IMPROVEMENT IN COM-BlNED GANG=PLOWS AND CULTIVATORS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 161,592, dated April 6, 1875; application filed December 23, 1874.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, WILLIAM CLEMnN'rs, of Fiskville, in the county of Travis and State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combined Gang- Plow and Cultivator; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making a part of this specification.

My invention consists in the peculiar construction and arrangement of the forward straddling-bar carrying the cultivator-standards, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.

To enable others skilled to fully understand the construction and operation of my improved gang-plow and cultivator, I will proceed to describe the same, referring by letters to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is a top view of my gang-plow and cultivator, and Fig. 2 a side elevation with one wheel removed, to give a clearer view.

Similar letters indicate like parts in the several views.

A represents the carrying-frame, composed of ordinary wagon-hounds, provided with a suitable tongue, B. Upon the wagon-hounds or frame A, at the forward end and on the under side, is secured a cross-bar, G, on the top and in the center of which is a double journal-box, D, which has a socket in its center to receive the end of the tongue, which may be secured by a suitable bolt. E are two pulley-shafts, mounted at one end in boxes F on the frame, and at the other in the double box D. These shafts are provided with pulleys G G, and with hand-levers H H. I are braces or hangers, depending from the frame A to the rear of the cross-bar O, and between it and the axle K these hangers are braced by suitable stays L, and within and between the lower ends of the hangers is pivoted a cross-bar, M, bent upward in the middle to permit it to pass over the row of corn being cultivated, and its top reaching sufficiently near the driver to be readily operated by his feet; to this bar M are pivoted adjustably two cultivator-shares, N, extending upwardly, and their ends pivoted together by a crossbeam, 0. The lower ends of the shares are attached to chains to a to the cross-piece O, to hold them in the ground, and the driver, by his feet resting upon the beam 0, may readily throw them in and out of operation, and through their pivotal connection with the cross-bars O and M may shift them to the right or left at will. To the rear of the axle, and on the under side of the frame, is journaled another cross-bar, P, to which is secured adjustably a plow-share, Q, for breaking and bedding, the lower end of which is fastened by a chain, 1), to the cross-beam to hold it in the ground, and it is also provided with another chain, c, passing up to the pulley G, which, by pulling backward the hand-lever H, coils the chain c and lifts the plow-point from the ground, in which position it is held by passing the end of the lever under a suitable hook, d. At or near the extreme rear end of the frame is similarly journaled another cross-bar, R, to

which are adjustably secured three cultivators, S, the points of which are, like the others, secured by chains 0 to the axle .K, chains f extending from the lower ends up to the pulleys g g g on the shaft P. Another pulley, h, on the same shaft is connected by a chain,

c, to the pulley G, on the shalt E, so that by pulling back the left-hand lever H the chaini is coiled and rotates the drum or pulley h, which, being fixed to the shaft I, causes it and its pulleys g g g to rotate, which in turn, through the chainsf, raises the points S out of the ground. T is the drivers seat, mounted in any suitable manner upon the frame A. The operation of the machine is obvious.

\Vhat I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

The cross-bar M, adapted to straddle the row, and rising up to form a foot-rest, and journaled in the frame IL, in combination with the cultivator-standards N, pivoted at or near their centers to the bar M, and near their upper ends to a cross-bar, 0, whereby they may be lifted or laterally adjusted, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
