CONTROL SYSTEM.

My .invention relates to motor-control sysltems, andparticularly to that class of control systems which are employed in connection with elevators, hoists, and similar apparatus. l
-The object of my invention is to provide means under the control of a single, manually-operable master-switch, whereby the operator is enabled, at his option, to effect. the automatic stoppage of the car at any given floor-level, to pass the given floor, or to start i .y therefrom, after a stop has been made.
With thisgeneralobject in view, my invention consists in a control-systein characterized` by .having a manually-operable master-switch for controlling the movement of the car, which, when in one position, will diverty a control-current through an automatic switch,operable by the movement of they car, and when in another position, will render the said automatic switch ineffective by vcausing the n control-current to flow through an independent channel, whereby the operator is enabled, at his option and by means of a single handle, to eect the automatic stoppage ofthe car at any given floorlevel, to pass the given floor, or to start therey from, after a stop has been made.
l My-'invention further consists in certain details of construction and combinations of parts as will be hereinafter 'described and particularly recited in the claims.
Ijam aware that'it has been proposed to effect the automatic stoppage of an elevator carby means of an automatic switch operatedby the movement of the car, but such a switch cannot be rendered ineffective at the will of the operator by. means of a masterswitch, but requires the manipulation of a separate element to cut it out of action, in order toenable the operator to pass a given floor, or to start therefrom, after a stop has been made. The annoyances and difiiculties 4of operation inherent in such a system are obviated under my invention, as will hereinafter appear.
In the embodiment of my invention herein shown, the driving` motor consists of an armature 10 and a lield-magnet-winding 11 which latter is operatively connected to a positive line-conductor 12 and to a negative line-conductor 13 in the customary manner. A resistor 14 is interposed in the circuit through the armature, during the starting period. This resistor is cut out of the armature circuit shortly after the start of the motor by a slow-acting automatic switch 15, also in the usual manner.
Current is sent through the armature 10y in one direction, as, for instance, to cause the motor to drive the elevator upward by an automatic switch 16 having double contacts, as shown, and operated by what I will call the up-control solenoid 17. Current is also sent through the armature, but in the opposite direction, by an automatic switch 18 having double contacts as shown, and operated by a solenoid 19, which I shall designate the down-control solenoid. One terminal of each of the solenoids 17 and 19 is connected by a conductor 20 to the negative line-conductor 13. The opposite terminal of the Lip-control solenoid 17 is connected by a conductor 21 to an Lip-control contact 22 of the inaster-control switch 23, which is mounted in the elevator car, generally designated by the numeral 24, and moving Ain a shaftway- 25, while the remaining terminal of the down-control solenoid 19 is connected by a conductor 26 to a down-control contact 27 of the master-control switch 23.
The positive line-conductor 12 extends to the master-control switch, where it supplies current to two contacts 28 and 29. The said positive line-conductor 12 is also connected, as at 30, to the pivotal blade 31 of an automatic switch, generally designated by the numeral 32, and mounted on the exterior of the car 24, and including a contact 33 connected by a conductor 34 to a contact 35 of the inaster-control switch.
The switch-blade 31 of the automatic switch 32 is normally maintained in engagement with the contact 33 by a spring 36, and is provided with a roller 37 adapted to engage cams located adjacent each door-level, only one of which, however, is shown in the Cil drawings, and lis designated by the 'numeral 38.
The master-control switch 23 includes a controller-arm 39 having a handle 210 at lits outer end, and pivotally mounted as at 11. rlhe inner end is formed with a switch-blade Zi2 adapted to engage with the contacts 22, 27, 28, 29, and 35.
Assuming that the car is traveling in the down direction and that the o aerator wishes to stop at the floor-level 1?), iie will move th-'e controller-handle 10 into Vthe position in which it 'is shown in Fig. 2, whereby the motor-control circuit, which causes the down-control solenoid 19 to move the switch 18 so as ,to cause the motor to rotate inthe prop-erdirection tor the down-tr`avel of the car, willktlow from the positive line-conductor`12, through the blade B1 ot the automatic switch 32, through the Contact 33 thereof, and thence through the conductor 3d to the contact S5, through the mastercontrol switch-blade 42, to vthe contact 27, through vthe conductor 2G, lthence through the solenoid 19 to the negative line-'conductor 13.
Vith the master-'control switch in this position, 'and the 'car traveling in thefdown direction, 'as described, shortly before 'the car reaches the floor-level 43, the roller 37 ot 'the switch-blade 31 willlengage the cam 38 and disngage the said lblade from the Contact 33,and hence shut'oit they supply ot current to'the down-control'solenoid 19, per mitting its automatic switch18 to open and thus e'iiect the stoppage ot the motor, and hence the car.
New, it at'ter the automatic stoppage just described, the operator `wishes to start the car again in the down direction, he has merely to move the controller-handle 40 into the position in which it is shown in Fig. '3, whereby the motor-control circuit will flow 'from the positive line-conductor 12, through the contact 29, masterscontrol switch-blade 42, Contact 2T, conductor 26, to the downcontrol solenoid 19, and thenc'e'to the negative line-conductor I153, with the vetie'c-t of energizingthe down-control.solenoid 19, and causing its automatic switch 18 to close a circuit tli'rough the armature and thus'cause the motor to drive the car inthe down direction, and'to continue todo so, so long as the controller is held in this position, or until `the car reaches the limit 'of its downward-travel. y y 1t, upon approaching` the Hoor-'level 43, theop'e'ra'torhas no desire to stop, it will be understood that, by moving the controller into the position shown in Fig. 3, he may thereby render the automatic switch '32 ineffective and cause the c'ar to continue its downward-travel pastthis floor.
To eiie'ct the automatic stoppage of the car when "it is traveling inthe up directio-n, the operator would move 'the masterswitch control-'handle l,t0 Vpartway to the right oit the ott position so that the switch- 'blade 42 would engage the ' contacts 22 and 35, whereby the -tip-control solenoid 17 would bc energized, so as to operate the switch 16 to close a circuit through the armature 10 'of the motor ina direction opposite from that in which it flows when it is desired to have the car travel in the down direction. rhis circuit would [low trom the line-conductor 12 througl the switch-blade B1, contact'l, conductor Bfhcontact 35, switch-arm I12, contact 22, conductor 21, through the solenoid 17, and thence through the conductor 2O to the negative line-conductor 13.
To start the car in its upwardtravel, af'tter an automatic stoppage, 4or to pass any given floor after having started, the 'controller` arm 89 is moved to the liinit'oft its "travel to the ri glit, so 'that its switch-blade .4t2 engages the contacts 22 and 28 ot the master controlswitch, whereby the up-control solenoid 17 will be energized by a circuit iicwi'ng lfrom the positive line-conductor 12, through contact 28, switch-blade L12, contact 22, conductor 21, lip-control solenoid 17, and thence by the conductor 2O to the negative line-conductor 13.

I claim:
1. A control system, including -a car, `a motor therefor, an automatic switch operable by the movement ot the said car, `a master-control switch carried by the said carand manually operable by meansof la single handle, which, when in'one position, causes a motor-control current to ilow through Ithe vsaid automatic `switch, which is thereby lplaced in series with the said master-control switch, and when `in another position, to Arender the said automatic switch ineffective by causing the control-current to flow through independent channels.
2. A control system, including a car, a motor therefor, an automatic Vswitch operable by th'e movement ot the said car, a master-control` switchcarried'by the said'car and manuallyoperable by means'ot a'sinvle handle, and a control-circuit :governed iy the said master-switch and by 'means of which itmay connect itself in series with the said automatic switch, and including an up-control solenoid and a down-control solenoid, vand having two channels of flow, one of the said channels including the said automatic switch, and the other being independent thereof.
3. A control system, including a car, a
motor therefor, an automatic switch operable 'by themovement of the said car, a master-control switch 'carried by the said car and manually operable by means of a rsingle handle, and having contacts, one of i the said contacts being connected to the motor for causing it to drive the car in one i direction, another of the said contacts being Y trol-circuit necting itself in series withV the said automatic switch at the option of the operator. 4. A control system, including a car, a motor therefor, an automatic switch operable by the movement of the said cai', a l master-control switch carried by the said car and manually operable by means of a single handle, and having contacts, one of the said contacts being connected to an upcontrol solenoid, another of the said contacts being connected with a down-control solenoid, two control-circuit channels, one of the said channels including the said automatic switch, and the other being independent thereof, means operated by the handle of the master-control switch for connecting either of said contacts with either of the said control-circuit channels, whereby the said master-control switch has capacity for connecting itself in series with the said automatic switch at the option of the operator. 5. A control system, including a car, a motor therefor, an automatic switch operable by the movement of the said car, a master-control switch carried by the said car and manually operable by means of a single handle, a control-circuit governed by the said master-switch and having two channels of flow, one of the said channels including the said automatic Switch, and the other being independent thereof, whereby the said master-control switch has capacity for connecting itself in series with the said automatic switch at the option of the operator.
