When, however, the said retainer 16 is swung in either direction to a substantially horizontal position, it will be manifest that the supplementary door section 15 may be readily raised in the space 1 of post 10 and the spaces 1 3 of posts 3 so as to permit grain to flow through the opening of the skeleton section 18, and this without disturbing the vertical series of door sections 19 which are arranged one above the other and in the same plane as the skeleton section 18, Figure 3. The supplementary door section 15 is provided at its outer side with projections 20, Figure 1. the said projections 20 being provided in order that a crowbar or the like may be conveniently used for the raising of the supplementary door section 15 when it is desired to permit grain to flow out through the opening in the skeleton section 18. It will also be noticed by comparison of Figures 3 and 6 that the skeleton section 18 is provided with a 21 which is designed to receive the lower edge portion of the supplementary door section 15 and hold said door section 15 to the skeleton section 18 and against lateral movement, with a view to contributing to the strength of the lower portion of the door. Each of the door sections 19 is provided with a pendant flange 22 adapted to lap over the upper portion of the next lower door section 19, Figure 3. I would also have it understood that the door sections 19 are removable from the upper ends of the guide ways 4: in the posts 3, and when not in use the said door sections 19 are arranged one above the other in the channels t and 6 of posts 3 and 5, respectively, so as to be entirely out of the way and yet carried in and by the car in such manner that when it is desired to'place the said door sections 19 in position to control the door opening 2, the same may be expeditiously and easily accomplished.
When the parts of my novel grain door are positioned as shown in Figures 1. 2 and 8, and it is desired to bring about the discharge of grain from the car body 1 without disturbing the door sections 19, it is simply necessary for an operative to move the retainer 16 in one direction or the other to a substantially horizontal position, and raise the door section 15 through the medium of a crowbar or other appropriate instrument applied to the projections 20. When thi done the door section 15 will uncover the opening in the skeleton section 18, and the grain may pass through the said opening in section 18.
It will also be readily understood from the foregoing that when it is not desired to use my novel grain door construction, the post 10 may be placed upon the hooks 7, and the other sections of the door may he placed between one post 3 and the post 5 and in the opposed channels thereof, and consequently all of the elements of the grain door structure will be entirely out of the way so far as the door opening 2 is concerned, and yet will be carried in neat fashion in the interior of the car body where they will be adequately protected and yet will not interfere in any appreciable measure with the use of the car body for the carriage of freight other than grain.
It will also be understood from the foregoing that the different parts of my improvement may he formed of wood or metal or some of the parts may be formed of wood and others of metal without ailiect-ing my invention.
Notwithstanding the practical advantages ascribed to my novel door construction, it will. be appreciated that the construction is simple and inexpensive and all of its parts are susceptible of ready manipulation.
1 have entered into a detailed description of the construction and relative arrangement or the parts embraced in the present and preferred embodiment of my invention in order to impart an exact understanding of said embodiment. I do not desire, however, to he understood as limiting myself to the precise construction and relative arrangement of elements as illustrated, my invention being defined by my appended claims within the scope of which changes in structure and in arrangement may be made without departure from my invention.
Having described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters-Patent, is 1-- 1. In a grain door construction and in combination, posts at opposite sides of a door opening and having opposed guides, a supplementary post arranged intermediate of and spaced from the first-named posts and having a reduced lower portion, a swingable retainer connected to the said. reduced lower portion of said intermediate post, a vertically movable supplementary door section arranged below said retainer and in the guides of the first-named posts and movable vertically when the retainer is swung in one direction or the other, a skeleton door section arranged at the inner side of the said supplementary door section, and superposed removable ranged in the guides of the first-named posts and above the skeleton door section.

In a grain door construction, posts at opposite sides of a door opening and having opposed guides, a supplementary post arranged intermediate of and spaced from the first-named posts and having a reduced lower portion, a swingable retainer connected to the said reduced lower portion of said door sections artill intermediate post, a vertically movable supplementary door section arranged below said retainer and in the guides of the first-named posts and movable vertically when the retainer is swung in one direction or the other, a skeleton door section arranged at the inner side of the said supplementary door section, and superposed removable door sectins arranged in the guides of the firstnamed posts and above the skeleton door section, with a substantially horizontal rod disposed above the door opening, a flexible connection between said rod and the intermediate removable post, said flexible connection movable longitudinally on the rod, hooks in the car body and at one side of the door opening to support said intermediate post when idle, and a supplemental post arranged in the car body and spaced from one of the first-named posts and adapted to serve in conjunction with said post in retaining the door sections when the same are not in use.
3. In a grain door and in combination, posts at opposite sides of a door opening, an intermediate post, a skeleton door section arranged and movable in said posts and having an openin a vertically movable door section arranged in said posts and normally closing said opening and movable vertic-ally in a plane, alongside that of the skeleton door section, and movable means carried by one post and adapted in one position to hold the supplementary door section against upward movement and in another position to permit of upward movement of said supplementary section.
