I above stated, operates entirely independently of the en ineers control of the slide valve cylinder and air brakes.
"Referring more in detail to the accompanying drawings, and particularly to Figs.

The rear end of the electric control cylinder has a pipeline 41 tapped therein, the pipe 41 being provided with a check valve 42 and continuing for attachment to the three-wayvalve casing 37 to discharge through the single outlet pipe line 38, air passage through the rear end of the electric control cylinder being normally shut off-by the pistonQ33'v positioned adjacent the rear end as illus trated in Fig. 3. 1
The steam pipe connections extending between the inanipulating cylind r :8 and the exterior steam pipe casting 19 are disposed beneath the boiler body 10 between the cylinders and the saddle 12 as shown in and includes a, vertically disposed pipe section extending from the steam pipe 19 with a forwardly directed tions 44 carrying an upwardly directed in termediately positioned branch pipe 45 having a manually operable valve 46 therein while the upper end of the branch extension 45 communicates with the rear end of the manipulating cylinder 28 atthe inner side thereof as indicated at 47. Theforward section 44 coupled to the lower end thereof, the horizontal secot a link rod 55 isconnected, the other end V of the link rod being connected to the lever 56 that controls the valve 5? in the verticalpipe section 43.v

Thebox 53 is supported by a bracket 58 mounted upon the saddle 12 as clearly shown in Figs. 1 and 2, the box 53 containing a solenoid 59 that has a pin connection 60 with the bearing shaft of thelever 54, as clearly shown in Fig. 3. The electric wiring system and track structure consists in laying the track rails 13 in block sections insulated as at 61, shown in Fig. 6, with a pair of ramp rails 62 supported on the ties 63 between the track rails 13' adjacent the torwardend of each block. The wire connections between the contacts and switch blades carried by the boxes 53 and the ramp rails 62 are shown more clearly in Figs; 1 and/1', a contact brush 64: engaging one of the ramp rails 62 has a wire connection 65 with the terminal a carried by one of the boxes, a wire 66; connected as'at 67 to the line wire 65 leads to theterminal -a carried by the box 53 at the other side of the body 'The contact brush 6st" engaging the other ramp rail has a line wire connection 65 withthe terminal b of-the adjacent box, the wire 66 connected as at 67 to the wire 65', extending to the terminal 'b of the other box 53, each'of the contacts carried by the boxes being provided with, a switchblade 68. ire connections 68 extend 'trom the terminals a? and atothe respective-switch blade 63, while wire Connections 68 extend from the terminals .Zi and 'Z)- to the respective switch contacts 53. The brushes 6-l are supported in any convenient manner upon the forward truck frame of the locomotive as illustrated in Fig. l, and it desired, contact members 6% of the type illus-' trated in Fig. 5 may be employed in lieu ot the contact brushes, the contact member 6 lhaving a tensioned roller 69that engages the ramp rail 62. Y
The electrical devices for energizing the spaced. ramps 62, illustrated in Fig; 6, includes a battery 70 'havinga lead wire 71 extending from one pole thereof to one of the ramps 62,- the lead wire .7 2 from the other pole of'the batteryTObeing connected. i

The traincon- .trol mechanism directly associated with the slide valve cylinder 1% has the ' pistons 33 and 33 in the electric control and manipulatin cylinders 17- and 28 respectively normally positioned at the rear ends of said cylinders as illustrated in Fig. '3, the pis- 'thereafterdischarged into "the drive cylinder 15 to'becontrolled in the usual manner by the engineer. The valve 57 in the steam pipe 43 and the valve 49 in'the branch pipe 48 are normally closed,v as is also the pet cock 52; the valve 46 in the branchpipe 45; being open while the pet cock 51 is also open. hen a train passes througha block in which the'ramp rails 62 are energized by the danger position of the semaphore arm 75, the contact brushes 64 and 64 enthe energized ramp rails 62 for bridging the same and completing a circuit troni the battery 7 0 to theswitches carried by the boxes53, energizingthe solenoids59 for moving the leverb l and lever 56 through the link rod connection 55 tor opening the valve 57 v the steam pipe 1 9 through the branch pipe 45 and into the rear end ofthe manipulat- 'ing cylinder 28, steam pressure: in the rear" to permit the flow ofsteam from end. of the manipulating cylinder sliding the piston 33 forwardly therein wit air escapinto'engagement with the contacts ing through the petcock 51, the forward movement of the piston 33 carrying the piston 33 forwardly in the electric control cylinder 17, movement thereof being limited by the piston 33 cngagingthe relatively long bearing'32 for opening the air line pipe 39 and closing'the port- 20 in the side of the electric control c linder, steam confined within the forward end of: the cylinder 17 escaping by way of the cutaway portion 27 in the separating block27 between the elec tric control and slide valve cylinder. The supply of steam to the slide valve cylinder is shut off by tne piston 33 and the flow of compressed air from the tankSt through the rear end of the electric control cylinder, as will at once be evident from an inspe tion of Fig; 3 is permitted, the air traveling through the pipe s'l, through the three-way valve 37 and single outlet pipe 39 for the application of the brakes. it will therefore be secn th'at the electric train control operates entirely independently of the steam and air. brake control that operated by the engineer, so that in e; se the engineer should fail to observe danger signals, the energized ramp rails-62 electrically associated with the solenoids 59' immediately release the steam through the, bypass pipe sections-above described for shutting oil the steam supply to the slide valve cylinder and automatically openlng the air brakelme for applymg the brakes. In resetting the apparatus,
and releasing the air brakes, it is necessary that the engineer leave his cab for operati; 3;

As above stated, the electric train control apparat-us operates entirely independently of the locomotive control in charge of the eng neer, the same when being set to an opera tive position being automatically operated when energized. ramp rails '62 are engaged by contact members,'the apparatus simultaneously shutting oil the supply of steam to the slide valve cylinder and opening the air brake line for applying the brakes. The separating of the contacts 73 and 77 1n the tending from the battery to the ramp rails 62 are dead, and contact brushes 64 and g in engagement with the ramp rails will not be atlected thereby as the semaphore arm shifted by a train in .a certain block energizes ramp rails 62 in a rearwardly positicned block that may represent any desiredbleck in the track.-
While the present embodiments as herein illustrated are what are believed to be preferable for accomplishing the purpose intended, it is to be understood that various char are contemplated as will fall within the scope of the subject matter claimed.
