I SPACING AND FASTENIJSiG' DEVICE-.-
Application filed May 9,
This invention relates to spacing and fasteningdevices for metal lath construction, or the like; and its object is to provide a simplified, inexpensive, combined fastening and spacing device for the wire netting thereof. A further object is to provide means for securing the building-paper some times used between the plaster and the sheathing. V
The accompanying sheet of drawings il-. lustrate the invention and in which:
Fig. 1 is a side elevation of the device con structed in accordance with my invention.
Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same de vice after it has been driven in place.
Fig. 8 is a side elevation of the device in a modified shape.
Fig. 4 is a side elevation of the deviceas shown in Fig. 3 after it has been driven in place.
Fig. 5 is a side elevation of a modification of the device.
Fig. 6 is a side elevation of another modification of the device.
Fig. 7 is a side elevation of another modification of the device, showing two spacing members.
Fig. 8 is a perspective view of the device of Fig. 1, showing its position in a sectional piece of sheathing and building-paper.
Like numerals of reference designatelike designates theshank or straight part of the device that is partly driven into the sheath ing or wood, 2 designates the part of the device that acts as spacer, 8 is the upper bent part of the device or the "crotch that hooks over the netting, 4; is the point or toe, 5 is the foot or heel of the spacer part of the device, 6 designates part of the device reduced in size by notches or by being cut fiat so it will bend more readily,7 is part of the netting in the crotch of the device held in place by the spacer part, 8 designates a piece of building-paper heldfirmly against the sheathing 9 by the heel of the spacer art. i li Iy invention as here shown is made of round wire, but square orfiat metalmay be used. i V In usingmy invention, the pointed end of shank 1 is driven through the building-paper 8 into the sheathing 9, the ,point t piercing the building pa'per andthesheath- The numeral 1 1923. Serial No. 637,803.
ing, the heel 5 holding building-paper firmly against the sheathing. The resistance offered by heel 5 causes the reduced or weak ened parts 6 "to bend, thereby causing the spacer 2 to come under the netting 7, holding same securely in crotch 3.
In the device of Fig. 5, the spacing part 2 is turned up and is without a point, and the device is driven in as before, until the net ting 7 is held firmly in crotch 3;
In Fig. 6, the device is not provided with any weakened parts, but depends on the resistance of heel 5 to cause it to bend.
In using the modified device as shown by Fig. 7, the long points 4 are driven into the sheathing, the reduced parts 6 causing the spacer parts 2 to draw together under the netting, holding same firmly in crotch 3.
Having thus described my invention what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1.- A wire spacing and fastening device in the form of a two-pronged staple, having one of said prongs provided with a series of bends adapting the prong to close inwardly and upwardly to engage the wire when the said staple is driven home.
2. A spacing and fastening device comprising, a shank, a spacing member formed integral with said shank and extending downwardly therefrom, oppositely disposed notches formed in said spacing member whereby said member is bent inwardly and upwardly .at its notched points to form gripping means for wire netting when the device is driven home.
3. A spacing and fastening device comprising, a shank, a spacing member formed downwardly therefrom and provided with a toe at the lower end thereof, and notches :formed in said spacing member intermediate thereof and adapted to bend said member integral with said shank and extending downwardly therefrom and ending in a toe,
integral with said shank and extending inwardly when driven home to engage the netting, the toe engaging the sheathing to prevent slippage.
5. In combination, a sheathing, a spacing and fastening device comprising a shank, a spacing member formed integral with said shank and extending downwardly therea from and provided with a toe and heel at the lower end thereof, oppositely disposed notches formed in the spacing member adapted to bend the said member inwardly and upwardly when driven home to form a gripping and spacing means for a wire netting, the toe preventing slippage and the heel determining the spacing.
6. A lath staple comprising a single length of wire having one end formed into a driven element terminating at its upper end into a lateral extension, and its other end bent to form lath spacing means disposed below said extension, and a connection between said lath spacing means and the outer end of said extension said connection having a portion substantially reduced in cross section in the plane of the staple and adapted to operatively bend when said lath spacing means engages the support into which said driven element is operatively projected a proper distance.
In testimony, that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name.
OTTO lV. JOHNSON.
