MECHANICAL FACE WITH MOVABLE FEATURES.

My invention is a mechanical face with movable features, and is adapt-ed to be used for the heads of dolls, adult heads, heads of animals, and the like, for toys. Said invention may also be used for advertising purposes, in show windows, or made of large "size for use in connection with large illuminated signs. It may also be used on post cards for dinner favors and for campaign buttons to be placed in the lapel of a coat. Various other specific uses will appear as the description thereof proceeds.

It is an'object of my invention to provide two or more relatively movable members, which members are adapted to form the head of a mechanical face, said members being adapted, when moved, to coa'ct so that said face ma bemade to form a succession ofex- 'pressions or aspects. It is also an object of my invention to form a mechanical face with movable features in which the various parts of said face may be moved to form a variety of expressions.

A still further object of 'my invention is to provide two or more relatively movable members, which members are adapted to be oscillated or reciprocated, whereby a mechanical face may be made to form a succession of expressions.

It'is also anobject of my invtntion'to provide one or more members adaptedto form a mechanical face with movable features, one or more of said members, or one member "alone, being adapted to form the eyes, teeth, and lower lip of said face, while the remaining parts or portions are adapted-to form'the upper eye lashes, eye-lids and the remaining port-ions of said face.

=It'is moreover an object ofmyinvention to form two or more members with the features of a human or animal face, one of said 'members being provided with "an extension that} is adapted 'to be inserted into or be interconnected with another of said members, whereby, when said extension is actuated,

said members may bemade to coact sothat said face may assume different aspects.

It is also an object of my invention to pro vide a mechanical face with movable features "comprising two or more members, which members maybe interlocked.

Describing the device more in detail, two

blank *B and B are PIOVldQCl, as shown in Figs. 1. and 2,whichblanks are stamped out of sheet material, such, for example, as car-dboard or sheet metal, althoughany suitable material whatever may be used, "if desired. Figs. 11 and l2-show the blanks formed .to indicatean animal, while Figs. #1 and 2-show a doll.

The blank B is provided withslots 4, for a purpose that will presently appear. The

'holes 8-ar'e cut or stamped-out of the blank *B, which, when ornamented as shown in" Figs. 5 and -7, P represent. tlie= configuration of the' eyes, in which the-eye balls are adapted to "move.

Slots or perforations 1 and 2 are cut or stam ped from t'he blank, which "slots or perforations are adapted-to receive the tongue or "extension T of' theblank B.

The blank =13, shown in Fig. I 2, is also st-amped orcut out of sheetgmaterial in the form-shown, the dotted line L indicating the line upon blank is adapted to Cit folded. The lower portion of said blank is adapted to be ornamented to form the head, upper portions of the face, upper eyelashes, eye lids, eye brows and the frontal configuration of the nose N.

When assembled, the blanks have the appearance of the device as shown in Figs. 3 and 4C, the tongue or extension T being inserted through the slot 1, across the portion 6, and down through the slot 2. Fig. 3 shows the front view of the device thus assembled, and Fig. t the rear view thereof. For the purpose of locking the two elements or members of my device in position, slots at are cut or stamped out of the blank B, and projections 5 are stamped or cut-out of the blank B, said projections 5 being adapted to enter said slots 4, thereby forming a means for securely locking said members in position, and at the same time permitting said members to be moved relatively.

It will be noted in Fig. 5 that the blank B may be ornamented as shown to form the body of the doll, that portion forming the head and face being ornamented to form the lower portion of the face of said doll, including the lower lashes of the eyes, the upper lip, and chin, both upper and lower eyelashes appearing on said figure.

Fig. 6 shows how the blank B may be ornamented to form the upper portion of the head and face of the doll, said figure showing the upper eyelashes, eye-lids, and frontal outline of the nose, the lower lip and teeth also being shown. Said blank, when thus ornamented and folded on the dotted line L, is adapted to be folded over the head or the face of the blank shown in Fig. 5. Said blank B is also ornamented to form the eyeballs of the doll.

As shown in Fig. 7, when the device is assembled, the extension T may be manipulated so that a solemn expression may be formed on the face, the eyes being fully open. Fig. 8 shows a laughing expression or aspect, with the eyes closed. F ig. 9 shows the eyes half closed, the face forming a smile, while Fig. 10 shows a face in such a position as to indicate a wink.

In Fig. 11 a blank is shown ornamented to form an animal, the slots 1 and 2 being used to permit the tongue or extension T to enter the same and pass over the portion 6. The locking members 5 are adapted to enter slots 4, whereby the two members n'iay be locked in position, but at the same time said members are permitted to be relatively moved. The holes 3 are used precisely as the holes 3 described in connection with Figs. 1 and 5.

1n operation, the device being assembled as shown in Fig. 7, either of said members may be moved so that the face will form a succession of expressions or aspects. The extension or tongue T may be oscillated .or

reciprocated, or the other member may be likewise oscillated or reciprocated, many different expressions or aspects being formed as desired.

It is within the province of my invention to provide an automatic means, such asa motor, for operating either or both of said members, whereby said face may automatically be made to form a. variety of expressions. If desired, said face may be illuminated to form a sign for advertising purposes. It is also clear that I do not desire inyself to be limited to a doll or an animal, as shown in the drawings, nor do I purpose to be limited to the exact configuration and ornamentation shown and described. It is also clear that my device may be modified throughout a wide range, and I do not purpose to be limited to the exact details of construction shown and described.

I claim as my invention:

1.111 combination, a mechanical face with movable features for dolls and the like formed of two members adapted for relative movement, one of said members being cut to form the front head portion and a depending tongue portion, the frontal outlines of said head, the upper eye lashes, eye lids, nose, said other member being cut to form the frontal outlinesof said head, a portion of the face, both lower and upper eye lashes, and further out to form two slots immediately below the upper lip, one under the other, said frontal portion of said first member being adapted to be superimposed upon said second member, and the tongue portion inserted through the upper slot from the rear and projected downward through the lower slot, and means on said members enabling said face to form a succession of expressions when said members are moved relatively to each other.

3. A face with mechanically movable features comprising in combination a pair of relatively movable members having depicted thereon the features of a face, one of said members having a top portion superposed over the other of said members, certain portions of one of said members overlapping, interlapping, and always lying in flat relation with the other, said member having a restricted moveinent in all directions relative to the other of said members, means associated with both of said members for moving them relatively, said superposed portion coacting with certain visible portions on said first member to cover and uncover certain of said features, and means associated with the outermost sides of each of said members for restricting the movement of said members.

In a device of the class described, two relatively movable blanks fashioned out of sheet material, one of said blanks being so cut-out and cut-away as to form the rear outlines of the head of an animal, and also to form the frontal outlines and upper portion of the face and head of said animal, said blank on both portions having depicted thereon features of said animal the other blank being fashioned to form the remaining portions and features of said face and head as well as the openings through which the features on said first blank are visible, that portion of said first blank forming the frontal outlines and upper portion of the face and head being adapt-ed to be bent downwardly and superimposed on said other blank, said blanks when assembled being adapted to coact to cover and uncover certain parts thereof, so that said face may be caused to form a variety of expressions.

5. A device for producing a sequence of expressions comprising two members operatively connected for relative reciprocating and oscillating movement, one of said members having a folded over portion and said second member being inserted thereunder and partially covered thereby, means on each of said members coacting when said members are reciprocated to produce a succession of different expressions and when oscillated to produce additional expressions.
