UNITED STATES FRIEDRICH WOLFE, OF BERLIN, GERMANY.
SAFETY DEVICE FOR GAS AND'AIR MIXING PLANTS.
Application filed ma 21, 1925, Serial No. 31,978, and. in Germany may 10, 1924.
This invention relates to safety device for gas and air mixing plants.
Regulating devices for gas and airhave already been proposed in which a thermocouple is provided which projects into the cone of the flame of a Bunsen burner 1n order to regulate the area of the gas and air feed so as to compensate for varia: tions in the composition of the mixture. With such means of regulation, however, it is possible that sudden variations may occur in thecomposition of the mixture, for instance owing to the partial or complete failure of the gas or air supply.
The present invention has for its object a safety device which'so operates that if a sudden alteration takes 'place in the proportion of the mixture which is beyond the limits of control of the regulator, the gas and air supply is automatically cut off.
The invention consists essentially in the employment of a body that will burn, fuse or explode at a certain fairly low temperature, for example 100 (1., which body is arranged in the inner flame cone of a test burner fed by the gas mixture and on the destruction of this body a rod is released by which the fuel mixture of air and gas is cut off. I
An example of the invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which Fig. 1 is a sectional view of the burner, and Fig. 2 is a diagrammatic section of the plant associated with the burner.
The test burner consists of a Bunsen burner 1, which is fed with a fuel mixture of air and gas from the main conduit 12 by a branch pipe 2, which leads from the main conduit and is connected to the nozzle 2. Passing through the centre of this burner is a guide 3 in which is slidably arranged a rod 4. To the end of this rod a closing rod for cutting off the flow of an air and gas mixture is attached. 7
At the upper end of the rod 4 is a mass or body 5 which consistsof a substance havsition of the mixture occur the cone or core of the flame will change so that the tempera-' ture will increase thus causing-the body 5 to fuse, burn or explode. The rod 4 is thus released and actuates the closing rod by the aid of a spring or the like.
In Fig. 2 of the drawing, 10 indicates a compressor for the gas and 11 a com ressor for the air; 12 is a mixing apparatus or gas and air in which the gas and air are combined.' Thismixture of gas and air flows from the plant 12 into a distributor conduit leading to the various places of consumption. In this distributor conduit there is inserted a rapid closure valve maintained in open position by means of the lever which is connected with the actuating bar 4 of the 'pilot burner by a suitable assembly of elements (as for instance bell crank 4*). Whenever the I wrong proportion of mixture is formed the fuse at the pilot burner will burn through, the actuating bar 4 will drop and the lever 4 will rock, so that the valve plate,
of the rapid closure valve 13 also drops and thereby shuts off the continuedfiow of the gas and air mixture.
Claims:
1. A safety device for gas and air mixing plants including a main conduit, and comprising a test burner, a branch pipe connecting said burner to said main conduit, a member movable to close the gas and air supply from said gas and air mixing plant, a body holding said member in its inoperative position. said body being destructible at a comparatively low temperature and being arranged in the minimum heated core of the flame of the burner which is normally at a temperature less than that at which the body is destructible.
2. A safety device for gas and air mixing plants including a main conduit, and comprising atest burner, a branch pipe connecting said burner to said main conduit, a guide in said burner,.a rod in said guide, a body supporting 'said rod, a connection between said rod and means controlling the gas and air supply, said body being arranged in the minimum heated core of the flame of the burner which is normally at a temperature leis than thatat which the body is destructi le. In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand.
FRIEDRICH WOLFF.
