IMPROVEMENT IN BUTTER-WORKERS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 161,276, dated March 23, 1875 application filed November 24, 1874.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, ALBAN H. REID, of Brandywine Manor, Ohester county, Pennsylvania, have invented certain Improvements in Butter-Workers, of which the following is a specification:

My invention relates to that class of butterworking machines, in which the butter is kneaded on a tray by a traversing roller; and the objects of my invention are first to so construct a butter-worker of this class, that the kneader can beworked close up to the end of the tray containing the butter, or can be lifted entirely out of thesame for cleansing purposes; and second, to prevent the escape of butter over the sides of the tray. These objects I attain in the manner which I will now proceed to describe, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a vertical section, and Fig. 2 a perspective view of my improved butterworker.

A is the tray for containing the butter, and one side, a, of this tray is deeper than the other, so that it will be in an inclined position when in use, openings being formed in the lower side for the escape of the fluid expressed from the butter. B is the kneader, consisting of the central cylindrical block b, and radial arms I), the shaft of the kneader having two cog-wheels, cl, one near each end, which gear into racks 6 attached to or forming part of the sides of the tray. These racks extend nearly, but not quite, to the opposite ends of the tray,

so that when the kneader is revolved by means of its handle f it is caused to traverse from one end to the other of the said tray.

the extreme ends of the tray, where the butter is apt to collect, and also because they can be turned up from beneath the rack at each end, in order to allow the kneader and its connections to be removed clear off the tray for purposes of cleansing both the latter and the kneader.

At each end of the said kneader 13,1 arrange a disk or plate, h, which bears against the sides of the tray and prevents any butter, which may be raised by the kneader, from escaping over the sides.

I claim as my invention 1. The retainers D hung to the kneadershaft of a butter-worker, and having concave edges projecting beneath the racks c, all substantially as and for the purpose set forth.

2. The combination, with the kneader B, of disks or plates h, arranged at the ends of the said kneader in respect to the tray A, as and for the purpose described.
