Application filed March 27, 1923, Serial No. 627,952. Renewed October 4, 1928.
Among the principal objects which the present invent-ion has in view are: To prevent tampering with the lock; to add to the .strength of the structure thereof; and to provide a relatively simple lockingV device for automobile steering wheels.

Description.

The member 10 is cut away 1n its middle section to provide a transverse channel 11, the upper and lower walls 12 of which are preferably parallel or arranged to maintain contact constantly with the periph,- ery of a circular disk 13. The disk 13 is permanently mounted on the squared portion 141 of the pivot shaft 15. rthe shaft 15 has thereduced pivot end 1G for which a bearing is provided in the housing 9 asbest seen in Figures 2 and 1 of the drawings. rihe opposite end of the shaft 15 shaped to provide a socket 17 wherein the extension 18 of the key barrel is inserted. can be best seen in Fig. 2 of the drawings,
the key barrel has a key-way 19. The tumblers 2G ofthe lock are arranged and OPQI- is a transverse section, the sec-V ated in the manner usual. to locks of this description. The lock 21 is mounted in a hollow boss 22 which is tapped to receive the threads with which such locks 21 are generally provided.
The housing 9 has a bracket 23 which forms in conjunction with the cap 24 a clamp for holding the lock iirmlyin position on the tiller post 25. It will be understood that though I have shown nofineans for pinning the bracket or collar on the tiller post this may be accomplished in the manner usual to such constructions without varying from the spirit of the present invention.
The bolt member 10 is moved by the disk 13 to and from the positions indicated by full lines and dotted lines in Fig. 3 of the drawings, and in accordance with the movement of the said disk. The path of the disk is indicated in Fig. 3.
From the fact that the disk 13 is circular and that the opposite sides of the periphery thereof is always in contact with the opposite walls 12 of the channel 11, it is obvious that in whatever position the disk 13 is left by the operator7 it offers a full `and complete resistance to the movement of the membe 10, either upward or downward. Y
The upper end of the'bolt 1U isbifurcated to provide a yoke, the horns 27 whereof are designed toengage one of the spokes 28 with which the wheel 29 is provided when the said spoke is moved into position directly in line with the member 10 and the horns 27.
To operate the present invent-ion4 a key is placed in the key-way 19 of the lock 21 when the member 10 is disposed in its raised position as shown in the drawings. When the all key and key barrel connected therewith are rotated,` the disk 13 is gyrated` until it as-A sumes a. position shown by broken lines in Fig. 3 of the drawings. In this position'of the disk 13 the member 1() will be lowered to the position shown bybroken lines in said Figure 3, and the key will be held in the said key-way 19. The horns 27 of the yoke will he lowered out of the path of thespo-kes 28 of the wheel 29. The said wheel and the steering mechanism connected therewith are thereafter free to move. Y
When vnow the operator desires to lock the car against interference, he places the wheel 29 in position where one of the spokes 28 are alined with the member 10 and the horns r`27 thereof. The key s then rotated to place the disk in the position shown by the tull lines in Figures 2 and 3.
By doing this the driver has placed the member l0 in position to hold the steering Wheel 29 'from operation and the disk 13 from movement.
As long as the disk is in the position shown by 'full lines in Figures 2 and 3, it is obvious that no amount of vibration can dislodge the said disk and the member l() supported thereby.
The modiiication shown in Figures 5 to 8 inclusive consists principally in that the bolt member 30 circular in cross section and the housing 3l is also circular forming a hollow box through which the'pivot shaft 15 extends. ln all otherv essentials the lock shown in Figures 5 to 8 are the same in Aprinciple andA function as those disclosed in Figures l to l inclusive.
