M ATTORNEY Patented Dec. 7, 1926.
UNITED STATES EMIL LECHNEB, OF KANSAS CITY, KANSAS.
TRADE BAND.
Application filed December 7, 1925' Serial No. 73,758.
My invention relates to improvements in trade bands of the type comprising strips of paper formed into rings which encircle articles of trade, such as cigars, packages of chewing gum, etc, and which may bear indicia designating the name and source of the goods, or other matter.
One of the objects of my invention is to provide a trade band of the kind described with novel identifying means at the inner side of the band, and normally hidden from the purchaser of the article or package ca:- rying the band, by which the purchaser after removing the band can obtain from the in terior thereof desired information.
Usually such trade bands are torn from the goods after the purchase thereof, and to prevent the identifying means at the inner side of the band being rendered unintelligihis, the preferred embodiment of my invention provides at the inner side of the band a tab provided with such identifying means, the tab not being liable to mutilation when the band is torn from the goods.
A further object of my invention is to render it difiicult for one to obtain the in formation provided with the identifying means in an unauthorized manner, that is by obtaining it before the purchase of the goods and the removal of the band therefrom. To effect this object, the identifying mark may be applied to the side of the tab which lies next to the band.
A further object of my invention is to provide a band of the kind described, which is cheap, easily applied to the goods, and which will tend to increase the sale of the goods,
The novel features of my invention are hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawing, which illustrates my invention,
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of one form of my invention shown applied to an article of merchandise V Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the band, shown in Fig. 1, as it appears detached from the article, and enlarged.
v Fig. 3 is an enlarged stretch out of the band shown in Fig. 2.
Fig. 4; is an enlarged perspective View of a modified form of my invention.
Similar reference characters designate similar parts in the different views.
Referring to Figs. 1 to 3, 1 designates the body of a ring band comprising a strip of suitable material, such as paper, end portions of the body being fastened together, one inside the other, in any usual manner, as by pasting or gluing, The inner end portion of the body 1 has at its end a longitudinal extension comprising a tab 2, preferably integral with the body, the latter having a transverserow of perforations 8, which so weakens the body at its juncture with the tab 2 that the latter can be easily folded. as
shown in Fig. 1, or detached from the body,
when desired. By having the tab a longitudinal extension folded on a transverse line, the strip may be of equal width throughout, as shown.
Either or both sides of the tab 2 may be provided with identifying marks by which the band may be distinguished from other similar bands. As an exemplification of identifying means that may be employed, the tab 2 has on one side the mark Free, Fig. 2, and on the other side the mark 4, Fig. 3, the tabs of other similar bands may have other numerals and the mark Free may be eliminated, as may be desired.
In the modification shown in Fig. 4, the tab 2 is of triangular shape. the structure otherwise being the same, the identifying numeral in this instance being the numeral 5. The triangular form of the tab 2' .makes itquite diiiicult for unauthorized inspection of the distinguishing mark 5 when the tab is folded and the band is on the goods.
The shape of the tab, and the distinguishing identifying marks may be varied to suit the particular purpose in view.
One manner of use of the invention is to provide that any one purchasing an article having thereon a band on which appears the identifying mark Free may demand from the dealer free another 'article of the same kind.
The numeral marks on different tabs may be compared by two persons purchasing two different articles at the same time, and the one having the tab with the lower number must pay for both articles.
By folding the tab 2, as shown in Fig. 1, the side next the body 1 will be made very difiicult of inspection in an unauthorized way and without purchase of the article carrying the band.
I do not limit my invention to the structures shown and described, as various modifications, within the scope of the appended e1ainis,1nay benmde Without departing from transverse to the length of said strip over the spirit of my invention. the last named end portion, the tab on the hat I claim is side next said last named end portion having A. band of the kind described comprising an id ntifying mark. 6 a strip of paper having; its end portions fns- In testimony whereof I have signed my tened together one inside the other, the inner tune to this specification. end portion having at its end a longitudinal extension comprising a tub folded on a hne EMIL LECHA ER.
