MAURICE C. RYPINSKI, 0F YONKERS, NEW YORK, .ASSIGNOR TO BRANDES LABORA- TORIES, INQ, OF NEWARK, NEW J ERSEY, A CORPORATION OF NEW JERSEY.
Application filed January My invention relates broadly to sound reroducing diaphragms and more particulary to the construction of a conical shaped dia hragm.- d
ne of the objects of my invention is to vide a conical diaphragm formed of a sin-- gle integral sheet of material having one portion thereof ri idfor the reproduction of sound and a peripheral ortion surrounding the rigid portion whlch is flexible or semi-rigid in order to permit movement of the sound reproducing surface as a whole.
Still another object of my invention'is to provide a conical diaphragm which may be readily' molded between two surfaces from material which is hardened throughout the central portion of the diaphragm and 2-5 treated to form a resilient peripheral portion around the central portion of the diaphragm. A further object of my invention is to provide a construction of sound reproducing dia ghra 'm which may, be readily molded from ru ber and treated throughout its pe ripheral portion to secure a resilient peripheral flange integrally united with the rigid central portion thereof.
My invention will be more clearly understood from the specification hereinafter following by reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: f
Figure 1 is a front view of the conical diaphragm of my invention; Fig. 2 is a cross-sectional view taken on line 2-2 of Fig. 1; and Fig. 3 is an enlargedfragmenizgary sectional view taken on line 33 of I Ieretofor'e in the'art in the construction of conical diaphragms for electromagnetic sound reproducers 1t has been customary to employ paper which is rolled into a conical shape and the adjacent edges secured together, in a seam. In order to resiliently mount such diaphragms it has been necessary to secure a flexible flange around the periphery of the paper.diaphragm thus formed. cry of the paper cone. This construction has a number of inherent disadvantages and requires considerable labor in its manufacture. There are a number of steps required in assembling the paper material, punching the material to size, forming the material over a conical pattern, subsequently gluing the seams of the material, and then providing a resilient circular flange for the peripheral support of such a diaghragm. In my present invention I avoid all these manufacturing difliculties and in addition I provide a diaphragm of permanent construction. That is to say, the conical diaphragms of the prior art have been ineffective -to the extent that there is a tendency for the seam to spring or the peripheral flange tends to leave the peripheral edge of the paper cone, thereby destroying the effectiveness of the diaphragm.
1n the present invention I provide a molded form of conical diaphragm where the material of the diaphragm may be pressed between two surfaces such as porcelain polished to provide a seamless cone. I have found that rubber is particularly suitable for this use. I may however, employ a sheet of linen on which bakelite is depos ited forming a bakelized linen conical surface. A part of this surface is treated to secure a hardened central body portion for the cone. In the case of rubber, the'central' portion is vulcanized leaving a flexible or semi-vulcanized outer surfa e in the form oh integrally connects with the vulcanized or hardened portion of the cone. In the case of bakelite only the central portion is treated-to harden it leaving the outer peripheral portion flexible for the suspension of the central portion.
My invention will be more clearly understood by a detailed reference to the accompanying drawings as follows:
I have shown the central portion of the cone diaphragm as represented by reference character 1 formedfrom the hardened rubber or bakelized linen. United to the bod 1 I provide an annular rim portion 3 whic curved as represented at 2 and secured at such as by means of rivets 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, and
12. The flange portion 4, 2, and 3 of the annular rim is flexible and yet it is an integral portion of the body, portion 1. of the diaphragm. In order to more clearly illustrate the difference between the characteI -I istics of the flange portion 4, 2-and 3 and the body portion 1 of the cone I have shown in Figs. 2 and 3 cross-hatching in opposite directions to show that the central body portion 1 is formed of rigid material while the peripheral portion/l, 2 and 3 is'formed of soft flexible resilient material integrally united with the body portion 1. It will be observed that there are no seams in the diaphragm construction of my invention and that accordingly there is no tendency for the diaphragm to change its condition during its period of use. The diaphragm is constructed for long life and'at the same time the construction affords inexpensive manufacture and assembly. I have not illustrated a connection to the apex of the cone for an electromagnetic driver but it will be understood thatapex pieces may be attached to the apex of the cone on opposite sides thereof and a connecting rod secured therethrough for connection to an electromagnetic driver.
While I have described my invention in certain particular embodiments, I desire that it be understood that modifications maybe made and that'no limitations upon the invention are intended other than those imposed by the scope of the appended claims.
What I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is as follows:
'1. A sound reproducing diaphragm com prising in combination a conical shaped body portion, a resilient peripheral flange sur-' rounding said body portion, and having elastic properties for allowing bodily movement of said body portion, said resilient peripheral flange being constructed of the same kind of'material as the said body fportion and integrally united therewith for orming a flexible suspension for said body portion.
-2. A conical shaped diaphragm comprising incombination a central body portion, a peripheral resilient flange surrounding said body portion and having elastic properties for allowing bodily movement of said body portion, said flange being integrally united with said body portion and forming a suspension for said body portion whereby .said body portion is free a) vibrate independently of said flange.
3. A conical shaped diaphragm comprising in combination a rubber sheet formin a central body portion, an annular rub er sheet connecting said central body ortion and forming a suspension rim for said body portion, said body portionbeing vulcanized and said rim being left in a resilient state for the resilient suspension ofthe vulcanized vulcanized rubber and said annular rim portion being formed frpm soft rubber, whereby said rim portion retains its resilient characteristics for the flexible suspension of said vulcanized rubber portion.
6. A sound reproducing diaphragm comprising in combination a central body portion, an annular rim portion integrall united with said central body portion,-eac of said portions bein molded from rubber and said central body portion being vulcanized for securing a hardened sound reproducing surface while leaving said annular rim portion in soft resilient condition for the flexible suspension of said central body portion. c
