application filed July 5, This invention relates to new and useful improvements in a massaging''machinea @ne object of the invention is to provide an exercising or massaging apparatus, specially designed for use in exercising-thc trunk and limbs of the human body ae an :iid in the treatment oi disease and for the purpose of reducing the weight of the patient. i
Another object of the invention is to provide an apparatus of the character described by which the body may be exercised by a belt or ban-d which is adapted to ,surround the trunk or limbs of the patient and which is connected to a yioldable oscillating anchor so that the shock or vibration imparted to the body members Will oe somewhat relieved so as not to be too severe, or iniorious.
A further feature of the invention is to provide a device of the character described including means whereby the range of oscillatory movement of the anchor, to which the belt is attached, may be varied so asA to regulate operation of the beit.
A stili further feature of the invention resides in a novel type of cabinet ing and partially enclosing the operative mechanism.
With the above and other objects inlview the invention has particular relation to certain novel features of .consti-notion, opera# Ation and arrangementof parts, anexamplef of which is given'in this specification and iliustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein zv Figure l shows a vertical 'sectional view of the device. Q
Figure 2 shows a vertical sectional View taken at right angles ,to the View taken in Figure l. i
Figure 3 shov's and Figure 4- shows employed.
Referring now more drawings, wherein like ence designate similar figures, the numeral 1 of the cabinet a plan tview of the device;
aside View of the belt particularly to the 'numerals of referparts in each of the 'designates the base which is preferably circular mounted on this base there is supportends attached to th iat/B. Serial No. 724,303.
a tubular housing 2, preferably of about onchalf the diameter oi. the base l. The bousing has a cap .like cover 3 ittedonto the topthereof. l
l/V'ithiu the housing is asuitable suo port L3.- having'a lateral spindle 5 on which the large gear (i rotates. Mounted on the base l, outside. of the housing 2 there -i's an electric motor 7 whose shaft 8 has a small wheel 9 fixed the Eon and in mesh with. the gear 6. The Support 4 also carries a lateral` spindle l on which the connectingrod il is pivoted. The lower end of this rod has slot l2 and the gear 6. has an eccentric wristpin 13 which has ia bearing in the bearing block i4, mounted to slide'in said slot 12.
There is a vertical rocker shaft 15, whose lower end Works in the bearing 16 inthe top of the support i, and whose upper end is fitted through the bearing- 17 in the cover 3. This shaft has a limited vertical movement in said bearings.` 'Fixed to the shaft there is an oscillating arm 1,8 Whose outer end Works through the bearing 19. This bearing is'mounted to rotate on ay vertical axis in the bearing block 20. This block 20 is slidably mounted in an oblong length#y wise siot 2l meeting rod 1i,7 and moves buck and fo therein as said rod oseillates.
rth
.shaft 15 there is a belt anchor' 22'Wl1ich is formed o f iexible material such as spring steel, and is Substantially arcuate in plan View.I The massaggi e respective ends of this anchor by suitable hooks, or by any other approved fastening means. The middle sec tion of the belt is. comparatively wide and preferably formed of rubber or other material w'hichwill notabradc the skiniof the patient Ain use.
In operation, the belt 23 the member of the body to and the motor then started. tion will be thereby imparte be operated on, A rocking-mod to theshaft 1l5, thus oscillatingtie anchor 2:2 and the oclt 2d. As the belt is drawn tightly around the patient a vibratory or massaging motion an oblong lengthwise 1n 4the upper end of the :onn Secured to the upperend of the roc-lieu I ng belt as 23 has its is looped around 1,616,831 i 8- ing its ends free, a looped belt adapted to normally at right angles'to the normu] pinne pass around the body of a patient and Whose of the patient and shaft, vsons to impart :L ends are fastened to the respective free ends side swinging movement to the belt. l0 of theV anchor, the ends of said anchor being Y In testimony whereof I have signed my turned toward the patient'so as to move name. to this specification. back :md forth, as the shaft rocks in frontiV t of the plane passing through said shaft and OLIVER P.
