PROCESS 0F CLOSING JARS.
Application med March 28, 1921. Serial No. 456,304,
The invention relates to new and useful improvements in the process of closing ref ceptacles, and more particularly closing jars.
An object of the invention is to provide a process of closing jars, whereby the closure may be secured to the jar and the jar sealed by the reforming of the/plastic sealin material.
n the drawings which show by way of illustration one embodiment of the invention- Figure 1 is a vertical sectional view through a jar having a closure thereon shaped so that the sealing material may be reformed in accordance with -my process for securing the closure to. the jar;
Figure 2 shows the sealing material as having been operated upon for closing the J In carrying out the process, I prefer to use a closure consisting of a top portion 1 having an inverted channel portlon 2 adapted to receive the extreme upper edge of the wall of the jar, which is indicated at 3. Said channel portion extends into an outwardly projecting portion 4 which lits close to the outer wall of the jar throughout a portion of its length and is then tapered outwardly and downwardly, as indicated at 5. Formed as a part of this portion 5 is an outwardly rojecting portion 6, which is provided wit a depending flange 7 A pocket is thus formed between the inner wall of the depending flange 7 the lower wall of the outwardly projecting p ortion 6, the inner wall of the tapered portion 5 and the outer wall of the jar, which pocket may be said to terminate in a horizontal line containing the lower edge of the flange 7; Located in this 'pocket and projecting therefrom is a sealing ring 8 which is preferably formed of rubber which has not been vulcanized to any great extent, so that this sealing material is very plastic and is capable of being reformed and maintaining its new shape. Said ringnot only projects froin the pocket, but is o f slightly greater area than the cross sectional area of the pocket down to a horizontal line containing the lower edge of the flange 7 This closure per se forms no part of the present invention, but is shown, described and claimed in my co-pending applicatlon,
`ing the closure on the jar.
the tapered portion of the pocket, formed by the outwardly projecting portion 5 of the closure, causing the sealing material to firmly grip and adhere to the side walls of the pocket and lthe side walls of the jar. This crowding of the sealing material into the pocket brings about a very tight seal and serves as an eiicient means for r tain- It will benoted that by In process of' closing, I bring about a seal wit out in anyway bending the metal of the closure. Heretofore, in the closing of jars, as far as I am aware, there has been a reshaping or bending of the metal and this, of course, brings more or less pressure to bear upon the lass forming the jar, often resulting in brea ing the jar.
By my improved process, I am able to sealv the jar without any bending of the metal and the onl pressure against the jar is through the p astic sealing material itself, which, of course, is more or less elastic, and thus the breakage is reduced to a minimum. Itis obvious that the jar may be shaped in various ways and the steps of the process may be greatly varied. The essential feature consists in the reshaping or remolding of the sealing ,material after the closure is placed on the jar for bringing about the seal.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to Secure by Letters Patent, is:
The process of sealing a jar having a straight outer face comprising placing a closure on the jar, which, closure has a depending Hange spaced from the side wall of the jar so as to form a pocket therebetween, placing a ring of sealing material inn 5 pocket, exerting a pressure on capable of heini re-formed and' retninin its re-formed s ape in said pocket sai ring being of greater cross-sectiona area. than the pocket and 'protruding from the t e`protrudmg portion of the sealing rin while holding the'closure on the 'ar so t at said sealing ring is forced into t e pocket and wedged between the depending flange of the closure u and the side wall of the 'ar, whereb the closure is sealed on the Jar and he d on the jar by the sealing material;
t In testimony whereof, I aix my signaure. f
