' LIGHTING, FIXTURE.
Application filed May 21, 1925. serial as. 31,756.
This invention relates to lighting fixtures and has more particularly reference to an enclosure for an electric bulb, the main object and feature of the invention being to obviate the necessity of the expensive shades now so generally used and also to admit of unusual and bizarre lighting effects.
In the accompanying drawings the invention is disclosed in several concrete and preferred forms in which:
Fig. 1 is a view in side elevation of a device embodying the invention. I
Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view of the device shown in Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a View similar to Fig. 2 but showing a modification in which an offset shoulder is carried by one of the members of the enclosure for the bulb.
Fig. 1 is a View similar to Figs. 2 and 3 but showing a modification in which the enclosure surrounds the socket as well as the bulb.
Fig. is a view similar to Figs. 2, 3 and 4 but showing a modification in which one of the members of the enclosure is in threaded engagement with the socket.
The enclosure consists of two complementary members 1 and 2 which are cup-shape, the open or free ends 3 and 4 of which members face and are in contact with each other in such a way that the enclosure has the appearance of a single element or presents a substantially uninterrupted outer surface as shown. llhe configuration of the enclosure may of course Vary widely, for instance it may have the appearance of a flame or a flower etc. Inthe form shown in Figs. 1 and 2 the free ends 3 and 4- of the members are in abutting engagement whereas in Fig. 3 one of the members is provided with an offset shoulder 5 on which the other member is seated. Member 1 may be secured to the fixture as shown in Fig. 2 where it is shown as a cup-shape member that surrounds and extends from the base of the bulb 6 toward the free end of said bulb, the member being held between the base of the bulb and socket 7 In Fig. 3 is shown a modified form in which a seating ring 8 is provided on the socket 7 against which said member 1 rests. In Fig. at member 1 is seated between socket 7 and receptacle 9, and in Fig. 5 said member 1 is provided with interior threads 10 that engage exterior threads 11 on the socket. Member 2 is also a cup shape member and surrounds the free end of the bulb and extends toward the base thereof and is held in position on the bulb by means of a spring clip 12 arranged interiorly of said member 2. Spring chp 12 clasps the bulb and holds member 2 in position and also presses members 1 and 2 together.
Itwill be understood from the foregoing that no shades such as parchment or other shadesare needed, because the enclosure may be colored, frosted or otherwise decorated or ornamented and such ornamentation may be either as to surface-or configuration or both. Also, it will be understood, that if it is desired to change the lighting effect, other members difierently decorated or shaped may. be quickly. substituted for members 1 and 2. Furthermore members 1 and 2 may be contrasting as to color or shape and thus bizarre effects may be produced;
I claim:
1. A lighting fixture including: an electric bulb, an enclosure for the bulb consisting of two complementary members, one surrounding and extending from the base of the bulb toward the free end thereof and the other surrounding and extending from the free end of the bulb toward the base thereof, the free ends of the members engaging each other, and a spring clip, carried interiorly of the second member, to
clasp the bulb and thereby support said a second member on the bulb and to press the free ends of'the members together.
2. A lighting fixture including: an electric bulb, an enclosure for the bulb consisting of two complementary cup-shape members the open ends of which come in contact with each other, one member surrounding and extending from the base of the bulb toward the free end thereof and the other member surrounding and extending front the free end of the bulb toward the basethereof, and a spring clip, carried interiorly of the second member to clasp the bulb and thereby support said second member on the bulb and to press the open ends of the members together.
3. A lighting fixture including: an electric bulb, an enclosure for the bulb, presentinga substantially uninterrupted surface,
and consisting of tWo complementary cupshape'members the open ends of Wh1ch face each other, one surroundlng and extending ward the base thereof, the edges or the free ends of the members engaging each other; and a-spring clip, carried interiorly of. the
second member, to claspthe bulb and thereby support said second inemberon'the bulb and to press the meeting edges of the members together.
Signed at'NewzYork in the countyof New York and Stateofllew York this 20 day of May, 1925.
