My invention relates to improvements in hat bands, particularly hat bands for ladies hats. Y

An important object -of the invention is to provide a hat band of the above mentioned character, which is adjustable for fitting hats of dierent sizes and which after adjustment, will securely retain itself within the crown, of the hat.

A further object of the invention is to provide a hat band of the above mentioned character which is neat and attractive in appearance, and convenient for use.

Other objects and advantages of the invention will be apparent during the course of the following description.

In the drawings, wherein for the purpose of illustration, is shown a preferred embodiment of my invention, the numeral 10 designates a hat of any well known or preferred type and 11 is the side wall of the crown of the hat. My improved hat band is designated as a whole by the numeral 12, and is inserted within the crown, as shown.

The hat band embodies normally a flat Spring element 13 Vwhich is adapted to be bent into a, curved or circular formation. Secured to the spring element, preferably at equi-distantly` spaced points, are outwardly projecting prongs 111. These prongs are carried by slit-sockets 15, which are adapted li to be slid upon the spring element and then clamped thereto. The prongs are secured to 1926. Serial No. 117,422.

spring element before the fibrous elements of the band are attached lto the spring element. One end of the spring element has no prong attached thereto, and thisend is adapted to be adjusted longitudinally with relation tothe opposite end thereof, carrying the prong.

The band proper comprises an outer tubular casing 16, formed of a strip of fabric which is irst placed upon the outer side of the fiat spring element, and the prongs 14 project through this strip of fabric. This strip of fabric is then folded longitudinally about the edges of the spring element, and this provides inner flat parallel contacting extensions 17, which are stitched together at 18.

The numeral 19 designates a pad portion, which is formed of a suitable fabric such as velvet, plush, or the like. The pad element is formed of a long strip of this fabric, the edges of which are bent inwardly, as indicated at 20, and 21. The pad element is generally U-shaped in cross section, and the folds in its sides, being of two or more ply, impart to the pad the desiredY stiffness. The pad element being U-shaped in cross section, it is adapted to receive therein the fiat eX- tensions 17, and the sides of the pad element and theextensions 17 are all stitched together by a transverse stitching 22. In this element, but provides means for slidably receiving the free end 33 of the spring element, which is adapted to be inserted within the tubular casing 16, inwardly of the opposite end of the spring element.

In the use of the band, the free end 33 of the spring element is held within the opposite end of the tubular casing 16, and the band is generally circular. The bandl may now be introduced into the crown of the hat and circumferentially adjusted therein t0 fit the same and to cause the prongs 14 to enter the crown. The pad is thereby held securely in place within the crown of the hat.

It is to be understood that the form of my invention, herewith shown and described, is to be *taken as a preferred example of the same, and that various changes in the shape, size and arrangement of parts may be resorted to without departing from the spirit olf my invention, or the scope of the subjoined c aim.

Having thus described niy invention, I claim:-

A hat band comprising a spring element provided with outwardly projecting prongs, a tubular casing for the spring element including a strip of fabric placed upon the outer side of the spring element and folded about the longitudinal edges of the saine for providing inner flat attaching extensions, said attaching extensions being stitched together, and a separate pad element which is generally U-shaped in cross section and formed of a strip of fabric folded longitudinally upon itself to provide the U-shape and having its edges folded upon themselves so that the side walls of the U-shaped element embody a plurality of plies, said U-shaped pad receiving therein the attaching extensions of the tubular casing and the sides of the U-shaped pad eleinent being stitched to said extensions, the prongs carried by the spring element projecting through the outer side of the tubular casing and the free end of the spring element being adapted to be adjustably inserted Within the endof the 25 tubular casing adjacent to the opposite end o'lf said spring element. f
