RIM MOUNTING.
Application filed February 241 1526.
This invention relates to improvements in rim mountings. and has particular reference to a mounting for use with demountable rims, commonly employed in securing auto mobile tires upon wheels.
The principal object of this invention is to provide means which will securely hold the demountable rim upon the steel felly of the wheel and assist in the proper centering of the rim withouta wedging action of the device.
Another object is to produce a device of this character which Will prevent distortion or bending of the wheel holding bolt.
An additional object is to produce a deviceof this character which may be employed with any form of demountable rim wheel employing bolts, which is now upon the market, without materially altering the construction of the same.
A still further object is to produce a device which is economical to manufacture and one which may, therefore, be readily applied.
Other objects and advantages will be apparent during the course of the following description.
In the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, and in Which like numerals are employed to designate like parts throughout the same,
Figure I is a fragmentary cross section of a steel felly and rim attached thereto, employing my device,
Figure 11 is a side elevation of the bolt engaging cam,
Figure III is a side elevation of the cam and rim engaging member, and
Figure IV is a front elevation of Figure III.
At the present time, it is common to employ merely a bolt extending through the felly over which a locking member is placed, which locking member is tightened against the rim, through the medium of the usual nut. screwed upon the bolt. I have sought to improve this rim engaging means by providing a new form of clamp, wherein the rim will be more perfectly centered upon the wheel.
In the accompanying drawings wherein for the purpose of illustration is shown a preferred embodiment of my invention, the numeral 5 designates the customary steel Serial No. 90,372.
folly of a wheel having a flange 6 against which a portion of the demountable rim l diameter than the flange 6 and, therefore,- clears the inner periphery of the rim 7. This permits the rim to be slipped over the fellv.
At 9 I have shown a bolt having awsquared portion 11 which prevents the bolt fro-m rotating. It is, of course, understood that the squared portion fits in a squared opening formed in the felly. This bolt passes through the felly and is adapted to have screwed thereon a. bolt-engaging cam 12. This cam has a reduced portion 18, which enters the hole in the felly through which the bolt passes.
This serves to center the bolt and, therefore, hold the same steady. The cam surface 14 is adapted to be engaged by the cam surface 16 of the rim-engaging member 17. This rimengaging member has an opening 18 formed therein, which opening passes over the bolt 9 and is provided with a rimengaging surface 19, while upon its opposite side is provided a nose 21 which is adapted to contact the felly.
The result of this construction is that as the nut 22 is tightened upon the bolt 9,'the rim engaging member 17 will engage the rim 7, while the nose will contact the felly. Continued tightening of the nut 22 will cause the member 17 to ride upon thecam surface 14: assisting in, the centering of the rim upon the felly.
This cam member 12 taken with the rim engaging member 17 provides an additional strength to the bolt, thereby relieving the bolt of the bending or weaving action which would be commonly transmitted from the rod to the felly therethrough.
It will thus be seen that I have produced a very simple device which will accomplish all of the objects above set forth.
It is to be understood that the form of my invention herewith shown and described of the invention or the scope of the subjoined claims.
Having thus described my invention, I claim r 1. In combination with a felly having a bolt extending therethrough, a cam member threadedly secured on said bolt and having a portion thereof engaging said felly, a rimengaging member slidably positioned on said bolt, a scam surface formed in said rimengaging member and adapted to engage the cam surface of said cam member, a nose adapted to engage the felly, and a rimcontacting surface formed thereon.
2. In combination with a felly and a rim therefor, a bolt passing through said felly and having a square part fitting a square opening in the felly, a bolt engaging cam threadedly secured to said bolt and having a reduced portion formed on one end for entering a bolt hole in the felly to center said bolt, a cam surface formed on the opposite side, and means received by said bolt and formed with a cam surface to cooperate with the cam surface first mentioned to arrange the rim upon the telly and a nut for said bolt to engage said means.
3. In combination with a folly and a rim, a bolt passing through said felly and having a square part fitting a square opening in the felly, a bolt engaging cam threadediy secured to said bolt and having a reduced portion formed on one side thereof for enter ing a bolt hole in the: felly to center the bolt, a cam surface formed on the opposite side of said bolt engaging cam, a member received by said bolt and having a cam surface cooperating with the cam surface first men tioned to center the rim upon the felly, a rim engaging member on the member first mentioned, and a nose also on said first mentioned member to contact the felly.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature.
FRED V. VVILMOT.
