This invention relates to jars such as are used i'or canning Jfruit and vegetables, and more particularly to a new type of closure 'for such jars.
In my copending applicationsv Serial No. 712,694, h'led May 12, 1921i', and No. 715,078, tiled May 22, 1924, I have disclosed a construction oi jar closure over which the present invention is an improvement'. The inventions disclosed in my copending applications each include a yoke carrying one or two rotatable balls arranged to engage the lid oi the to press the. saine tightly upon the mouth of the jar.

This construction overcomes the above objection, as all ot thepressure is transmitted from the yoke to the lid at points substantially above the joint between the jar mouth and lid, and'such a construction is satisfactory where there is no variation in the size ot' the rotatable balls or in the relative 'thickness ot all parts of the rubber packing,` ring.
lilowever, it is very dii'lieult to obtain balls, .such as are used tor this purpose, of a uni- 'torm size. and experience has proven that the usual jar rubbers'or packing; rings, at present in general use, varyin thickness as much as .020 et an inch throughout their length, that is, a ring may be .020 of an inch thicker upon one side than it is upon the diametrically opposite side. The object or the present improvement is to provide a closure which will assure a perfect air tight seal between the lid and the mouth 'of the jar around the entire joint.

The Yupper end of each of the inclined flanges 3 is preferably tapered, as shown at 6, the lower end terminating in the depending projection 7.
The present jar closure includes the lid 8,
which is preferably molded glass, having the annular flange portion 9 arranged to receive the standard rubber packing ring 10. 'lhe central portion 11 of the lid is adapted to extend into the mouth of the jar to prevent an air space between the contents of the and the lid; and for sealing the ar the usual standard packing ring 10 is stretched around this central portion of the jar, forming a seal between the lid flange and the rim of the A concentric annular groove 13 is formed in the top of the lid S, near the periphery thereof, and for the purpose of reducing the weight of the lid, the under side thereof may be cut away as shown at 14.
As illustrated in Fig, 1, the flange 9 of the lid projects beyond the rim of the jar mouth, permitting the entrance of a knife, or similar tool, between the lid and the ad jacent flange 3, which acts as a fulcrum for the knife in prying the lid from the jar.
For the purpose of clamping the lid on the neck of the jar, aA lil-shaped yoke 15, preferably stamped from a strip of open hearth drawn steel, is provided. This yoke comprises the central channel portion 16, and the depending leg portions 17, which are preferably of greater width at their lower ends and provided with the in elined L-flanges 18, which are preferably concaved as shown, and adapted toengage and operate under the inclined, annular flanges upon the jar neck.
The conca-ved inner edges of the Letlanges 18 will assist in quickly centering the yoke upon the jar neck, and will prevent sidewise displacement of the yoke after it has been positioned upon the jar. Y
In order to strengthen the legs 17 of the yoke, a rib Z1 forn ed in each leg, merging into the central portion of the yoke at its upperend and terminating in the lower curvedend 22, extended beneathy the inclined vflange 1S.
The rocker Q3 may be of cross sectional channel shape, each side flange 24: thereof having its upper or free edge constituting a slight curve as shown at 2V. This rocker is loosely mounted within the channel, body portion of the yoke, the projections Q6 upon the legs of the yoke retaining the rocker against removal but permitting free movement of the rocker within the channel body portion of theyoke, the curved upper edge of the rocker engaging the flat top wall of the yoke.
A half round knob 27 is formed onthe underside ofthe rocker member, near each end thereof, and arranged to be received in the annular groove 13 of the hd, as shown in Fie' l In placing the closure upon the jar, the
standard rubber ring 10 is first stretched over the central portion 11 of the lid, and the lid is then placed over the mouth of the jar, as shown in Fig. 1, the rubber packing ring being located between the annular flange 9 ofthe lid and the rim 4 of the jar mouth. rlhe yoke is then slipped vertically over the neck of the jar, the legs. thereof being received in the cut out portions 29 between the ends of the flanges 3, knobs 27, upon the rocker, being received in the annular groove 13 of the lid.
The yoke is then rotated around the neck of the jar, being turned toward the right, the l..flanges 18 thereof engaging and operating undcr thel inclined lower faces of the annular flanges 3 of the jar. As the yoke is rotated, the knobs 27, upon the rocker, will travel around the annular groove 13 of the lid, preventing rotary movement of the lid with relation to the jar, and permitting the lid to remain stationary upon the jar.
As the L-flanges 18 are moved toward thc lower ends of the annular flanges 3, the lid will be tightly clamped upon the mouth of the jar, compressing the rubber packing ring between the flange of the lid and the rim of the ar, and forming an air tight seal at the joint.
AsA the rocker 23 has the two flanges 24 each having only the single point of contact with the yoke and has a two point contact with the lid, it will be obvious that the rocker will automatically adjust itself, as the yoke is rotated, to compensate for any irregularity in the thickness of the rubber packing ring or in the jar and lid, the pressure being` exerted equally lupon opposite sides of the lid to clamp the same tightly upon the mouth of the jar.

These projections also permit of a considerable .saving in time and labor in assembling the lids upon the jars for shipping, .as the rubber rings maybe placed inside of the jars, and the glass lid clamped directly upon the rim of the jar mouth, the L-flanges 18 of the yoke engaging the under sides of the depending projections T, thus tightly clamping the glass lid upon the jar without the necessity of placing the rubber upon each lid.
The provision of the glass lid, almost entirely exposed to View, permits inspection of the contents of the jar through the same, and the provision of the central shouldered portion 1l upon the lid assists in quickly centering the same upon the mouth of the jar, and prevents the formation ot an air pocket therein.
It is customary for a majority ot housewives in canning fruit and vegetables, to invert each jar after the same is filled and sealed, in order to ascertain Whether there is any leakage around the oint of the lid. Although itis claimed that the present invention provides a jar closure which assures a perfect seal, the yoke is preferably, formed with a tlat top, having an area su'liicient to permit the jar to be inverted and stood upon its top, thus pern'iitting the housewife to adhere to custom in this regard.
I claim:

In combination with a jar having a pair ot inclined, peripheral flanges around its neck portion; a closure including a lid arranged to compress a packing ring upon the mouth of the jar, a U-shaped yoke having L-shaped legs for engagementJ with the inclined, peripheral flanges, and a rocker member provided with tivo langes each having a one-point contact with the yoke and said rocker member having a two-point contact vvith the lid. In combination with a jar having a pair of inclined, peripheral flanges around its neck portion; a closure including a lid arranged to compress a packing ring upon the mouth of the jar, a U-shaped yoke having l.-sha'ped legs 'for engagei'nent with the inclined, peripheral flanges, and a rocker member provided With tWo flanges each having a one-point contact with the yoke and provided With a pair of knobs arranged to engage the lid at diametrically opposite points.
3. `In con'ibination with a jar having a pair ot inclined, peripheral flanges around Vits neck portion, a closure including a lid arranged to compress a packing ring upon the mouth ol' the and having an annular groove 1n its upper tace, a U-shaped yoke having l.-shaped legs for engagement with the inclined, peripheral flanges, and a rocker member provided With tvvo flanges each having a one-point contact with the yoke and provided vvith a pair of knobs arranged to engage the annular groove in the lid.
4. In combination With a jar having a pair of inclined, peripheral langes around its neck portion, a closure including a lid arranged to compress a packing ring upon the mouth of the jar, a U-shaped yoke having l.-shaped legs for engagement with the inclined, peripheral flanges, and provided with a channel shaped body portion, and a rocker member located in the channel body portion of the yoke and provided with a pair oi" knobs arranged to engage the lid at diametrically opposite points.
5. In combination With a jarv having a pair of inclined, peripheral flanges around its neck portion, a closure including a lid arranged to compress a packing ring upon the mouth of the Jar, and having an annular groove in itsA upper tace, a U-shaped yoke having L-shaped legs for engagement With the inclined, peripheral flanges, and provided With a channel shaped body portion, and a rocker member located in the channel body portion of the yoke and provided with a pair of knobs arranged to engage the annular groove in the lid.
6. In combination with a jar having a pair of inclined, peripheral langes around its neck portion; a closure including a lid arranged to compress a packing ring upon the mouth of the jar, a U-shaped yoke having lle-shaped legs for engagement With the inclined, `peripheral flanges, and a rocker member provided with two llanges each having a one-point contact with the yoke and provided with a pair of knobs arranged to engage the lid at diametrically opposite points, and means for preventing side Ways displacement of the yoke.
