MOLDING- FLASK.

The invention relates to molding flasks and more particularly to a construction which provides sand strips on one of the sections thereof with reinforcing bars out side the sand strips to provide a bearing surface of large area between the section to which the sand strips are adjustably secured and the section on which this section rests. The construction according to the invention also provides a two-position spring locking arrangement so that the sand strip may be positively locked in either its inner or outer position. I
A sand strip is preferably secured to the bottom of each side. the sand strips on each two adjacent sides being connected together to form a set, the sets being secured to hand pieces which are adapted to move the sets into and out of the mold space. The spring locking arrangements hold the sets in either one of the positions so that it cannot accidentally move to the other position. The presence of the reinforcing bars not only provides a large bearing surface for the up per section on the lower section, thereby insuring that the upper supporting surface of the lower section is kept in good condition, but also prevents springing of the sand strips.
Various other objects and advantages of the'invention will be obvious from the fol lowing particular description of one form of mechanism embodying my invention or from an inspection of the accompanying drawings; and the invention also consists in certain new and novel features of construc tion and combinations of parts hereinafter set forth and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings I have shown for purposes of illustration one form of mechanism embodying the invention, in which Fig. 1 is a side elevation of a two part snap flask having the invention applied thereto; a
Fig. 2 is a plan View of the bottom of the upper section showing the improved sand strip and reinforcing bar construction; and
Fig. 3 is a fragmentary view of the sec tions in position, a partial cross-section taken on the line 3 3 of Fig. 2 beingshown of the upper section or part.
In the following description and in the claims parts will be identified by specific names for convenience, but they are intended to be as generic 1n their application to sim-- 1lar parts as the art Wlll permit.
Referring now to the drawing, the flask shown for purposes of illustration, is of the two partsnap type. The lower section 1 which is commonly called the drag is pro vided with upstanding ti-type pins 2 and the upper section 3 commonly called the cope is provided with guides t cooperating with the pins 2 to insure a true separation of the two part flask without destroying the mold, as is well understood. The sections may be made of any suitable material but are preferably made of cast aluminum.
The lower or section comprises a four sided rectangular box having both its lower and upper ends open as is usual in flasks of this type. The inner faces of the walls are smooth, the walls preferably be ing slightly tapered upwardly and inwardly at some desirable angle as five degrees to facilitate separating the section from the mold. At the upper and lower ends of the section are provided top and bottom outwardly extending flanges 5 and 6 respectively, the flanges being connected by rein forcing ribs 7 at the sides, the corner reinforcing ribs 8 projecting preferably in line with diagonals drawn between opposite corners of the section. The bottom surface of the lower flange 6 is made smooth to provide an accurate plane surface to rest upon a suitable plate or support (not shown). The upper surface of the upper flan e 5is also smooth to provide a true plane surface for the upper section to rest upon' The lower section 1 has the upstanding V-type pins 2 preferably secured to the reinforcing ribs 7.
The upper section 3 comprises a box having rectangularly arranged side-s, open top and bottom ends, the side walls having smooth, plane inner faces preferably slightly tapered upwardly and inwardly, the taper being coextensive with the taper on the lower section. The upper section has top and bottom flanges 11 and 12 respectively which are connected by reinforcing ribs 13 at the sides and by reinforcing ribs 14 at the corners, as in the lower section. gecured preferably to reinforcing ribs 13 are the guide members 4: which have openings therein to accommodate the V-typ'e pins 2 thereby insuring a truly longitudinal separation of the upper and lower sections with no lateral or twisting movement when the sections are separated as is well understood in the art.
In order to provide a means for preventing the packed molding sand from dropping out of the upper section 3 when it is lifted from the lower section 1 for the purpose of removing the pattern or for any other purpose, a plurality of sand strips 16 are provided which are constructed to he moved preferably a small distance into the mold space to provide ledges to prevent the sand from falling out of the section. Each wall has a sand strip adjustably secured to its lower face at the lower flange 12. The sand strips of each pair of adjoining walls are connected together to form a set preferably at the corner of the walls at which point they are also connected to a hand engaging member 17 and by'means of which the sand strips can be moved. Each sand strip has a plurality of slots 18 through which extend flanged collars 19 made preferably from hardened steel. In the bottom flange 12 are a plurality of holes 20 having counter bores in which the flanged ends of the collars 19 are positioned. Reinforcing bars 21 are provided outside the sand strips 16 through which are passed fastening devices 22 such as bolts having their heads counter sunk in the reinforcing bars and extending through the collars 19 and through the flange 12. The reinforcing bars are rigidly secured to the bottom flange, the collars 19 acting as spacers to provide suflicient clearance space to insure free movement of the sand strips 16 and to prevent clogging with sand. It should be noted that the wear caused by movement of the sand strips is taken by the reinforcing bars 21 and collars 19.
Each set of sand strips is provided with a depression 25 preferably at the corner where the sand strips are secured together. Cooperating with the depression 25 is a locking member such as a ball 26 pressed against the sand strips by a helical spring 27 both spring 27 and ball 26 being located in the hole 28 in the corner. It will easily be seen that in the position shown in Fig. 3 the spring pressed ball will prevent the sand strips from moving outwardly accid-entally. When it is desired to remove the sand strips from the mold space the hand member 17 is moved substantially in a diagonal direction, the slots 18 allowing the sand strips to be moved out of the sand space. The spring pressed ball 26 will then engage the downwardly bent edge of the sand strip, thereby locking the set of sand strips in its outward position. The length of the slots 18 limit the movement of the sand strips in either direction.
The sand strips on the sides of the section 3-having the guides 4 may be provided with clearance notches 30 to allow the sand strips to move clear of the pins 2.
It will be seen that this construction is simple, cheap and very durable. There are a few parts and each can be made of rugged construction. The reinforcing bars act as a support of large area for the upper section, thereby obviating the wearing of holes or depressions in the upper supporting surface of the lower section from extensive use which would he the case if the upper section had its sand strip secured thereto by means of lugs or bolts which directly rested against the lower section. Furthermore, the locking arrangement which locks the sand strips in either their inner or outer positions prevents accidental movement from one position to the other, this resulting in a great saving in molds which might be destroyed if the sand strips should accidentally move to the wrong position.
While I have shown and described and have pointed out in the annexed claims certain novel features of my invention, it will be understood that various omissions. substitution-s and changes in the forms and details of the device illustrated and in its operation may be made by those skilled in the art without departing from the spirit of my invention.
Having described my invention, I claim:
1. A molding flask section having side walls defining a mold space, means for holding sand within said space including a sand strip, means for adjustaloly moving said strip into and out of said space, and means for locking said strip in adjusted position out of said space.
2. A molding flask section having side walls defining a mold space, means for holding sand within said mold space including a sand strip, means for adjustably moving said strip into and out of said space, said walls having an opening, a spring pressed member in said opening. said sand strip having depressions cooperating with said member, whereby said sand strip may be locked in position either in or out of said space.
3. A molding flask section having side walls defining a mold space, a sand strip for each wall, the sand strips on each pair of adjoining walls being secured together at the common corner of the section to form a set, means for adjustably securing said sets to said walls so that said sand strips may be moved into and out of said space, said corner having an opening, a spring pressed member in said opening, each of said sets having depressions cooperating with said spring pressed member, whereby said sets may be locked in position either in or out of said space.

5. A molding flask section having side walls defining a mold space, means for holding sand within said space including a sand strip, and means for providing a surface bearing of large area on an adjoining section including a reinforcing bar. I
6. A molding flask section having side walls defining a mold space, a sand strip for each side Wall, a reinforcing bar for each side wall outside said sand strip, and means for securing said bars and said strips to said Walls so that said strips are adjustable into and out of said mold space.
7. A molding flask section having side Walls defining a mold space, and having openings, a sand strip for each Wall having slots, a reinforcing bar for each wall, collars disposed in said slots between said bars and said Walls, fastening devices having their heads countersunk in said bars and extending thru said collars and said openings, the sand strips on each pair of adjoining Walls being secured together at the corner of the section to form a set, said slots being so arranged that said strips may be moved into and out of said space.
8. A molding flask section having side Walls ending in a flange and defining a mold space, said flange having openings with counter bores at their outer ends, a sand strip for each Wall having slots, a reinforcing bar for each Wall, flanged collars disposed in said slots and located in said counter bores, fastening devices having their heads countersunk in said bars and extending thru said collars and said openings, the sand strips 011 each pair of adjoining walls being secured together at the corner of the section to form a set, a hand member secured to each set at the corner, said slots being so arranged that said hand members may be moved diagonally away :trom said sides to Withdraw said strips from said space.
