UNITED STATES A1,617,659 PATENT OFFICE,
LEE LAMBOY, OF CHICAGO. ILLINOIS. ASSIGNOR TO SEFTON MANUFACTURING COR- 'PORATION, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, A CORPORATION OF NEW YORK.
CHICK BOX.
My invention relates to boxes adapted for shipment of chicks and more particularly to novel means for spacing the boxes ,apart when stacked on each other to afford proper ventilation for the chicks through the venilated openings formed at the top of the Heretofore various means have been employed for accomplishing this object but such prior devices have been ineffectual in some respects and expensive and diiicult to make. The most common practice is to secure wooden slats to the tops of the boxes but these slats add considerable weight to the boxes and are diicult to secure in position.
The principal object of my invention is to provide triangular strips preferably formed of corrugated board or the like and formed of one piece so bent as to provide a hollow spacer substantially triangular in cross section` one face of the spacer being adapted to r be glued to the bottom of the box.
Another object of my invention is to maintain the shape of the spacer by means of strips of adhesive tape wrapped around the spacer.
The above and incidental objects of my invention will become apparent from the following description taken lin connection with the drawings. l
In said drawing, Figure 1 is 'a perspective view of two chick boxes having spacers einbodying my invention applied thereto; Fig. 2 is anenlarged perspective view of a spacer lembodying my invention; and Fig. 3 is a fragmentary cross-sectional View. taken through the sheet of material from which the spacer. is formed, the view illustrating that the preferred material is corrugated paper board, though other suitable materia may be used, if desired.
In Fig. 1, I have illustrated two chick boxes 5 one mounted on the other. As is usual the lids, as well as the sides, of the boxes are provided with rows of Ventilating holes 6. In shipment the boxes are stacked or piled upon each other and it is` essential that the boxes be spaced apart so that the Ventilating holes in the lids are not covered, the holes being employed to furnish air to the chicks being shipped. I space the boxes apart by means of spacers 7, the construction of which is best illustrated in Fig. 2. Each spacer is formed of a strip of corrugated board or other suitable material. i The strip is' scored lengthwise to provide four sections or panels 8, 9,' 10 and 11. Sections 8. 9 and 10 are preferably of substantially the same width and sectlon 11 is slightly narrower. Thestrip is folded as shown in Fig. 2 so that the two outermost sections 8 and 11 overlap. In order to hold or maintain the shape of the spacer strips of adhesive tape 12, which may be formed of paper or other suitable material are wrapped around the spacer.
, After the spacers are so formed, the upper face of the outer section 11 is smeared wlth glue or any suitable adhesive material and then pressed against the bottom of the box,
the spacer thus being rigidly secured to the box. I preferably employ two spacers for I also lmaterially increase the strength of.
the spacer and make itl easier to form .the spacer. Having thus described my invention, Iwhat I claim is:
1. A box of the class described comprising a bottom and side walls, a cover, and a plurality of supports mounted upon said box,-
each of said supports comprising a single strip of material folded to form a triangular hollow shape and having means for holding and maintaining said strip in triangular form.
2. Ina box ofthe class described having Ventilating openings in the top thereof, a.
ing ventilatmg perforations and a plurality Toc of supports mounted o'n said Ibox, each of said supports comprising alsingle separate strip of material folded into .trlangular shape, meansfor maintaining the triangular shape of each support, and means for securing one face or side'ofeach support fiat p against the box.
4. In a box of the class describedv oom-- rate strip of material scored longitudinally lto form four sections, and bent on the scored shaped support while the remaining inner sections form the other sides thereof, and tape around the su port to maintain its triangular shape, ang glue for securing the double sides of the sup orts to the box.
In testimony whereo I have subscribed my name.
