POCKET FOR POOL TABLES.
Application filed December My invention has reference to pocket irons for pool tables, and aims to increase the simplicity and ease of attachment of such devices. Said devices are usually formed with a pocket leather or shield, the body portion of which hangs down in the outer part of the pocket, and which has an outwardly projected portion supported on the pocket iron, and bent downwardly to form a rim or flange. One of the purposes of the present invention is to secure the body portion of the shield and the flange thereof by the same fastening means. This not only simplilies the number of parts, but it expedites the operation of removing the shield, in case it becomes necessary to replace the same. The shield is also attached to the iron in such a manner that it is unnecessary to secure the shield to the table rail by means of tacks or small nails, as is now the practice.
The above-named, and other features and advantages of the invention will more fully appear from the following specification, reference being had to the accompanying draw inns, in which Fig. 1 is a plan view of the invention, with fragmentary portions of a pool table rail connected therewith.
Fig. 2 is a cross section on the broken line 2-2 of Fig. 1.
The reference numbers 1 indicate portions of the rail of a pool table, to which is attached an arcuate pocket iron 2, by means of pins 3, projected from the ends of the iron. Supported below the iron 2 is a pocket 4, which may be of. any well-known construc tion. 5 is a shield, formed of leather or similar material, the body portion of which projects outwardly beneath an extension 6 ()1 the iron 2. The upper part of the shield is formed into a cappiece 7, the outer edge 01" which is bent downwardly into a flange 8, accommodated by a channel 9 formed in the upper face of the iron 2.
The body portion of the shield 5 is held in place by screws 10, entering similarly threaded openings in the iron 2, depressions 31, 1925. Serial N0. 78,555.
11 being formed in the inner face of the iron to receive the heads of the screws and portions of the shield just beneath the same. The screw openings extend to the channel 9, and the screws are provided with pointed ends whereby it is possible for them to pierce the flange 8 and enter small indentations in the outer face of the channel. By this means both the body of the shield and the flange thereof are held from release. In practice it has been found to be sutficient to use two of the screws 10, one at each end of the iron, leaving the central portion of the shield clear.
It will be evident that if the shield 5 be comes worn from use, and it is desired to replace the same with a new one, all that it is necessary to do is to remove the screws 10, 5 permitting the release of the shield. A new shield can be substituted therefor, and secured in place in the manner hereinbetore described.
It will also be observed that by the construction of the pocket iron and shield herein above described, and the manner of fas tening the shield to the iron, the upper face of the iron has a perfectly plain surface, without obstruction of any kind. That part of the iron 2 just beneath the cap-piece 7 is preferably cut away to the thickness of the shield leather, so that the upper face of the leather will be flush with the outer portion of the iron.
hat I claim. and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is;
A pocket for pool tables, comprising a pocket iron having; a channel in its upper face and recessed in its inner face. a flexible shield provided with a body portion on the inside of said iron and a flanged portion adapted to be held in said channel, and fastening devices pr jected through said body portion of said shield and through said iron, and engaging the flange of said shield to prevent the removal thereof.
In testimony whereof I an i); my signature.
