism to stop the machine, a movable member having an adjustable stop thereon, flexible means interconnecting said movable member and revolvable member, a movable yoke straddling the movable member and means actuated by said movable yoke to move the pivoted lever to actuate the stop motion mechanism on contact of said adjustable stop With said yoke at predetermined settings of said stop.
18. In a braiding machine, the combination of a revolvable spool loosely mounted on an extension of the take up drum shaft of much less diameter than the diameter of said drum having a pawl pivot-ed on a side thereof, a ratchet keyed to said shaft underneath said pawl, a stop motion mechanism including a pivoted lever movable on the breaking of a thread to actuate the mechanism to stop the machine, a vertically movable member having a plurality of adjustable stops thereon, a flexible cord interconnecting said movable member and spool, a vertically movable yoke straddling the movable member and means actuated by said movable yoke to move the pivoted lever to successively actuate the stop motion mechanism on contact of said adjustable stops with said yoke at predetermined settings of said stops. 1
14. In a machine having a member thereof in roller contact with the material acted upon and a stop motion mechanism, the combination of a revolvable member actuated by said roller contact member and means actuated by said revolvable member having a plurality of adjustable stops thereon movable in proximity to the actuating portion of said stop motion mechanism whereby on setting of the adjustable stops at predetermined points on said means they may contact the actuating portion of the stop motion mechanism to successively stop the machine at desired predetermined material length settings.
15. In a machine having a member thereof in roller contact With the material acted upon and a stop motion mechanism, the combination of a revolvable member actuated by said roller contact member and means actm ated by said revolvable member having an adjust-able stop thereon movable in proximity to the actuating portion of said stop motion mechanism whereby on the setting of the adjustable stop at predetermined points on said means it may contact the actuating portion of the stop motion mechanism to stop the machine at. predetermined material length settings and means to reset the revolv; able member and said means actuated thereby for a further run of a predetermined length Without revolution of the roller contact member.
16. In a machine having a member thereof in roller contact with the material acted upon and a stop motion mechanism, the combination of a revolvable member actuated by said roller contact member and means actuated by said revolvable member having a plurality of adjustable stops thereon movable in proximity to the actuating portion of said stop motion mechanism whereby on setting of the adjustable stops at predetermined points on said means they may contact the actuating portion of the stop motion mechanism to successively stop the machine at desired predetermined length settings and means to reset the revolvable member and said means actuated thereby for further runs of predetermined lengths with out revolution of the roller contact member.
17. In a braiding machine, the combination of a revolvable member actuated by the take up drum shaft, a stop motion mech anism and means actuated by said revolvable member having a plurality of adjustable take up drum shaft, a stop motion mechanism, and means actuated by said revolvable member having an adjustable stop thereon movable in proximity to the actuating portion of said stop motion mechanism Whereby on setting of the adjustable stop at predetermined points on said means it may contact the actuating portion of the stop motion mechanism to stop the machine at predetermined braid length settings and means to reset the revolvable member and said means for another run of a predetermined length Without revolution of the take up drum.
19. In a braiding machine, the combina tion of a revolvable member actuated by the take up drum shaft, a stop motion mechanism and means actuated by said revolvable member having a plurality of adjustable stops thereon movable in proximity to the actuating portion of said stop motion mechanism whereby on setting of the adjustable stops at predetermined points on said means they may contact the actuating portion of said stop motion mechanism to successively stop the braiding machine at desired oredetel-mined braid length settings, and means to reset the revolvable member and said means for another run of predetermined lengths Without revolution of the take up drum.
20. In a braiding machine, the combination of a revolvable member actuated by the take up drum shaft, a stop motion mechanism including a pivoted lever movable on the breaking of a thread to actuate the mechanism to stop the machine, means actuated by said revolvable member having an adj ustable stop thereon and means contacted by the stop on said means to move the pivoted lever to actuate the stop motion mechanism on predetermined braid length settings.
21. In a braiding machine, the combination of a revolvable member actuated by the take up drum shaft, a stop motion mechanism including a pivoted lever movable on the breaking of a thread to actuate the mechanism to stop the machine, means actuated by said revolvable member havin a pluralitv of adjustable stops thereon and means contacted by the stops on the movable memher to move the lever to successively actuate the stop motion mechanism on desired predetermined braid length settings.
22. In a braiding machine, the combination of a-revolvable member actuated by the take up drum shaft, a stop motion mechanism including a pivoted lever movable on the breaking 01 a thread toactuate the mechanism to stop the machine, means actuated by said revolvable member having an adjustable stop thereon and means contacted by the stop on said means to move the pivoted lever to actuate the stop motion mechanism on predetermined braid length settings, and means to reset the revolvable member and said stop bearing means for a further run of a predetermined len th Without revolution of the take up drum.
23. In a braiding machine, the combina tion of a revolvable member actuated by the take up drum shaft, a stop motion mechanism including a pivoted lever movable on the breaking of a thread to actuate the mechanism to stop the machine, means actuated by said revolvable member having a plural ity of adjustable stops thereon and means contacted by the stops on said means to move the lever to successively actuate the stop motion mechanism on desired predetermined braid length settings, and means to reset the revolvable member and said stop bearing means for further runs of predetermined lengths Without revolution of the take up drum.
