Feb- 1927? E. EIDSEN v I BURNER CONTROLLING MEANS Filed July 13. 1925 Q EdwardEfilsen its ,5 ar rr EDwAnn apssa oantam r/r'i wAuK-nn isconsin,
. Patente Feb. a' iaza: if imhsg 1 nunnnn-oorirnont neawaits. A plicatik h and July 13, 1925. Serial No. 43,; si My invention relates to means for con-' pipe' line 11,saine ha ving therein the valve I trollingthe fuel' supply ofian ofil'burnejr, and ease the .Icheck valve 13, between which particularly to that type of burner which is is connected a pipe 14 which leads to the "plated within the. fire', box "of a heating atmosphere and having therein the valve 15. '60 h furnace adaptedfor donlestic 'use or the like. The pipe line 6 l1as'connected thereto the The objectof my invention is to provide "branch pipe 16 which leads to the burner means that will automatically cut off the 2 and'this pipe has arranged thereinfthe fx flow of fuel to the burner inthe even'tof automatically operate'd valve 17, 4 I
the extinguishing of the flame or a} leaky ,From the above descri tion, it will be ap-r 65 fburner. 4 parent that the operation ofthe means for A further object of the invention is the conveying fuel to the'burner is as follows: iirovision of means controlled by the leak- Assuming that-the supplytank 4 is empty age from the burnerfvalve, that will cut-fand itis desiredto transfer fuel from the olf'theflow of fuel'thereto. .-storagze"tank to" the supply tank, the operf It is a furthen ebject vof myfinventionator'closes valves 8 an'd15, andopens valves tofprovide means for indicatingfboth vis- 9 and 12, the pump-,7 is then operated and ually and audibly when the supply to the fuel will be raised from the storage tank burner has been cut off; to thesup'ply tank duntilthe desired amount A further object ,of'my' invention isto ther'ein'is indicated by. then-age 18 arranged q provide means ;that will indicate'invarious on on'e' end Iof thertanki After thed esired 1 'partsofrthehouse or in a' central station amount-of fuel has been placed inthe'tank when a fire'b reaks out in the building in 4, it is then necessary to place same .under hi h System i d v V I pressure, and this is done by closing valves In the accompanying drawihgsze V Qand'l2 ,'anjd'opening valves 8 and 1'5, a.fter Theyfigure shown therein is a detail view which the pumpis'operatedand air is drawn f showing he different parts essential in'the" in from the atmosphere through the pipe operation 'of the device. i i f .14 and forced into the tank t by the pump. Referring to the drawings in" detail, the In order to insure the proper pressure within numeralll designates the furnace of a heat th'etank 4, I have arranged in the pipe line ing system. or the like, in the fire box of 5, adjacent the tank 4; suitable pressure indi- .which is placed the liquid fuel burner 2, eating gages 19 and'20,one of which 1 is "same having the fuel controllingyalve 3, placed Within the room above, While the 'arranged 'within the supply line, and being other 'serves as an indicator within thelbas'eoperated by a chain or the like passing" lnentf When it is desiredto. pass the fuel 92 7 around apulley arranged on the valve stem 'to'the burner 2, the :valves 1'71and; 3 are "and a second'pulleyinounted for-actuation"opened andthedatte'r regulated by the 'o in" any part of the building in which thedeera-tor asdesiredj r l 7 v vice is installed and preferablyin'theroom The controlling means" for the fuel supabove. e plV to the burner is as follows: The burner The fuel for the burner is retained in the 'BVhas pivo tally'mounted thereto the bat 21, fuel supply tank 4 and under suitable air one end of which has set therein the cup pressure. The tank 4 has connected thereto 22 arranged to receive the drip from the the pipe lines 5 and 6, the former leading to control valve 3 of the'burner. The cup 22 is a pump 7 and the latter connecting the formheld adjacent the valve 3 by weight 23' i 45 er adjacent the pump. The line 5 has arcarried at the other end ofthe pivotal'bar ranged therein adjacent the connection of 21. Also arpring 25'. The lever 25 has connected ranged in the pipeline 5, between the pump thereto a cord "or cable 26 which passes and the connection of the line 6, is a check around a pulley 27 arranged in any con-venvalve 10, the purpose of which will be ap-' -ient place adjacentthe burner.
parent as the description proceeds. Arranged upon the ceiling efthe base- Leading from a suitable underground auxment is a bracket member havlngmounted iliary fuel storage tank. to the pump 7, is therein the pulley 28, and pivotally mounted fusible links 82.
to the bracket thearm 29, one end of which The pulley 28 has arranged on one side thereof a pin 36 adapted to engage a lug 37 carried by the pivoted "arm 29 and the lu bein held in en 'a ement thereto b 2': h c: b
the Weight 38 on the end of the arm.
The operation of the fuel control is as follows. Leakage from'the valve 3 drops into the cup 22, which causes the bar 21 to rock and re-lease the lever .25. the same bein b pulled over by the spring 25, and pulling upon the cord 26, thereby releasing the lug 87 from the pin and allowing the weight 35 to drop, thus closing the valve'17.'
In the event of a fire, the links 32 are I broken by the heat, thus'causing the weight .38 to drop, thus pulling on the cord 26 and releasing thesweight 35 which closes the valve 17 and cuts off the How of the fuel to the burner. I j The'means forindicating when the burner has ceased operation or when. a fire breaks out in the basement consists of a signal 39 pivotally mounted within the room above, and moved .to a'position as'indicated by the dotted lines when the arm 29 is caused to drop by the controlling means, the signal being connected to the arm by a cable 410. The indicating means consist further of an electric circuithaving therein a number of bells a1 and the lamps 42 positioned in various parts of the house or elsewhere if desired. The circuit is normally held open by the coiled spring 39 and when the weight 33 drops the main switch 4-3 of the electric circuit is thrown in an operative position by the movement of the cord 34:, sameopera-tingthe switch 43 by the engagement of the button 44: carried by the cord 34 with one arm of the switch.
From the foregoing, it is thoughtthat U the construction, operation and many ad-r vantages of the herein described invention will be apparent to' those skilled in the art Without furtherdescription, and it will be understood that various changesin the size,
shape, proportion and minor details of construction, may be resorted to without, de parting fromthe spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.
' Attention is directed to the tact that the furnace, as indicated at l, is provided with a sectional fire brick or clay core having a series of radial flues at. extending therethrough, whereby the heat is caused to travel through the fire clay and thus superheat the same to .a higher degree to increase the refiiciencylof the heating unit as a whole.
The fire clay core is preferablyrtormed in radial sections so that they canbe quickly dropped into place and removed for [repair purposes. I
Having thus fully described ray-invention,
what I claim as new, and desiregto ,s ecure'ioy Letters Patent, is l V V i In aJsystem of the character set forth,
the combinationof a liquid fuel b'urnerand a controlling valvetherefor, a bar pivotally mounted to the burner and having a'drip receiving cup on one end held. acent the burner, a s lever pivotally mounted; to, the burner and actuated by the-movement of the bar, a weight for closing said fuel valve and being connected thereto by a cable, said 7 cable being supported by a normally locked pulley, means for releasing said pulley'and permitting the closing of the valve, said means being actuated by the movement of the lever.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing l have hereunto set my hand at lVl-illxvaukee, in the county of Milwaukee and State of Wisconsin. r
