Application led August 25, 1926.
This invention relates to' golfcups and has for itsprimary object` the provision of a device particularly adapted for use where the golf course has sand greens in lieu of grass greens.
One of the objects of my invention is to provide a sandy green golf cup which is constructed. in such a manner that a constant cleaningof the same is unnecessary.
Heretofore golf cups used on sandy greens readily filled with sand and Vhad to be cleaned each time the green was rolled or dragged. This cleaning often comprised the dipping of the sand from the bottom of a shallow cup and was exceedingly unsatisfactory. In view of this7 my invention contemplates the provision of a comparatively deep cup which is' supported within a hollow casing` which is buried in the ground and anchored in that position so that when the cup is lifted to be cleaned, the casing will remain xed. A yet further object of this invention is the provision of a golf cup of the character mentioned which includes means for drainingY the same, as well as a flag); and ball holder which precludes the rolf ball from dropping clear to the bottom ot the comparatively deep cup when it is dropped in the cup.
The accompanying drawing illustrates the preferred form of the invention and it is desired not to be limited to the specic construction shown therein.
Tn the accompanying drawing:
Figure 1 is a vertical central section of a 'and green lgolf cup made in accordance with my invention;
Fin. 2 is plan view of the same;
Fig. 3 is a cross section of the device talren on line lll-IH of Figure 1,
Fig'. fi is a side elevation of the cup proper showing the same entirely removed from the outer casing; and
Fig. 5 is an enlarged fragmentary vertical section of the upper part of the casing showing the manner in which the inner cup is suspended.
Similar reference characters refer to like parts throughout the several views and the numeral 6 designates a hollow tubular casing having;r out-turned lugs 7 formed at its lowermost end whereby the casing is securely anchored in the ground when it is sunk as shown in Figure 1. The upper end of this casing` 6 has an inturned roll 8 which performs the function of a spacer for the inserm No. 131,420.
ner cup 9 which` is suspendedl within the casing,r 6; Als is illustrated, the casinggGy is comparatively deep, which permits the use of a long or deep cup 9. This cup 9 is formed with an annular llange around its upper edge which rests upon roll 8 when the same is in position. Through this construction a space 12 is formed between the walls of cup 9 and casing" 6 which allo-ws unobstructed removal of the cup when it is desired to dump sand therefrom. Also,
the cup is shorter than the casing, which provides a space between the bottom thereof and the lower edge or bottom of casing 12. In many instances sand will work beneath flange 10 and fall down around cup 9. This space 12 allows the sand to drop clear below the cup and not be suspended between the walls where it will bind the cup and casing together.
Cup 9 is closed by the bottom member 13 which has a drain opening 14e therethrough. Also a series or" drain openings 15 are formed in the side of cup 9 which permits water to flow therefrom even after the cup is partially filled with sand. To catch the golf ball and to hold the flag, a web 16 is secured by rivets or analogous means 17 within cup 9 at a point comparatively near the upper or open end. This web will permit of the sand falling; to the bottom of the cup, yet affords a clean cup whenever the player approachesl the same. It is notable through this con struction a considerable amount of sand may be allowed to accumulate in the lower por tion of cup 9 before it is necessary to pull it from its supportingr casingr 6. Gnly after the sand has filled cup 9 to a level above that of the web 16 will it inconvenience the player in any way. This entire device may be constructed ot `.Q'alvanized sheet metal and the depth of cup 9 varied to suit conditions.
Having thus described my invention what I claim is new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A device of the character described comprising; a casing, a cup member suspended within said casing and a ball supporting means within the cup member.
2. A device of the character described comprising a casing, a cup member suspended within said casing and a ball supporting web within the cup, said casing having means for spacing the wall of said Cup member from the wall of said casing.
3. A device of the character described comprising' a Casing, a Cup member suspendw ed Within seid casing, cooperating' means integral with the casing and cup 'for holding;- the side Walls thereof apart and means for draining Said cup.
1l. A device of Jthe character described Comprising a Casing', a spacing roll around the upper edge of said casing, a cup suspended Within said casing having; an annular flange adapt-ed to rest on Seid roll anda plurality of drain openings in said cup.
A device of the Character described oon'iprising` L easing, a Cup Within said Casing :ind means for holding the Walls of said cup in spaced relation to the Walls of the Casing, said Cup being Shorter than the casing and extending inwardly from one end thereof whereby a space is formed Completely therearound.
In testimony whereof I hereunto affix my signature this 14th day of August, 1926.
