CLOSURE SEAT FOR METALLIC CONTAINERS.
vApplication filed December 22, 1924. Serial Ho 757,897.
gaging and securing the closure seat with the sheet metal material of the barrel head.
A further object of the invention is, in
providing improved means in a closure seat for a metallic container, whereby a double lock seam or joint is provided for securing the closure seat to the container.-
Other and further objects will appear in the specification and be specifically pointed. out in the appended claims, reference being had to the accompanyingdrawings exemplifying the invention, and in which,
Fig. 1 is a vertical transverse section taken through a portion of a sheet metal barrel head, showing the improved closure seat se-' cured thereto. Fig. 2 is a fragmentary plan view of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a vertical transverse section taken through the closure seat showing the 'foldable portions in extended positions be fore the swedging or pressing. operation. a
- Fig. 4 is a vertical transverse section taken through the closure seat showing it mounted in a reverse position in the barrel head.
With reference to the accompanying drawings 1 designates a portion'of a sheet metal barrel head which is provided with a circular opening for the reception. of the closure seat 2, said seat being comprised ofan'annular body portion 3 having a centrally arranged threaded opening 4 and arranged around said opening is an annular flange 5 which extends vertically beforethe'pressing operation is' carried on for the securing of the closure seat 2 to the barrel head 1.
Extending upwardly from the outer edge of the body portion 3 is a plurality of vertically extending lips 6, said lips being shorter in length than. is the flange 5 and are arranged a distance away from said flange so as to provide an annular groove 7.
gaged inwardly In the operation of securing the closure seat to the barrelhead, the edge of the material surrounding the circular opening in which the closure seat is to be mounted is bent downwardly as-designated at 8 in Fig. 3 wherein the depending edge 8 will be enof the lips 6 and within the groove 7.
After the mounting of tion'8 of the barrel head 1 into the groove 7, the lips 8 are then folded inwardly and downwardly in which operation said lips will carry the dependingportion 8 therethe depending porwith, thereby. firmly pressing the portion 8 against the bottom 9 of the groove 7. The folding operation of the lips 6 upon the .por-
tion 8 of the "barrel head 1, will draw an an-,
nular portion 10 of the barrel head upon the lips 6 as shown in Fig. 1 thereby providing a base against whichthe vertically extending flange 5 is forced by the operation of an outwardly swedging or pressing tool, the extending edge of the flange 5 being then disposed horizontally as shown at 5 in Fig. 1. The material surrounding the base or portion 10 of the barrel head is then pressed annularly around the outer vertical edge 11 of the body portion,3 as designated at 12,
thereby permitting the barrel head proper to be extended horizontally from the body portion 3 ina manner wherein the inner periphery of the barrel head will be approximately flush with the lower surface of'the body portion 3. The flush relation of the barrel head with the lower surface of the body portion 3 provides for the entire contents of the barrel to be completely drained. From the disclosure of this improved closure seat and the manner of'mounting operation thereof, it is obvious that a very secure and tight joint is provided between the surrounding material" of the barrel head and the closure seat,
as the seam or joint/provided is obviously a I double lock seam or joint.
in some instances it may be desired to secure this improved form of closure seat to the barrel head above the top surface of the barrel headQand to accomplish this purpose, the closure seat can be reversedfrom the position disclosed in Fig. 1 to that disclosed in Fig.4 and in this instance the surrounding material of the barrel head need not be pressed around the outer vertical edge of the body portion 3, the material of the barrel hea after being securedto the body portion -3 being extended, horizontally in a direct manner from its place of connection with the body portion.
For providing an identifying tag securing means to the barrel a relatively flat apertured strip of material 13 is engagedagainst the outer periphery of the flange 5 before the folding operation of said flange, the outapron in place.
What I claim is: 1. A sheet metal container having an aperture formed in one of its walls, an interiorly threaded body portion located in the aperture of said container wall, said body portion wardly folding of said flange securing the having an outwardly'bendable projecting .ing portion adapted to and over-lap a portion of the materia sur= rounding said aperture and force the surrounding material in said groove, saidother projectl'ng portion adapted to be forced downwardly 1n over-lapping relation to said other projecti-n 'p rtion and the material engaged by said other portion.
3. A closure seat for a container having an opening formed therein, comprising a \body portionhaving a reduced extension,a second extension arranged outwardly of said other extension, said. reducedextension adapted to be engaged in the opening of the container,
said second extension adapted to over-lap a portion of the material surrounding said opening, said reduced extension adapted to over-lap saidsecond extension.
be engaged a ainst 4. The combination of a metal barrel head having an opening formed therein, a body portion having a reduced cylindrical extension and an outwardly arranged extension, said reduced extension being mounted in said opening, the edge of thematerial surrounding said opening being engaged and over-lapped by'said outer extension when said outer extension isfbended thereovei,
said reduced extension when forced down-' wardly adapted to over-lap a portion of said barrel head and said outwardly arranged extension.
5. A sheet metal container having an aper ture formed in one of the walls thereof, an
interiorly threaded body portion located in said aperture, said body portion having an outwardly bendable annular projecting portion and an inwardly bendable projecting portion for co-operation with the material surrounding said aperture for securing said body portion in the. aperture of the wall, said inwardly bendable portion adapted to said aperture and bent'so as to fold the surrounding material therewith, said annular I projecting dportion' adapted to be forced'outwardly an in overrlapping relation to said other projecting portion and the material folded thereby. 6. A closure seat for a metallic container comprising an interiorly threaded body .portion haiing an inwardly arranged projecting annular flange and a series of projecting lips surrounding said flange at a distance them- -from, one of the walls of said container having an aperture formed therein, said flange adaptedto be projected through said aperture, said lips adapted to engage with the material surrounding said aperture and bended so as to over-lap said surrounding material, said flange adapted tobe pressed be engaged with the material surrounding outwardly in over-lapping relation to said lips and the material folded thereby, a por-' tion of the wall of said container'beingpressed annularly around the outside edge of said body portion; v
