CADZ, OHIO, A GORPORATIQN OF OHIO. Y
'ROLIL Application filed May 21,
The present invention relates to tubes or hollow metal rolls and has .special reference to a roll for use in electric ironing machines, although it is equally applicable to other instances where an accurate inexpensive tube or roll is desired. Great ditliculty has been heretofore experienced in obtaining an inexpensive roll which would have a cylindrical .surta-ce and at the same time be capable of production at a cost which is not pro hibitive, seamless tubing and turned rolls being inaccurate as well as expensive and heavy sheet metal being too hard to be easily termed into a true cylinder. The present invention overcomes these difficulties, and resides in a certain novel construction which is illustrated in the accompanying drawing and will be hereinafter tirst fully described and then more particularly defined in the appended claims.
ln the drawing: n
Figure l is a perspective View ot a tube constructed in accordance with the present Fig. 2 is an enlarged longitudinal section through one end portion of the tube;
Fig. 3 is a transverse section;
Fig. 4 is a longitudinal section showing a 'form diitering in detail from the form shown in the preceding figures.
According to the present invention, a ply or sheet l of thin metal is rolled into a cylindrical form, and then a second ply 2 ot like material is rolled into cylindrical form around the tiret-mentioned ply or sheet with the edges ot each sheet or ply Jforming a butt `ioint and the oints being preferably diametrically opposed, as indicated at 3 and The plies are then lirmly united by spot welding. as indicated at 5, or by seam welding or by the use oit rivets. the heads of `which are arranged Hush with the surfaces ot the plies or laminations. I also provide heads (i, one ot' which is employed at each lend of the roll. and intermediate braces 7 which are ot the saine torm as the heads and are disposed at intern'iediate points in the length ot' the roll. Each head or brace may be stamped from heavy sheet metal or may be a turned casting and comprises a body or disk portion 8 having a central opening or a hub member 9 in which a driving shaft may be inserted and secured in any convenient or preferred 192e. serial No. 110,812.
manner. The edge portion ot the disk is formed into arim or annular flange 10 adapted to lit snugly within the inner cylindrical sheet, ply or lamination of the roll. ritter the tube has been formed by wrapping the sheets or plies l and 2 into' cylindrical "torni, as described and shown, the braces and heads are forced into the tubo and are iirmly secured by spot welding, as indicated at ll, riveting or otherwise. A light and strong roll is thus produced, and it has been found that by employing the laminated cylindrical shell and forcing the circular heads and braces into the same an extremely accurate roll is attained at a cost which will permit the sale of the roll profitably at a low price.
In Fig. et, the outer ply 2 and the head 6 are the same as in Figs, l, 2 and 3. The in` ner ply, l2, however, is not plain but is corrugated, as shown at i3, the corrugations extending circumterentially and a smooth plain portion being lett at each end of the ply to lit between the rim of the head and the end of the outer ply or sli'ell, as shown at 14;.
Having thus described the invention, I claim:
1. A tube for rolls consisting ot' two cotermlnous plies of thin sheet Amaterial each rolled into cylindrical form with its edges meeting to form a joint, the joints being spaced apart eircumt'erentially ot the tube and the two plies of sheet material having their opposed surfaces in contact. L'
2. A roll consisting oi" two plies of thin sheet material each rolled into cylindrical torni with its edges meeting to 'form a joint and the joints spaced circumiferentially ot the roll, the inner ply having circumferentially extending corrugations.
3; A roll consisting ot a shell composed of. two coterminous plies "ot thin sheet material each rolled into cylindrical form with its edges meeting to form a joint and the joints disposed at circumferentially spaced points of the shell, circular disks litted into the ends ot' the inner tube of the shell and having rim members snugly fitting within and supporting the shell. the rim members and overlying portions of the tubes being firmly secured together.
In testimony whereof I attix mv signature.
VILLIAM F. GAMMETER.
