Fig. l is a vertical transverse sectional view taken substantially on line sl-AI of Fig. 1.
ln this illustrative form of my invention I have shown a mining machine, generally designated 1, herein of a standard flexibly fed longwall type, having a longitudinally extending frame 2 which is comprised of a motor section 3, a feed section Zl, and a cutting mechanism carrying section 5, the feed and cutter carrying sections being disposed at opposite ends of the motor section 3 and rigidly connected thereto in any suitable manner. The frame section 2 is disposed on its side 6 with its bottom plate Tdisposed in a vertical plane on a skid or support, generally designated 8. of improved form to be hereinafter described. The mining machine 1 is adapted to be fed relative to a flexible feeding member 9, herein in the form of a feed chain, having its outer 'end fixed to a stationary extraneous abutment, not shown, and its inner end suitably guided on the machine by sheaves or rolls 10 journaled on horizontal transversely extending axes on the feed frame section 4. A. feed operating member 11, herein in the form of a chain engaging sprocket, is rotatable on a transversely extending horizontal axis parallel to the axis of the rolls 10 and is adapted to draw in the feed chain 9 at a predetermined slow cutting speed and at a predetermined fast speed, the latter speed being utilized for hauling the machine about the mine surface and relative to a transport truck, not shown. It will herein be observed that the cutter bar 12 is pivoted on a transversely extending horizontal axis 13 parallel to the axis of the feed sprocket 11 and is provided with a cut ter bit carrying cutter chain 14 adapted to be circulated about the outer edge of the bar. The feed chain 9 is adapted to be extended beneath the machine and connected to a twopart pivoted hook 15, indicated by dotted lines in Fig. 1 which is7 in turn, adapted-to engage a laterally extending abutment 15 formed integral with the cutter bar. When the feed chain is connected in such manner it is drawn in by the feed sprocket 11 at a slow orcutting speed, swinging the bar from the upper dotted line position in Fig. 1 downwardly into the coal strata, cutting a narrow vertical kerf and when the bar is disposed in a plane substantially perpendicular to the longitudinal axis of the machine frame 2, it is rigidly locked thereto by means of a locking pin 16 adapted to register with one of` a plurality of horizontally disposed spaced openings'l formed in a circular flange 17 which is adapted to guide the cutter bar during its swinging movement. 1t will herein be noted that the feed sprocket 11 and the cutter chain 14 are adapted to be driven by the motor 3 through suitable power transmission connections, not shown,
