This invention relates to tools or apparatus for applying coating to. surfaces and .-iii its prefei'red embodiment is an improvement upon the construction disclosed in my Patent No. 1,172,233, dated February-15, 1916, the said tool or apparatusdesirably functioning in accordance with the principles disclosed in said patent. l
The coating, if a liquid, may. be a paint, 1.0 japan, varnish or other suitable coating medium, or it may if desired be a solid in powdered form, and the material or surface to which it is to be applied may be of any character, such, for example, as Wood, metal or other material.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, wherein I have represented two embodiments `of my invention; y

Referring first to that form of my invention shown in Fig. 1, the body of the tool is indicated at 1, the handle portion 2 being filesirably integrally formed with the body portion and having therein a longitudinal passage 3 for the paint or other coating material and a similar passage 4 for the air or other motive agent. The coating material and the motive agent are desirably supplied under pressure from some suitable source in a manner which need not be more particularly described and which may be substantially the same as disclosed in my Patent No. 1,321,014, dated November 4 The air or other motive agent entering the passage 4 is admitted into a valve chamber 5 here shown as extending transversely 'of the handle portion 2 and at an acute angle desirably integral 1922. Serial No. 548,696.
A to the axis thereof. Within said chamber 5 is threaded a bushing 6 having a valve seat 7 against which is adapted to be seated a valve 8 normally held closed by a suitable coil spring 9. The said valve is provided with a stem 10 extending through a packing 11 threaded into a suitable socket or'recess in the end of the bushing. The end of the valve Ystem 10 is threadedfas indicated at 12 to receive thereon the nut 13 and the yoke 14 which as indicated in dotted lines extend on both sides of the handleportion 2 to the .ing arm 16 for the attachment of other i o erating devices for controlling the operation of the tool at a distance. The bushing 6 is' provided with a transverse passage 18, which when the-valve 8 is opened admits the air or other motive agent into a chamber 19 which is in communication with a second chamber 20 forming a continuation thereof as clearly shown in Fig. 1.
Desirab-ly I provide means to heat the motive agent in its passage to the point of discharge. While any suitable means may be provide for this purposefI have herein represented an electrical resistance coil 21 which is seated in the chamber 19 and desirably closely fits the internal spiral flange` 22, by which the entering air or other motive agent is compelled to circulate about the coil on its way to the chamber 20. The said resistance coil is provided with two terminals 23. 24, which extend to a suitable pliigor bushing 25. The coil and bushing are held in place by a cap 26 threaded at 27 into -the end wall of the chamber 19. p y The body 1 is rovided with aa part 28 therewith and transversely extending with respect to the handle portion 1. The said part 28 is herein shown as provided with i a longitudinally extending passage. 29, here shown as of two diameters trollcd means for opening and receiving a correspondingly shaped valve member 30. Said valve member is received in the chamber 29 with sufficient looseness to admit the passage of the air or other motive agent about the frame and into va transversely extending through passage 31, itself communicating about midlength with the axial passage 32 that itself communicates with the open air at its forward or left hand end viewing Fig. 1, thereby permitting at the proper time the discharge ot' ci the air or other motive agent against the ilm like coating material in a manner fully disclosed in my said prior patent and not herein necessary more fully to refer to.
l Near its forward end the valve member 3() passes through and is supported by a plug or bushing 33, which is externally threaded as indicated at 34 into the part 28 ci the body, where the tissage 29 is of maximum diameter.. Desirably in vhe rear of the bushing 33 are provided a series of disk like washers or packing members 35.
rlhe part 28 is also provided with a. longitudinally extending passage 36 which at its forward end is in communication with the space 37 within the inner cap 33 shown as internally threaded at 39 onto the externally threaded part 28. I provide desirably motive agent conand controlling the closing of the said valve member 30. For this purpose I have herein represented a flexible diaphragm 47 of any suitable material and which is held in place by a caplike member 48 `having anexterna-l thread 49 received in the internally threaded flanged rear end of the-part 28. The outer portion ot' the diaphragm 47 being held immovable 41 shown as diierentialby the envagement of said cap-like member4 48 throughout its entire perip ery, said diaphragm presents an efficient sealv against eakage of the motive agent, and obviates the use of packing or the like, the present invenved ring 43, thel latter constituting a nely comminuted tion being an improvement in this and other respects over the construction disclosed in my vPatent No. 1,401,397, dated December 27, 1921. Conversely. airwill continue toissue through passages- 31, 32 `for a slight phragm 47 to close the orifice 40, thus iny suring the atomization of the last particle of the coating material. l
In Fig. 3, I have shown a second embodiment of my invention, namely, one wherein the coatng material is carried in a container tecured to and forming a part of the tool or appliance. Otherwise the .structure represented in Fig. l 1s substant1ally the same as that already described and need not be referred to in detail, since the same numerals are employed where the construction is the same or substantially the same.
In that embodiment of my invention shown in Fig. 3, the container for the paint or other coating material is .indica-ted at 66. it having a llanged upper end 61 overlying which is a packing ring 62 and below which is a-ring 63 which may be clamped or held in any suitable way aganst the under side of the flange 61. The cover is indicated at 64 and is desirably integrally form-ed With'the body portion 65 which has a vertical passage 66 into the lower end of which is threaded a pipe 67 extending de`` sfrably nearly to the bottom of the container and through which thepaintl or other coating 1nater1al is supplied to the passage 36, and hence into the space Within the cap 38. The body is provided with an air supply opening 68 into which is threaded a nipple 69 and onto the protruding end of which is threaded the handle member 70 which when threaded into place as described is secured in position by a screw 7l extending through the cover portion 64 and into the raid handle portion 70. The means for heating the air or other motive agent is desii-ably the same as that shown in Fig. 1 'and need not be particularly described and the valve member 30 is also substantially the saine and is controlled by a diaphragm 47 in substantially the same manner and need not be further described.
.The lower portion 72 of the handle receives a pipe 73 by which air or other motive agent is supplied under `pressure to a passage 74 which is in4 communication with a valve chamber 75 receiving a bushing 76 threaded into the handle and having a valve seat 77 for a valve 78 normally held closed by a col spring 79. The stem 80 of said valve extends throughI suitable packing 81 in a socket or recess in the end of the bushing 76 and takes against a trigger-like operating lever 82 pivoted at. 83 upon the under side of the part 70. The bushing 76 is provided with a assage 84 by which the air` when the valve 78 is opened, is admitted into the passage 85 and thence through the space 19 about the heating coil 21.
Preferably I provide means for lplacing the coating` material in the container under pressure of the motive agent. To this end,

The flow of air through said passage 90 is controlled by a valve v91 threaded in a bushing 92 which in turn is externally threaded tor engagement in the body portion 65 of the tool. Also in com-- munication with the transverse passage 9() is 1a vertical passage 93 having a restricted lower end inv which seats a spring-controlled valve 94. Said vertical passage 93 receives an externally threaded sleeve or bu:l hing 95 having an axial passage 96 opening at its lupper end to the-atmosphere and within which the spring 97 of lsad valve 94 is seated. vIn this manner air under presure is admitted from the main chamber 20 through passages 90 and 88 to the container, the amount and pressure of which ad-v mitted air may be controlled or shut oft entirely by means of the valve 91. The spring valve 89 prevents the escape of any particles of coating material through the passage 88. 'lhe valve-controlled passageA 93 opening .to the atmosphere provides `a safety vent to rel'eve against excess pressure of the motive agent, the pressure of the springv 97; upon the vent vvalve-94 being adjustable and preferably regulated to permit said valve to open to relieve against pressure in excersof the maximum desired to be built up in the container or in the main air chamber.;
Having thus described one illustrative embodiment of 4my invention I desire it to be understood that although specific terms are employed they are used in a generic and descriptive sense and not for purposes of limitation, the scope of the invention being set forth in the following claims.
1. 4A tool for applying coating comprising a body having passages for coating material and for air under pressure, a hand valve for. controlling the entrance of air under pressure into the tool, a valve stem having an'axial air passage therein and mounted mg material control valve having a stem a body provided with mounted for reciprocating movement in 'said body, and an air-actuated flexible, springreturned diaphragm adjustably connected -\vith said valve stem and ezposed to air pressure only at the side opposite the said spring and means lixedly yto secure said dla phragm with relation to said body. o
3. In a tool for applying coating having a body provided with passages for coating material and for air under pressure, a coating material control valve having .a stem mounted for reciprocating movement 1n said body, a ilexible diaphragm iizredlg secured in positionwith respect to sa1d ody .and operatively connected with sa1d valve stem and exposed to air pressure u on one side only, and resilient means ten ing tomove said diaphragm against the pressure of the air, said resilient means beingadjustable whereby said diaphragm is adapted for use over a wide range. of operatingair pressure.
4.
