Application filed November sfie24. SeriaINo. 748,753;
The object of thisinvention is to -provide means serving as a combined draft? gear .car'rier and center sill tie for use in connection with the coupler mechanism of railway ficars constructions commonly used the carrier plate crosses from side tosideof the a center sill and is bolteddirectly to the bot tom flanges of the center sill members. We refer now to center sills composed of two Channel beams extendin the length of the car it and arranged para leland 'so' spaced apart as to receive a draw-bar'and draft riggingQ In the arrangement of carrier plate referred to, the nuts often work loose and the draft gear carrier sometimes becomes displaced as-a' consequence, thus removing the substantial,'element'of the support of the draft gear and resulting in considerable damage. 1 f
In the present invention the carrier is hooked onto the bottom flanges of the center sill members and fixed thereto in such way that the bolts arelargely relieved of strain, and even "if the nuts should become detached, the other elements of the device serve to resist the displacement of the carrier. a The invention consists of a plate having its ends bent over in the form of hooks to engage the bottom flanges of the center sill, the'plate at one end directly engaging the adjacent sill flange and at its'other end having a 'gib interposed between its book and its adjacent sill flange, the plate being bolted at both ends to said adjacent-flanges, as we will proceed now to explain and finally claim. I i
In the accompanying drawings illustrating the invention, in the several figures of which like parts are similarly desig nated, Figure l is a front elevation showing' the invention applied to an ordinary center sill part only of which is shown. Fig. 2 is a top plan view with the sill members in section and one of the bolts in section. Fig. 3 is a front elevation illustrating,
b5 7 3 is the plate which forms the draft gear Fig.4 is a central cross section of 1 carrier and center sill tie, the same being of suitablemetal and of proper shape to function as herein, explained, and having the longitudinalreinforcement 4 if desired. One end of the plate is turned up above the top level of the plate to rform-athe hook 5 'which is adapted to engage the flange of one-of the'sill .membersyand the other end of the plate is likewise turned up but at'a higher elevation to form the hooked mem- I her 6, the distance between the inner sides.v
of these hooks being greater than the dis 'tancei' between the outside edges. of the flanges" of the sill members, so that the carrier platemay be mounted upon the flanges by applying the larger hook .6 over the adacent flange and then moving the plate: in the direction of the smaller hook 5'and then lifting the smaller hook-into engagement with the flange ofits adjacent sill member, and then reversing the movement so. as to pull the book 5' into intimate engagement with its adjacent flange-" In order "to secure the plate in position, the gib 7 is inter-, posed between the hook'6 and the, flange of its adjacent sill member so as to occupy the space b.etween..-said hook and the top of the flange, and said gibhas its outer edge enlarged, as at 8, by foldingover the metal of the gib, or otherwise thickening it, so as to. fill in the space between thev curve in the hook member 6 and the outer edge of the flange and engage both.
The flanges 2 are provided with bolt holes 9 preferably of circular. formation, and the plate also is provided with circular holes 10,
as. shown at the-left hand sideFigs. 1 and 2 to receive the bolts 11, the heads of which are arranged on the tops of the flanges and the nuts below the carrierplate. The gib, and the plate at the right-hand side are made with non-circular bolt holes 12 to re: f
ceive similar bolts 11. The provision in the flanges 2 of'circular holes serves to" hold the, bolts in place, while the non-circular holes in the plate and gib serve to remove any possibility of shear on the bolts by movement of the plate and gib. e
In assembling the parts, the headsxof the bolts 11 are arranged to present a fiat sur face against the edges of the hooks 5 and 6 so as to preventthe turning of the bolts.
By the construction described, the draft v gear carrier plate is securely held in place,
and in addition it servesto tie together the p larger dimensions,
' side,
center sill'heams in such way and to such Y extent as to prevent them from spreading.
one I flange and the other hooked end of larger dimensions, agib interposed between the larger hooked end'and the flange, and bolts passing through the flange and carrier plate on one side and throughthe gib, flange and carrier plate on the other side, the hooked ends being brought-into engagement .with the sill: flanges by lengthwise movement of the plate and such engagement secured by the gib'and bolts.
2. A combined draft gear carrier and center sill tie, comprising a plate having hooked ends adapted to reach over the bottom flanges of the center-sill members, one of the hooked ends constructed to closely fit one flange and the other hooked end of a gib having an enlarged outer edge and interposed between the larger hooked end and the-flange and engaging both, and bolts passing through the flange and carrier plate on one side and through the gib,flange and carrier plate, on the other 7 the heads otthe bolts fitting square against the edges of the hooked end.
8. A combineddraft gear carrierand center sill tie, comprising a plate having hooked ends adapted to reach 7 over the bottom members, one oI the hooked ends constructed to closely fit I hooks,
flanges of the center sill members, one of the hooked ends constructed to closely fit one flange and the other hooked end of larger dimensions to permit the plate to be moved terposed between the larger hooked end and the flange, and bolts passing through the flange and carrier plate on one side and through the gib, flange and carrier plate on the other side, one of the elements described over the bottomflanges of a center sill by lengthwise movementor gib interposed between one of said hooks the adjacent sill flange.
A rierandcenter sill tie, comprising a plate having the plate, and a its opposite ends. provlded with one ofsaid hooks of proper d1menand 'lengthwise'to secure the engagement of its -hooked ends Wltllthe sill flanges, a gib intwo piece combined draft Vge aricarsions to embrace a sill flange and the other hook of larger dimensions, and a adapt ed to be interposedbetween said larger hook and the sill flange adjacent thereto to effect engagement-of said larger hook'and said adjacent flange and draw the smaller hook into intimate engagement with its adjacent "sill flange by lengthwise movement of the late. r In testimony whereofwe have hereunto set our hands this 4; day of November A.
