ORCHARD HEATER.
Original application led October 21, 1924, Serial No. 744,924. Divided and this application filed April 19,
1926. serial No. 103,003.
Division of application Serial No. 744,924, filed Gctober 21, 1924.
The object of t-he invention is to provide a heater of a form designed to most effectively radiate the hea-t of a` given quantity of fuel, so that the maximum eect may be obtained, as in the heating of orchards and the like to protect trees from frosts and chilling blasts; and to provide af heater readily constructible from plastic material in order that it may be built at the point of use and constitute a comparatively small loss in the event of breakage.
With this object in view, the invention consist-s in a construction and combination of parts of which a preferred embodiment is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein:
Figure l is a side elevational view of the 20 heater, partly in section.
Figure 2 is a top plan view.
Figure 8 is a vertical sectional View on the plane indicated by the line 3 3 of Figure l.
Figure 4 is a side elevational view, partly broken away, of the cover.
The tire-pot l, which is adapted either for casting in Portland cement, clay or like moldable material, is of inverted frusto-conical form and provided at its upper or larger end with the handle elements 2 consisting of angular metal pieces of which one arm .is embedded in the material of the heater in the casting of the latter. Preferably two handles are provided at dialmetrically opposite sides but in order that the heater may readily seat in an upright position. the feet l3 are provided. There are preferably three of these and they are likewise formed of an- 49 guiar metal pieces of which one arm of each is embedded .in the material of the heater.
Intermediate between the feet 3, draft openings 4 are provided below the plane of bearing on the interior slant-ing wall of the heater and being of a diameter suflicient to space it above the plane of the feet 3 and thus provide an air chamber below the grate a preferably cast iron grate 5 frictionally into which air is admitted through the lateral openings 4. Openings 6 are provided in the sidewall and extend a substantial distance in the direction of the height of the beater.
ln the use of the heater, the fuel is deposited in the latter on top of the grate 5 vments indefinitely, but should it be broken,
it is susceptible of quiclrreproduction in a properly constituted mold.
When not in use, it is designed to cover the heater at the top and to this end a sheet metal cover 7 is provided, the same having a depending peripheral iange 8 in which, at diametrically opposite points, the bayonet slots 9 are formed, these slots engaging the handles and serving, togetherwith them, as a means for interlocking the cover in place so that it may not be blown off during wind storms and may thus protect the fuel from dampness when the heater is not inuse. The handles constitute means for transporting the heater from place to place.
The invention having been described, what is claimed as new and useful is:
An orchard heater consisting of a nre pot, and handle members of angular form having one arm enibeddedv in the wall of the fire pot and the other arm extending radially from the lire pot, and a flanged cover provided with bayonet slots having detachable interlocking engagement. with the handle members.
In testimony whereof he affixes his sig-r i nature.
