Description

J. O LEARY Feb. 8.1921. 1,616,464
DIRECTORY Fild. Oct. 9, 1925 4 g .,'1\ 4 48 as v} 5mqsmon 707m; 0 ear ATTORNEY Patented Feb. 8, 1927.
UNITED STATE tric Y JOHN OLEARY, or BROOKLYN, NEW YOBK.
DIBEQTORY.
, Application filed October 9, 1925. Serial No. 61,402. 1
provide a small, compact device approxi mately like a common pocket watch, in which is contained an endless tape bearing the names of the places along the route to be travelled, and having means to bring each name consecutively into observation.
A further object is intlie provision of a pocket carried appliance in which a series of frame carried directory rolls are interchangeably engaged, permitting ready substitution, all being movable by a single means.
These and other aims and objects are attained by the novel construction and arrangement of parts hereinafter described and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, forming a material part of this disclosure, and in which Figure 1 is a partial side elevational, partial sectional view of one embodiment of the invention, the section being taken on line 11 of Figure 2.
Figure 2 is a sectional View taken on line 22 of Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a sectional View of a modification in construction, the section being taken on line 33 of Figure 4.
Figure 4 is a transverse sectional view taken on line 44 of Figure 3.
The device as will be seen by referring to the drawing, is similar to that of a watch, in shape and proportions, and consists of a casing 10 and back 11.
A stem 12,provided with a conventional ring 13, is fixed at one point in the casing and directly opposite the stem is a hinge 14 by which is connected a cover 15 provided with the usual snap catch and having at its center an elongated recess 16, the inreaching walls of which contain an opening 17 closed by a transparent plate 18 on the inner side.
Extending inwardly from opposite sides and bottom of the casing 10 are pairs of forks 19 and engaged between each pair are lugs 20 extending from a ring frame 21 filling the space between the back 11 and cover 15. p
Also formed in the ring are pairs bf bearings 22 and 23 containing spindles on ing an endless web or tape 27 provided with perforations 28 at its edges to engage pins 29 fixed 1n the drums, the tapes bearing aseries of names of localities 30, as best seen in Figure 3.
In Figures 1 and 2 the ring 21 is shown with a flattened side 31 and'th'e spindle 24 extends through the bearing, adjacent to which is a loose disc 32' havinga notch 33 to receive a stop 34 fixed in the frame 31, limiting the amount of movement that can be given the disc.
A tension spring 35 is arranged to draw the disc notch against the stop, at which time a pin 36, set in the disc, is in position to be moved by the end of a lever 37 pivoted on a screw 38 and extending through an opening 39 in the casing 10, adjacent the ring stem 12, and provided with an operating knob 40.
Held by the key 41 to the end of the spindle 24 is a ratchet wheel 42, engaged by a pawl 43pressed into operative position by a spring 44.
It will now be seen that upon swinging the lever 37, the disc will be rotated and the pawl pivoted thereon will advance the ratchet one tooth, thus conveying motion to the drums and tape carried by them.
In the modification shown in Figures 3 I and 4, the drum 25 is provided with a ratchet 45 at one end, the teeth of which are engaged by a fiat spring 46, and at the other end is a spur gear 47 in mesh with a mat ng gear 48 p1nned to a spindle 49 ournalled in the rmg frame 21and havmg an enlarged head 50. I
The head 50 is forked toreceive a lug 51 formed at the end of a spindle 52, extending through the stem 12 and provided with a knurled actuating knob 53 disposed Having thus described my invention, what
I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
'1. A. device of the class described comprising a casing in the size and shape of a watch, a pair of spools rotatable therein,
an endless tape trained over said spools, said tape bearing alist of localities, and clutch actuated means to manipulate said spools to exhibit the name of locality through an opening in said casing.
2. A device of the class described com prising a Watch-like casing having a hinged cover containing an aperture, a frame removably engaged in said casing, a plurality of rolls revolubly mounted in said frame, an endless, strip of flexible material trained over the rolls, said strip bearing insignia,
, and a stem Winder for advancing said strip progressively to disclose the lines thereon consecutively through the aperture in said cover. 1 q '3JA device of the class described comprising a. Watch-like casing having a hinged cover containing an aperture, a. frame removably engaged in said casing, a plurality of rolls revolubly mounted in said frame, an endless strip of flexible material trained over the rolls, said strip bearing transverse lines of imprint, a stem extending through said casing to actuate said rolls whereby said strip may be progressively advanced, clutch means forretaining said rolls in an adjusted position, and a transparent plate disposed in the aperture of said cover through Which said lines of imprint are consecutively visible.
In Witness whereof I have'afiixed'my signature.
' JOHN OLEARY.
