IMPROVEMENT IN PAPER BSOMS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. l 61,403, dated March 30, 1875 application led April 29, 1872.

To all 'whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, EDWARD P. FURLONG, of Biddeford, in the county of York and State of Maine, have invented a new and useful Improved Paper Bosom; and I hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which- Figure l shows a front view 5 Fig. 2 a back view. The dotted lines indicate in Fig. l the back piece, andin Fig. 2 the slit. Fig. 3 shows the center plait attached to the outside ofthe bosom, the dotted lines indicating the slit.

lIhe purpose of my invention is to produce a bosom possessing such iiexibility and such motion or movement of the parts thereof upon themselves, and particularly at the center thereof, that they shall have the appearance of linen articles of the same kind.

This iiexibility I eiiect at the center of the bosom by the use of a center strip or plait, free at one or both its edges from top to bottom, from the other part of the paper shirt front or bosom to which it is applied. By this I mean that I connect or attach this supplemental strip or 'plait at one or both of its ends, and leave it unattached at the intermediate portions, or it may be attached at one side or at the middle, up and down its length. Any convenient manner of attaching the strip to the other portion ofthe shirt front or bosom, so that said strip or plait shall have a free edge or free edges, in order to heighten its similitude to the common linen shirt-front, may be used in my invention.

The center plait is shown at a, and can be applied either on the outside or the inside of the shirt-front-that is, either next the body or over the exterior of the shirt-front. Fig. 3 shows the center plait on the outside, with a slot in the other part of the bosom indicated by dotted lines but it is apparent that when the plait is thus applied the. slot is not requisite, except to give expansibility to the bosom laterally or across the chest. When heavy stock is used the slot is of much importance, as such stock is of course more rigid than lighter material. This plait, when thus applied, (asin Fig. 3,) can be attached by any adhesive substance, and then, when worn, and as the body is turned or bent, the movement ofthe free edge or edges of the plait much increase its resemblance to linen, or to a front made into and a part of a shirt. And here it becomes obvious that the method of this inanufacture could be applied to any customary' material of these articles, as it effects an economy.

Figs. l and 2 more particularly show views of the plait placed behind the other part of the bosom. In such case the slot is of course indispensable. The edges of the other parts of the bosom then overlap the center plait, and, as the body of the wearer is moved or bent, the two edges of the slot in the center of the front or bosom are seen to move and bend over it.

It is evident that making the slot or slits at other parts of the bosom, corresponding in position to the plaits or folds of ordinary linen bosoms or fronts, would produce the saine effect over the whole bosom as Ihave herein described at the center plait.

It is evident that when the front or bosom is cut or slitted it is not necessary to remove any portion of the part thus slitted, either for the sake of iiexibility, or whether the plait or plaits are applied to the outer or inner face.

What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

An imitation shirt-bosom having the slit or slits made therein, and having the plait a secured either to the front or back side thereof, substantially as described.
