Description

U STATES 'r smeh EZBA C. CARLETON OF PORT HURON, MIOHIGAN.
IMPROVEMENT IN SECURING HANDLES TO CUTLERV.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 161.752, datecl April 6, 1875; application filed March 6, 1875. l
To all whom it 'may concern:
Be it known that I EZRA C. CARLETON, of Port Huron, in the county of St. Glair and State of Michigan, have invented a Device or Means for Securig Handles to Cutlery and Tan ged Tools, of which the following is a specification:
The nature of my invention relates to an improvement in the means of securing the handles to the tangs of table-cutlery and all tanged tools in such a manner as to permit of their easy detachment.
The invention consists in a slotted key pivoted in a mortise at the-'extremity of the tang, in combination With a transverse keywayin the end of the handle.
Figure l is a perspective View of a tableknife itted With my improved detachable handle. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal Vertical section of the handle at x w in Fig. 3, which is a longtudinal transverse section at y y in Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a similar section to Fig. 2, but showin g the handle partly withdrawn from the tang. Fig. 5 is a perspective View of the tang and key.
In the drawing, A represeits the tang ofa. case-knife, and B a handle of Wood, ivory, hard rubber, or other material fitted to the same but in such a Way that it can be easily Withdrawn. C is a key having a slot, a, extendig fron its middle nearly to the point thereof, and
is secured in a mortise at the end of the tang by a transve'se pin, b. A keyway, c, is cut in the end of the haidle.
To secure the handle on the tan g, eXtend the key so as to bring it in line With the tang. Insert the tang in the handle. Then throw over the key, so as to lie in the deepest end of the keyway, and push it home. The reverse of this movement enables the handle to be removed from the tang.
Handles of ivory and other material liable to damage from immersion in hot Water can thus be removed, While the knives or tools to which they belong can be Washed or cleased Without damage.
It will also he noticed that there are no rivets through the handles to mar or deti-act from their appearance, or to cause them to split.
This improvement is applicable to all tools having tangs, as Well as to cutlery or table- Ware.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The slotted key G, Secured to the mortised tang A for detachably fastening the handle B thereon, substantially as described.
EZRA C. GARLETON.
