IMPROVEMENT IN PICTUREMOUNTS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No- 161,303, dated March 23, 1875 application filed February 18, 1875.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, JOHN A. VAN DREL- ZEN, of the city of Peoria, in the county of Peoria and State of Illinois, have invented an Improvement in Mounting Pictures; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, in which like letters of reference refer to like parts, and in Which- Figure 1 represents a perspective view; Fig. 2, a cross-section.

This invention relates to that class of pieture'mounts which are composed of paper, card-board, thin metal, or similar light material, as a back or mount for pictures, prints," or similar subjects, as photographs, ferrot-ypes, 830., or specimens of goods, as velvets, cloths, printed goods, &c.

The object of this invention is to afford a protection to the object desired to be mounted, to prevent it from being rumpled or broken, and prevent the edges of the same from cutting the imposed mat, or forcing the latter up by means of its sharp edges, and so defacing the face of the mat. To do this I provide a card (or metal sheet) larger than the object to be mounted, in which I sink a recess of more or less depth, according to requirements, in which said object or picture may lie flush with the upper surface or margin of the card. To and on one side of this margin is gummed or pasted a flexible mat, or a mat with a flexible margin, through the opening in which the picture may be observed, having its under surface, facing the recessed back or card, covered with some adhesive substance, by which the same may be fastened, when re quired, to the card and picture, so inclosing the picture in the recess, but affording it a proper display. I use the countersunk card and mat separate, or not joined to each other but the preferable mode is the attachment to gether.

In the case of display-mounts or picturebackings, where several pictures are desired to be displayed, several countersunk recesses may be made in a card, A, one mat, with corresponding picture-openings, covering the whole.

Inthe drawings, A represents the mount or card, or metal backing 5 a, the countersunk recess; B, the picture or similar object; O, the mat.

What I claim as my invention is- In combination with a mat, 0, having an opening through which the picture is seen, and its under surface covered with an adhesive substance, a backing, A, or mount composed of card or other suitable material, having a countersunk shallow recess, a, to receive a picture or similar object, substantially as and for the purposes described.
